Porsche 911 R, GT3 variant with manual trans, spotted

Thu, Oct 29 2015

The Porsche 911 GT3 is still a strong enthusiast choice in the 911 range, and the GT3 RS has gone more hardcore. But both versions are PDK-only. The upcoming Porsche 911 R, spied undergoing testing in Germany, is tipped to adopt the naturally aspirated engine from the aforementioned GT3, producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 475-500 horsepower. Only instead of an automated dual-clutch transmission, it'll feature a proper manual. Other changes are expected in the form of skinnier tires to provide less grip but a more approachable limit of adhesion. It may or may not feature a small ducktail spoiler at the back. We wouldn't be surprised to see it ditch the four-wheel steering system, either. Weissach may also give it some retro cues as well, but the question all those purists will be asking is how many Porsche will make. The last 911 R yielded only 22 examples way back in 1967. This time they'll have to make far more, but we wouldn't expect this particular version to be exactly what you might call "ubiquitous." No matter how rare, it'll definitely be the purist's choice. Porsche calls in The Committee for Boxster and Cayman GTS

Thu, 20 Mar 2014

Porsche is set to offer up the very first GTS variants of its more affordable Boxster convertibles and Cayman coupes. This is very good news for enthusiasts. Aside from our original post announcing the hotted up models, though, Porsche hasn't given us much to go on.
And you know what? This video isn't much of help either. It's called The Committee, and we're guessing it's meant to highlight the lengths that Porsche went to in designing what are essentially sportier trim levels for its two most affordable entries. Still, it's a stylized and entertaining video with a few entertaining driving scenes scattered throughout, and it gives just a small glimpse of Porsche's view of the vaunted GTS badge.
Take a look below for the full video.

Xcar considers the Porsche 911 GT3's PDK

Fri, May 29 2015

Porsche ruffled some feathers when it unveiled the latest 911 GT3 a couple of years ago with a dual-clutch transmission instead of an old-school manual. The rationale was (and remains) that the PDK makes the enthusiast's Elfen faster than it would be with a stick. The purists scoffed, but Zuffenhausen held firm – and even did the same with the even more hardcore GT3 RS. In its latest video, the boys at Xcar set out to find out if the GT3 with its fancy automated gearbox is as good as the previous model (or as good as the current model could be) with a manual – and took in some of the track toy's other trickery while they were at it. Check out the video above to find out what conclusion they reached.
