My beautiful little 2002 Porsche Boxster S recently suffered a catastrophic engine failure. I cannot afford to replace the engine.  NOTE: I do NOT race the car... The engine failed going 20 MPH due to a failed intermediate shifty bearing.  Google 'Porsche engine failure' and learn all about  2001 - 2005 failed Porsche engines. Porsche will not replace the engine because the car is 12 years old, thus past the 10 year cut-off.

I am offering the car for sale 'AS IS' in the hopes someone may be in a better position than I to replace the engine or have another purpose for it such as tracing or electric conversion

O.K. here is the GOOD, the BAD & the UGLY:

The GOOD: I am the second owner. I have owned it, pampered & babied it for over 10 years. It has been garage kept since new and has only 58k miles.  At 50k miles I replaced all 4 shock struts with new Bilstein's (Big $$), installed left & right new genuine Porsche axles & wheel bearings, 4 new Brembo brake rotors, new brake pads (more big $$).

Two months prior to the engine failure I left a window open and it rained allowing the computer under the drivers seat to get wet.  Bert Smith Porsche (St. Petersburg) dried & shampooed the carpet and did a full diagnostic resulting in installation of  a new security system computer (under seat), new OBD computer, new exhaust O2 sensors, new left window riser, new ignition switch & new cam timing sensor. The bill was $7500.00 but it drove better than new... until the engine failed!

To my knowledge the car has never been involved in an accident. It drives like a dream - as a Porsche should. The body is straight with no parking dings, etc. Interior is in very good condition. The A/C - climate control is excellent. Lots of Porsche Tequipment dark burl maple wood & leather trim (more big $$). See pix. This car has dealer take-off Carrera 19" alloy wheels with NEW genuine Porsche color crest center caps and Bridgestone Potenza tires in excellent condition with minimal wear (lots of big $$). I'll update this post with the tire sizes shortly.  It has a B & M Short Throw Shifter (More big $$) installed and shifts waaaay better than the standard shifter. Genuine Porsche Litronic headlights (dealer installed (do not move with suspension as factory installed units) work excellent (huge $$).  The original ugly orange side markers & tail lights have been replaced with grey 2003 units for a much improved appearance. The engine has a custom exhaust - aftermarket stainless steel exhaust headers, pipes & high performance catalytic converters (the system eliminates 2 of the 4 catalytic converters) the factory S muffler is retained. The factory convertible top with plastic window was replaced two years ago with a Robbins top with heated glass window.  Everything on the car works as it should except the the items listed below (See 'The BAD'). Yes, you guessed it... MEGA bucks spent on this car, only to have the engine self destruct at 58k miles!

The BAD: There are a few paint chips on front & rear bumpers.  I was going to have bumpers repainted.  No need now!  The OEM radio does not work good (works - but the display doesn't light up). I was going to have a Kenwood system installed.  Guess I don't have to now!  The turn signals will not self-cancel after turning. That;s about all the bad stuff i can think of.

The UGLY: Engine is damaged internally requiring rebuild with new cases or new engine.

This is an awesome Porsche, faster & better handling than it was when new - just needs a new engine!

Feel free to ask questions, request additional photos or inspect it (by appointment).  It may be seen in my aircraft hangar on Lakeland Linder Regional Airport. No test drives (HA HA)

Buyer must arrange shipping, trailering, towing, etc. at own expense.

2017 Porsche 911 Turbo First Drive [w/video]

Mon, Feb 8 2016

Remember when turbos were a big fat middle finger to the naturally aspirated status quo? The horsepower renaissance has seen the forced induction phenomenon go from badass add-on (Turbo 'Vette!) to battle cry for efficiency (Kia Optima Turbo). From econoboxes to high-end holdovers like Ferrari and Aston Martin, everybody's doing the turbo shuffle. But what does that mean for the gang from Stuttgart – and more importantly, the top-of-the-line 911 that has called itself Turbo since the mid-1970s? I spent a day in the 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S to find out. Now is a particularly fitting time to evaluate the latest iteration of the venerable Porsche 911 Turbo. Our scrutiny comes at a moment when standard-issue Boxsters, Caymans, and Carreras have finally adopted turbocharged platforms. The Turbo S has a top speed of 205 mph, marking the first time the model has crested the 200-mph barrier. Spoiler alert: Rather than radically transforming its long-evolved essence, the 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo has made incremental changes that makes it, well, more Turbo than ever. Horsepower for the Turbo and Turbo S climbs 20 each, to 540 and 580, respectively; 0-60 times drop to a scant 2.9 and 2.8 seconds, and these top dogs now have terminal velocities of 198 and 205 miles per hour, marking the first time the model has crested the 200-mph barrier. The forced-induction flagships have different engine hardware, another first for the lineup, with the S gaining larger turbo impellers and housings. A revised differential enhances the precision of power transfer, while the PDK dual-clutch transmission (the only gearbox available) gains a centrifugal pendulum for smoothness. The dynamic engine mounts now work harder for crisper response, and the variable damping rates have been extended at both ends for a wider range of settings. If you're a fan of hanging the tail out, you'll be pleased to know that a new Sport mode enables greater yaw angles. And if you dig indiscreet bursts of acceleration, there's now a Dynamic Boost function that preps the drivetrain for a little extra oomph by dropping down a gear and holding the throttle open to maintain turbo pressure, increasing torque from 487 to 523 pound-feet, and from 516 to 553 lb-ft in the S. Standard equipment now includes a Sport Chrono Package, camera-equipped parking sensor, and the Porsche Dynamic Light System. Engine flexibility is outstanding, allowing peak torque to start at only 2,250 rpm.

Porsche, Jaguar continue dominance in 2015 JD Power APEAL study

Wed, Jul 22 2015

The top of JD Power's 2015 APEAL Study has not changed much in the last year. Porsche remains No. 1 with Jaguar nipping at its heels, although both premium brands saw their overall score fall compared to 2014. For those that need a refresher, the APEAL Study looks at how "gratifying" a vehicle is to own and drive, rating cars and brands on a 1,000-point scale. The industry average for 2015 has increased from 794 to 798, while the total number of automakers that finished above the curve increased from 16 to 20. While Porsche and Jaguar finished at the top, their scores dropped eight and seven points, respectively, to 874 and 855. The top "non-premium" brand was Mini, which scored an impressive 825, up from 795. If the BMW-owned British marque is still a bit too premium for your tastes, last year's non-premium winner, Hyundai, did climb five points and is this year's runner up. At the opposite end of the scale, Smart sits at the very bottom of the rankings, with a score of 683 (it didn't appear on the 2014 rankings). Fiat also dropped, from fourth worst in 2014 to second worst in 2015, despite the 500 being named most appealing city car. Subaru made an impressive climb, from third worst to seventh, falling just 10 points shy of the industry average and two points south of the non-premium average. In the individual vehicle segments, eight brands earned multiple awards, with Ford, Chevrolet, and Porsche earning three apiece. Surprise segment victories included the new Ford Expedition, which beat out Chevy's popular Suburban. The Infiniti QX80 bested the likes of the Cadillac Escalade and Range Rover for best large luxury SUV, and the Dodge Challenger beat its muscle car rivals from Ford and Chevy. Most of the victories, though, were quite predictable. The Mazda6 and CX-5 took wins for the midsize sedan and compact SUV categories respectively, while the Volkswagen Golf captured the compact car win. The Ford F-150 won the large pickup category, while the Porsche Cayman was named most appealing compact premium sporty car. Check out the official release on the 2015 APEAL Study, available below, from JD Power. 2015 U.S. APEAL Study Results The latest safety-related technologies are among the drivers of customer satisfaction with new vehicles, according to the J.D. SoCal car culture bids farewell to an LA motoring landmark

Thu, Apr 28 2016

It had a good run, but after 84 years, LA's iconic 6th Street Bridge is being torn down and replaced with a new structure. Magnus Walker gathered members of Southern California's legendary car culture to say goodbye. The East 6th Street bridge is just one of the hundred-plus spans that cross the Los Angeles River, built during the boom era of the 1930s, but it's among the most iconic. It spans the river and the rail yards from the industrial area to the West Side that's rapidly gentrifying as LA's Arts District. Unfortunately the concrete that was laid down way back in the 1932 is far beyond repair at this point. So after years of patchwork and tentative maintenance, the local authorities are taking it down and replacing it with a new bridge in a process that's expected to take four years. The destruction of the landmark is sad news for the people who have come to embrace it as one of the city's most memorable structures – people like Magnus Walker. The so-called Urban Outlaw, known as much for his offbeat style as he is for customizing Porsches, put out word to the tuner community that it was time to say goodbye to their beloved bridge, and out they came, looking like something straight out of a Fast & Furious movie. See how it all came together in this latest video from eGarage. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
