First, let me say that this is a strong and beautiful car.  The exterior is as new, with no issues.  Check out the pictures.  It runs like a watch and doesn’t burn or leak a drop of oil.  I have had it for fourteen years and it has been my daily driver.  I would not hesitate to get into it tomorrow and drive it across the country.  And I am a fanatic who keeps the exterior amazingly beautiful for a 23 year old car.  You will find no better example!

The problem occurred when I moved from Chicago and wasn’t aware of the negative affects of the strong south Georgia sun.  The driver seat dried out and cracked as you can see from the pictures.  The passenger seat shows signs of wear but is still in good shape.  One of the rear seats also needs replacement, although the other rear seat is perfect.  The dash is perfect with no signs of wear, shrinking or cracking.  The top portion of the leather steering wheel needs to be re-stitched, but the leather is perfect.  The body has no rust, no dings, bubbling paint or cosmetic issues, and is as new.  The paint is amazing, shiny and looks better than when it came out of the show room.  I still get compliments and head turns on it at the grocery store.  The tires are Sumitomo HTR Z II's and have about 40% tread left.  The wheels are the very expensive upgraded Porshe turbo 18" wheels for this year and are beautiful, with color Porsche crests.

There are some minor electrical problems.  The passenger side tail light assembly is intermittent, comes on sometimes and not other.  The headlights open and work fine but the glass holding the H4 bulbs leaks moisture. They do not need replacement, just to be thoroughly dried out and then re-sealed.  The windshield has a crack on the passenger side and the car does run very rough on cold starts until it warms up, then it purrs like a kitten.  It fires up normally when warm.  My dealer tells me it is a temperature sensor that needs to be replaced.  But there are three sensors on the 928 and, since he doesn't know which it is and I live on SS, I do not want to pay the exhorbitant service charges from this Porsche dealer to track down the problem, so I put up with cold starting the car and waiting a few minutes for it to warm up.

The car has a computer built into the dash that warns you of all faults.  The computer works flawlessly but warns that the rear axle fluid needs to be changed (see pic).  This warning is based on time of service rather than any flaw in the axle fluid.  My dealer told me to ignore it.  The power windows, power sun roof, power trunk opener, 8-way power seats with memory and rear seat A/C work flawlessly.  The driver side power mirror and rear wiper need to be diagnosed as they do not work.

This has been and still is a nice car, and a head turner.  All service records will be included with the sale.  With a little patience, some seat reupholstering and minor electrical work, it will provide many more years of service.  The Carfax report is clear and clean.  I am including the Garmin 4.5" GPS and the original Porsche 2000 page dealer Shop Repair Manual on CD with the car.  I am 71 years old and simply don't have the patience to work on cars anymore.  But my laziness can profit you greatly in this purchase.  I can arrange shipping with a carrier that I trust and have used twice before, with perfect results (at your expense).  This is a “no reserve” auction.  I require a $500 deposit within 3 days of the auction closing and the balance at pickup, all in certified funds.

We get wet with Porsche's Cayman GT4 and 911 GT3 RS

Fri, Nov 13 2015

In case you missed them, we recently published our First Drive impressions on the super-hot 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 and the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Spoiler alert: they're lovely. In order to properly test these new machines, Porsche let senior editor Alex Kierstein loose on Road Atlanta. But rather than a blissful day of warm, dry conditions, this test session proved to be a super gross experience. The track was soaked. But that didn't stop Kierstein from manhandling both coupes with confidence. Credit where credit's due, Alex said the tires on the GT3 RS were absolutely amazing, and proved helpful for getting the most out of the most hardcore 911 in these incredibly damp conditions. Have a look at Kierstein's experience in both cars, in the video above. We can't wait to get these bad boys out on some dry roads.

What's the deal with comedians and their cars?

Mon, May 22 2017

'Round about the time in his life when it should happen for all of us, Jerry Seinfeld's ship came in with a force that almost split the dock. He'd been doing pretty well with his observational style ("There's a cereal now that's just cookies. Have you seen this? Cookies for breakfast. It's called Cookie Crisp. Cookies for breakfast! They oughta just call it 'To Hell With Everything!'"). But he showed no signs of setting the world on fire until he got cast in a show that was either about – depending on the level of comedy geek you ask – the average New Yorker, the very worst people in the world, or nothing. Suddenly Jerry Seinfeld was pretty much the center of the comedy universe. And while his comedy was at once both brilliantly innovative and rooted in the mundane, his next move was a predictable grab at something exotic – he went out and bought his dream car. A rather nice 911, actually. As almost everyone knows, it didn't stop there, and the man put together one of the most enviable collections of iconic Porsches we're likely to see. So what's the connection, if there is one, between cars and comedy? As far as Jerry Seinfeld (the man) is concerned, he's probably not the same guy as the Jerry on Seinfeld (the show) although it's hard to say for sure; his public persona is almost unnervingly well managed. But cars and comedy were the constants in his life then, and, well, just look at what the guy does now; Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is a cultural constant, and we're certainly seeing Seinfeld the man in that one, and cars are obviously still central to his life. And it's been that way with a lot of very, very good comedy guys. Cars seem to round out their lives, to become the yin to their comedy yang. Ernie Kovacs might not have invented visual gags or surreal humor, but he got them both to kill on television in the 1950s, so he's a comedy hero. He died behind the wheel of his beloved Corvair wagon, so he's absolutely some kind of car-guy hero as well. Bill Cosby, the hottest name in comedy for a good long while, had Ferraris, one of two fire-breathing supercharged big-block Cobras (pictured below), and a BMW 2002tii – none of which either contributed to or in any way make up for the profoundly sociopathic creature he turned out to be, but it's still a data point. The Smothers Brothers, who defied the networks and the norms by getting blatantly political before that sort of thing was cool, went sports car racing.

Porsche to introduce new Boxster Spyder, Macan GTS this year

Mon, Mar 16 2015

Dig the new Porsche Cayman GT4 but really wish it came in open-top form? Love the Boxster GTS but wish it had more punch? Well we've got good news for you, friend, as that seems to be precisely what Porsche has in store. Among the new models the Volkswagen Group has lined up for this year will be a new Porsche Boxster Spyder. Although no details were announced along with the name, there are a few elements we can look forward to. The new Boxster Spyder is tipped to be essentially an open-top version of the Cayman GT4, but just how many of the latter's components will make the jump from coupe to convertible remain to be seen. The GT4 packs the 3.8-liter flat six from the 911 Carrera S with 385 horsepower, channeled to the rear wheels through an old-school six-speed manual transmission. It also has carbon-ceramic brakes, revised aero, and a stiffened suspension. The Spyder version of the previous Boxster arrived in 2009 with a modest 14-horsepower boost, a retuned suspension and a good 176 pounds trimmed off its curb weight thanks to the elimination of the motorized soft top, air-con and other components. That's not all Porsche has in store for 2015, though. The German automaker has also confirmed a Macan GTS is in the works that promises to explore the little crossover's performance potential. Projecting just what Porsche will do to Macan to give it the GTS treatment, though, is a little tricky. Sure, the German automaker already offers GTS of the rest of its lineup, but just where that model slots in to each line varies. On the Boxster and Cayman, it slots in between the S and GT4/Spyder. For the 911, it serves as a mid-point between the Carrera S and the GT3. And with the Panamera and Cayenne, the GTS bridges the gap between the S and Turbo models. Considering both the Macan S and Macan Turbo pack twin-turbo V6s, the Macan GTS could serve as a mid-point between the S and Turbo with around 350-360 hp, or (more likely) top the range with upwards of 420 hp. One way or another, though, we can expect upgrades to the suspension, brakes, rolling stock and trim to complete the package. Most of the rest of the announcements made in VW's annual report we either already knew about or are of little interest, but the document also confirms new Lamborghinis on the way, including two new versions of the Aventador (likely to be the new SV coupe we just saw and an SV roadster) and three more of the Huracan as well, including two Spyder versions of the latter.
