Porsche will sacrifice profit growth to fund EV development

Porsche is so serious about developing electrified vehicles that it's willing to sacrifice big jumps in profits to fund the investment. After a massive upgrade to the Zuffenhausen plant, the company will build the Mission E EV (above) there in 2020. "Therefore it's clear that we can no longer carry out major leaps on results," the CEO Oliver Blume said about the automaker's financial growth, according to Reuters. Porsche will invest 1.1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) through 2020 to make additional electrified vehicles possible. Around 700 million euros ($765 million) will go into the Zuffenhausen factory to build a new paint shop, assembly plant, and upgrade the engine factory to produce electric motors for hybrids and EVs. The expansion will also bring all Cayman and Boxster assembly under one roof. Outside of Zuffenhausen, the money will improve the research and development center in Weissach and update the sales and marketing department in Ludwigsburg. Blume said Porsche has "many new products in the pipeline," according to Reuters, and he wants as many of those as possible available with some level of electrification. In addition to the Mission E, there are rumors the company might build a 911 plug-in hybrid as soon as 2018. While Blume doesn't forecast big jumps in profits, Porsche should still remain financially successful in the coming years. The automaker doesn't report its 2015 earnings until March 11, but Reuters reports the company's global deliveries topped 200,000 vehicles for the first time ever last year, which could push its operating profit well above 2014's 2.72 billion euros ($3 billion at current rates). Motor Trend hits Laguna Seca with Ferrari F12, Chevy Corvette, Porsche 911

According to the crew at Motor Trend, we should think of the video below "as an addendum to Best Driver's Car," a test the magazine put together that elevated the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S above all others in the category of driving joy. It seems the brand-new 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray wasn't able to take part in the magazine's official test, and neither was the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.
And so Motor Trend did the only logical thing: It procured both the 'Vette and Prancing Horse as soon as it could, and put them both on track with the Driver's Car-winning 911. Of course, these cars don't actually compete against each other - the Ferrari offers up 731 horsepower and wears an asking price of $434,144 as tested, which means you could buy four loaded Corvettes for the price of one F12, and still have money left for a garage to store them in - but that's not the point of this particular test.
The point of this test isn't to listen to the beautiful sounds coming from the Porsche's flat-six-cylinder, the Corvette's pushrod V8 or the Ferrari's luscious V12, either, but the video below is worth watching for those three reasons alone. You know what to do.

Bosch and Panasonic are vying to be the battery supplier for Porsche's electric sports car based on the Mission E concept. While Bosch's costs may be higher, its solution would offer simpler logistics. Panasonic is already well established as a battery maker, providing the packs for the Porsche car's rival, Tesla. "We're in the final stage of making a decision," says Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, declining to comment on specific manufacturers. Neither Bosch nor Panasonic provided comment. Read more from Automotive News. Renault will supply a fleet of 150 Renault Zoe EVs for a smart solar charging project in Utrecht, Netherlands. The project involves the installation of 1,000 EV chargers powered by 10,000 photovoltaic panels. The Renault Zoes would be used as part of a carsharing program powered by the solar chargers. Renault and its partners will also implement a vehicle-to-grid system to provide energy during peak demand from the solar chargers and connected EVs. Read more in the press release from Renault. Ford has been testing an autonomous Fusion Hybrid prototype that is capable of driving itself in snowy conditions. Ford uses 3D mapping to scan the drive route. Its LiDAR laser mapping can even detect single falling snowflakes. It collects and processes up to 600 gigabytes of data per hour, comparing its environment to saved maps, a process that helps establish location more precisely than GPS. In addition to the LiDAR systems, the car is also equipped with cameras and radar to help it navigate. Eventually, the car could even be able to clean off its sensors when it detects loss of performance from ice and dirt. Read more in the press release below.
