Porsche's new twin-turbo V8 will power Audis

Porsche unveiled a new twin-turbo V8 engine at the 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium yesterday. According to a report from Car and Driver, the engine will see use in future V8 applications across the VW Group and could find its way into various Audis, Bentleys, and even the Lamborghini Urus. We expect to see it first in the 2017 Porsche Panamera. The engine makes 549 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque, or 21 hp less than the 4.8-liter twin-turbo V8 in the Panamera Turbo S. Welcome to the brave new world in which Porsche is a more-integrated part of the VW group. While the new engine puts out impressive numbers, it likely means that the Porsche-exclusive 4.8-liter is headed for the history books. Component sharing is nothing new - Porsche already uses other VW Group engines in its lineup - but it means the flat-four and flat-six engines in the 718 Boxster/Cayman and 911 will be the only unique powerplants remaining in the Stuttgart automaker's offerings. According to C/D, the new engine features cylinder deactivation and is optimized for future hybrid applications. It also consumes 30 percent less fuel than its predecessor, and will mate to both an 8-speed automatic and ZF's dual-clutch 8-speed. Along with the next Panamera, Porsche is also likely to use this engine in the Cayenne. A representative of Porsche North America was unable to provide any official information to Autoblog. Watch Porsche's 918 Spyder break a sweat while hot weather testing

With five months left until the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder enters production, Porsche engineers are still putting the hybrid sports coupe through a battery of last-minute tests. To give us new reasons to ogle over the car - as if we needed any more - Porsche has released a short video showing the 918 Spyder undergoing shakedown tests in the hot Nevada desert. And you can't drive through Nevada without visiting Vegas, too, right?
Although there's really nothing new to see in this video, it's still fun to watch as Porsche approaches one million test miles logged on this exciting new high-performance model. One interesting part (at around the 0:37 mark) shows the car taking off under electric power and then transitioning to engine power, which results in a mix of whirs and growls as the 918 Spyder switches from a 127-horsepower electric vehicle to an 887-hp hybrid supercar. Toyota reveals cause of heartbreaking failure at Le Mans

Toyota was set to become only the second Japanese automaker to win the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. But on the last lap, the No. 5 TS 050 car, which was being driven by Kazuki Nakajima, suffered a technical issue that resulted in a sudden loss of power. In a team statement, Toyota Gazoo Racing has revealed that the culprit was a "defect on a connector on the air line between the turbocharger and the intercooler." The defective air line connector, according to the statement, resulted in a loss of control over the turbocharger. The team isn't sure why the connector failed and is continuing to analyze the component to get down to the root cause, the team said in the statement. During the race, the team was able to get the No. 5 car running again by modifying the control settings. The fix, however, came a little too late as the vehicle could not complete the lap under Le Mans' maximum final lap time of six minutes and limped its way to 45th place. While the team is working hard to find the fix – to avoid a similar type of failure in the future – it claims there is no relation to the engine issues that were experienced by the two TS 050 cars at Spa during the World Endurance Championship in May.
