Edgerton, Wisconsin, United States

You are bidding on a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am. This is a numbers-matching car with factory 4 speed. It has the original build sheet as well as PHS documentation. It left the factory with the following options:

-Body side moldings

-W72 400 4 bbl (Pontiac) engine

-Custom, color-keyed seat belts

-Electric rear window defrost

-Soft Ray glass, all

-Door edge guards

-Hood decal

-Additional acoustical insulation

-Lamp group

-Front & rear floor mats

-Right hand visor vanity mirror

-Drip rail moldings

-Delco AM radio with 8 track player

-Tilt steering

-G70x15 white-lettered tires

Here's a quick, walk-around video with the engine running:

http://vid73.photobucket.com/albums/i224/blue71ta/1978%20Trans%20Am/MVI_9953.mp4

The engine appears to have been rebuilt as it is very clean under the valve covers and inside the intake. It has Erson roller rockers and a mild cam that gives it a nice lope at idle. The following parts are all new (or reman. in the case of the carb):

remanufactured carburetor
fuel pump-to-carb line
ported vacuum switch
ACDelco spark plugs
plug wires
oil change with 10W40
oil pressure sending unit / switch
core support bushing kit
battery

The wheels have been balanced and there is good tread on tires. The rearend is the original 3.42 ratio posi with the "PY" code. I'm pretty sure the Borg Warner Super T-10 transmission is original also, but don't see a VIN on it (probably stamped on top of the case), but it is dated correctly for the car.

The body is solid for the most part, but will need some patching in a few areas (bottoms of fenders, driver's front floor & rear quarters). The trunk is in very good condition, the rear body panel is solid & frame rails look solid. Check out the pics and video for more detail.

The tach, clock and temp gauges are not currently working, but all other gauges work. The radio is not working, nor are the lights & signals. These shouldn't be too hard to fix, just haven't had time.

*Car will need to be trailered as the brakes need work and are not safe. Feels like the right front rotor is warped. I have a pair of used rotors off a '79 T/A that I will include with the car.

This is a great start for a restoration. It's a numbers-matching, 4 speed car that runs & drives. You can fix while you restore / drive.

Please ask all questions before bidding and only bid if you plan to complete the transaction.  A $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of auction end, with the balance due on or before the day the car is picked up. Full payment within 5 days of auction end. Car can be picked up after that as long as arrangements have been made. Balance is to be paid in cash or by wire transfer.

How to turn a Pontiac Fiero into a trackday car

Fri, 17 Oct 2014

Imagine hitting the track in a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe that's affordable and has pretty good parts availability. It might sound like a pipe dream, but it's actually quite possible, if you're willing to think a little outside the box. The Pontiac Fiero is out there just waiting for a little work to turn it into a competent racing machine.
Think about it for a second. Of course, we would all like to be snaking through the curves in something exotic, but what happens when you crash or something breaks? The bills are going to mount up quickly. However, if you ball up a Fiero at the track, as long as you're not hurt, then it's not a huge tragedy.
That's basically the story of Steven Snyder in a new video from Drive starring Matt Farah. Snyder wanted to go to the track cheaply and ended up with an awesome little Fiero with a huge wing and a claimed 220 horsepower at the wheels thanks to a V6 from a Chevrolet Lumina. Check out the video to see how this pint-size Pontiac performs.

Hurst Edition Trans Am proves the Screaming Chicken will rise from the ashes

Wed, 31 Oct 2012

It seems the Pontiac Trans Am steadfastly refuses to die. Ever since Chevrolet was granted a retrofied Camaro to compete with the Ford Mustang, Pontiac lovers have lamented the loss of this 1970s icon. And, looking at the Hurst Edition from Trans Am Depot, shown here at the 2012 SEMA Show, may explain what all the fuss is about.
It's not going to appeal to everyone's muscle-car tastes, but there's certainly room for a brash-and-bold black-and-gold Special Edition in many a Trans Am lover's garage. After all, if you want the keys to a custom pony car, you'll certainly get noticed in this one. If this scheme isn't your bag,, you can alternatively order your Hurst Edition in white and gold or silver and black. Oh, and don't forget a color-coordinated Screaming Chicken on the hood.
No matter which way you choose to go, your inner Burt Reynolds will appreciate the Eibach suspension kit, forged wheels with Pirelli PZero tires, functional shaker hood, fender air extractors, rear spoiler and, of course, a Hurst shifter inside. The interior is emblazoned with all manner of special touches, including a Hurst dash plate and T/A stitching on the Katzkin two-tone leather seats.

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
