Evo rediscovers true love in the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Wed, Jun 3 2015Evo is on record as loving the Porsche 911 GT3. In fact the only time the GT3 hasn't won its Car of the Year award was when there wasn't a new one to contend for top honors, and in 2009 (when the 997.2 GT3 lost out to the Lotus Evora). By all accounts, then, Evo ought to love the new GT3 RS. Fortunately that's just what the British enthusiast's publication has gotten its hands on for this latest video. After Porsche went a bit softer with the current 911 GT3, the RS has been toughened up to greet the most hardcore of Zuffenhausen's faithful. It was revealed just a few months ago at the Geneva Motor Show, with a 4.0-liter atmospheric boxer-six driving 500 horsepower and 338 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels – exclusively through a dual-clutch transmission. That last bit might be enough to make the snobbiest of purists scoff, but it wasn't enough to keep Chris Harris from loving it. Porsche turns up boost on 911 range with new Turbo and Turbo S
Tue, Dec 1 2015You didn't honestly think Porsche would stop with just a turbocharged Carrera and Carrera S, did you? No, that'd be silly. Of course Stuttgart had to follow up those two smash hits with a new Turbo and Turbo S. Naturally, both cars build on the 370-horsepower Carrera and 420-horsepower C2S. The base Turbo offers 540 horsepower and starts at $160,195, while the Turbo S packs 580 horsepower and demands an extra $28,900. Adding a folding fabric top to either model will drive the cost of entry up by $12,300, regardless of output. For those keeping track at home, that's a 20-horsepower bump for both vehicles over the previous models, while the Turbo's price jumps by $8,100 and the Turbo S will cost an extra $5,400. In terms of actual performance, the Turbo hits 60 in just 2.9 seconds and will carry on to 198 miles per hour, a one-tenth and three-mph improvement over the current car. Going for the Turbo S will only shave a tenth of second off the 60-mph sprint, although you'll pick up an extra seven mph on the top end. That compares favorably to the current car, which takes 2.9 seconds to get to the magic six-oh and stops accelerating at just 197. The stopwatch improvements are only part of the story. Porsche claims the new dynamic boost function will maintain turbo pressure during sudden throttle load changes, like you might experience when pushing the 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged flat-six hard. That means snappier throttle response. As with the current 911 Turbo and Turbo S, Porsche's excellent dual-clutch transmission is the only way to fly. This content is hosted by a third party. Both cars also get Porsche's Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Active Suspension Management as standard, while upgrading to the Turbo S will add Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control and carbon-ceramic brakes. While there's lots of free hardware, we're betting Porsche's options catalog will remain just as robust. As for the design, you can expect the same look shown on the new, turbocharged 911 Carrera, albeit with some Turbo and Turbo S exclusives. 20-inch wheels are standard, with super-wide rubber in the back – Porsche doesn't list tire specs, but the rear hoops are 11.5-inches wide. Recharge Wrap-up: Ford's "snowtonomous" Fusion Hybrid, Porsche eyes battery makers
Fri, Mar 11 2016Bosch and Panasonic are vying to be the battery supplier for Porsche's electric sports car based on the Mission E concept. While Bosch's costs may be higher, its solution would offer simpler logistics. Panasonic is already well established as a battery maker, providing the packs for the Porsche car's rival, Tesla. "We're in the final stage of making a decision," says Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, declining to comment on specific manufacturers. Neither Bosch nor Panasonic provided comment. Read more from Automotive News. Renault will supply a fleet of 150 Renault Zoe EVs for a smart solar charging project in Utrecht, Netherlands. The project involves the installation of 1,000 EV chargers powered by 10,000 photovoltaic panels. The Renault Zoes would be used as part of a carsharing program powered by the solar chargers. Renault and its partners will also implement a vehicle-to-grid system to provide energy during peak demand from the solar chargers and connected EVs. Read more in the press release from Renault. Ford has been testing an autonomous Fusion Hybrid prototype that is capable of driving itself in snowy conditions. Ford uses 3D mapping to scan the drive route. Its LiDAR laser mapping can even detect single falling snowflakes. It collects and processes up to 600 gigabytes of data per hour, comparing its environment to saved maps, a process that helps establish location more precisely than GPS. In addition to the LiDAR systems, the car is also equipped with cameras and radar to help it navigate. Eventually, the car could even be able to clean off its sensors when it detects loss of performance from ice and dirt. Read more in the press release below.
