This Porsche 911 GT3 sounds awesome at Targa Tasmania
Tue, Apr 19 2016Unleash high-performance vehicles on closed public roads, and you're practically guaranteed to see something great. Watch a 991-generation Porsche 911 GT3 singing on those picturesque highways, and things just get better. The Targa Tasmania challenges drivers and their machines to negotiate tricky stages in a beautiful setting every year, but there's something mesmerizing about watching this video of a GT3 take the victory in the GT2 class in the rally's 2016 running. Just turn up the speakers, sit back, and enjoy Matt Close and Cameron Reeves put on a show. They take the Porsche from small villages through mountain roads and verdant pastures to eventually attain a class victory. It's a beautiful sight and well worth briefly enjoying in this four-minute video, especially for the great sound. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Car companies may need to start curbing model proliferation
Mon, 17 Nov 2014Looking at the current automotive landscape, especially from German makers, you quickly get the impression that less definitely isn't more. BMW alone offers its 3 Series platform in practically every segment possible, including the regular sedan and 4 Series Gran Coupe, which would seem to be direct competitors. Porsche might be the winner, though, with 20 different variants of the 911 listed for sale on its US website. However, some of this model madness might be reaching an end as companies begin cutting back spending or shifting money to other priorities.
According to Yahoo Finance, the offerings from the German automakers are up 25 percent over the past three years to over 200 models in Europe. The peak is expected to come around 2018 at 230 separate vehicles, according to consulting company PwC.
Amazingly, BMW, which is among the poster children for this model explosion, might be changing its tune. "I'm sure there will be points in the future where we look at certain cars and say, 'Maybe we need to think differently now,'" said head of sales Ian Robertson in an interview, according to Yahoo Finance. The statement certainly sounds shocking coming from a company rumored to have 23 front-wheel-drive vehicles all using a single platform on the way.
Porsche 911 GT3 wows the crowds in Geneva
Mon, 04 Mar 2013Porsche has a long and storied history of taking its range-topping 911 sportscar racing, with an enviable record of achievements in tow. The latest machine with which the automaker will take to the track can be seen above: the fifth-generation 2014 911 GT3.
With 475 horsepower strumming through the 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, this is the pinnacle of naturally aspirated performance from Porsche. It can go from 0 to 60 in just 3.3 seconds, hit a top speed of 195 miles per hour and has lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven and a half minutes.
A dual-clutch PDK transmission (no standard manual gearbox will be offered) with shorter gearing than lesser 911 models sends power to the rear wheels. Providing forward motion isn't the only thing those rear wheels will be doing - Porsche says the 2014 911 GT3 is fitted with the manufacturer's first active rear-wheel steering.
