1985 Porsche 911 rally-style classic to be auctioned for good cause
Tue, Apr 5 2016Porsches are supposed to inhabit race tracks, winding roads, and wide, flashy boulevards, right? Not all of them. Take this 1985 911 Carrera, which was has been converted into a rally-style toy that we'd love to sample on a dusty, tree-lined section of dirt. Nicknamed #Luftauto, this lovely 911 is being auctioned off by RM Sothebys during Luftgekuhlt, an event dedicated to air-cooled Porsches and put together in part by Porsche racer Patrick Long. The car has been extensively modified, both aesthetically and in terms of outright performance. We're digging the 15-inch Braid wheels, custom rally lights, and an Auto Foreign Services roof rack on the exterior. The cabin gets a custom rollbar, but it's the driver interfaces we're really drooling over – there's an OMP steering wheel and a CNC-milled shift knob made of walnut and maple, while driver and passenger will be kept in their fancy Recaro seats by Schroth Rallye harnesses. The limited tweaks to the numbers-matching, 3.2-liter flat-six – the headers and exhaust have been swapped with SSi units – do wonders for the Porsche's already impressive soundtrack. The engine isn't a new unit, of course, but it's fresh off a major round of service. There are ample suspension mods, too, with a custom-designed KW setup and long-travel dampers. A cool car being put up for auction is exciting enough, but the profits from #Luftauto are going to something even cooler – cancer research. In particular, the money made will be donated to the Autumn Leaves Project, a charity that's dedicated to battling pancreatic cancer. For those not familiar, pancreatic cancer is one of the most despised, merciless forms of cancer around, infamous for its ability to remain undetected until it's far too late to combat. It's a truly hateful disease. You can check out #Luftauto in action in the video up top. It crosses the block on April 10 in Los Angeles. Additional details can be found at the Luftgekuhlt website. Porsche Panamera wagon may appear next year
Wed, Sep 14 2016Following the second-generation Panamera's debut this past summer, it seems Porsche is planning the unveiling of a more practical wagon version next year. Based on previous information, this seems like a strong possibility. Automotive News spoke with anonymous sources at Porsche who said the car will probably be shown at the 2017 Geneva show. This would fall in line with a report that slated the wagon for a 2018 release, which would make sense to reveal the car in 2017. We've also seen a Panamera prototype with a lengthened roof testing at the Nurburgring, indicating that Porsche is working on one that could be close to production-ready. In addition, Porsche's North American CEO confirmed the US will get a Panamera wagon if it reaches production. If it reaches production, the Panamera will be almost without competition in the US. While it would compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, as Automotive News points out, and the Audi RS 6 Avant in Europe, the US really only has one midsize, luxury wagon left on the market it would face-off with. That would be the Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon. The current generation is only available as the E400, but we expect an AMG E63 model to be official soon. While an impressive vehicle in and of itself, the E-Class still has traditional, upright wagon proportions instead of the sleek, raked shape of the possible Panamera wagon. The E400's 329-horsepower twin-turbo V6 is also a perfectly competent engine, but the standard Panamera packs a 440-horsepower V6, and it only gets more powerful as you move up to the hybrid with 462 and the V8 with 550. All are engines that would likely be available on the wagon. UPDATE: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the E-Class wagon was rear wheel drive. It actually comes with all wheel drive standard. The text has been altered for accuracy. Related Video:
Editors' Choice: Top Five 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show Debuts
Thu, Sep 17 2015Consider the 2015-16 auto show season officially kicked off. The Frankfurt Motor Show offered a great look at the newest crop of production cars and conceptual machines, and brought some old favorites back into the spotlight for a closer look. (The Alfa Romeo Giulia, for example, debuted in June, but this was the first time most of us saw it.) Now that the dust has settled and we're all on flights back to the US, our editors cast their votes for their personal favorites from the Frankfurt show. These are the cars we truly loved seeing the most. But unlike other shows, there was no one runaway winner – all of the Top Five received positive praise from our team. We won't spoil the results, though. Scroll down to see what we liked most from this year's Frankfurt expo. 5th Place – MERCEDES-BENZ IAA CONCEPT View 12 Photos MIKE AUSTIN: The clean lines on this concept have me excited for a more elegant beauty to future Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Next to the Concept IAA, the lovely S-Class Coupe looks like an overstyled barge. DAVID GLUCKMAN: Yeah, the extendable rear is neat and all, but I'm more interested in the front-end styling of this one. It looks like the Tron version of a 300SL, in a good way. I'm hopeful it portends the future of Mercedes design. STEVEN EWING: I was super impressed when Mercedes said that, with the rear end extended, this concept has a drag coefficient of just 0.19. That's crazy aerodynamic. I'm not head-over-heels about the styling, but I think the lessons learned from this concept are really important, and will play a huge role in the future of Mercedes' products. 4th Place – ALFA ROMEO GIULIA View 15 Photos SEYTH MIERSMA: I can hardly express how in love with this car I am. The styling feels creative, modern, and evocative, without going over the top. The proposed performance is spectacular. And the Alfa badge speaks to a legacy of romantic motoring. DAVID GLUCKMAN: Pretty Italian car makes big promises and will probably deliver on about three quarters of them. I think that will still be enough for me. JEREMY KORZENIEWSKI: I'm really intrigued by the Giulia. It looks great, sounds awesome, and I'm expecting it to have a load more character than its German rivals. I hope I'm not disappointed. 3rd Place – JAGUAR F-PACE View 15 Photos GREG MIGLIORE: It's the first SUV for Jaguar, and I think they nailed the design, capability, and electronics. It's the right car at the right time.
