Overview

This car is a true WS 4 code Trans Am 4 speed.  Buccaneer red with the nose bird decal.  1973 was a transition year for the Trans Am.  It was the last year for the Endura nose bumper and chrome rear bumper.  It was the first year for Buccaneer Red, one of 3 color choices.  It was the first year for the option of the large hood bird decal.  In 1973 only, if you did not select the large hood bird decal you automatically received the nose bird.  In prior years you just received the nose bird.  In 1974 and later you either chose the large hood bird, or received nothing at all.  In 1973, 4550 Trans Am 455's were built with 1420 of them being 4 speeds.  Pretty rare car with the 4 speed, nose bird decal, and original engine.

I have owned the car 4 years and am trimming back my garage of cars.  I barely have time for 2 cars let alone 3.  Reserve is a fair price for a restored car.

Engine/Drivetrain

The original engine has not been apart.  Original carb, intake, exhaust manifolds. New plug wires, battery, belts and hoses, fluids, thermostat and horns. New HEI one wire insert in original distributor, maintaining original look but new performance.  New wiper motor and pump.  Original wiper motor comes with car and can be re-built.  Radiator boiled and cleaned, 180 degree thermostat. 4 speed manual transmission is a Muncie, but is not original to the car.  Hurst competition shifter shifts smoothly.  3.42 posi gears.  Nice Honeycomb wheels with all new center caps.  BR Goodrich 225/70/R15 tires have less than 1000 miles on them. Brakes have been checked and are fine, so it's ready for you to drive home. New sense-track shocks, center link, and front end has been aligned.  Power steering and power disc brakes.

Exhaust and Undercarriage

New stainless 2 1/2 inch exhaust with new correct tips.  New Dynomax transverse SS muffler.  Undercarriage nicely detailed.  New gas tank, straps and sending unit.  NOTE:  Only the Super Duty had 2 separate mufflers located under the back seat of the car.  Otherwise these cars should have the transverse muffler located between the rear axle and the gas tank.  This transverse muffler is dual with an "x pipe" inside the muffler.  Notice the 2 "ins" and 2 "outs" in pictures.

Exterior/Interior/Trunk

Car was painted base coat/clear coat 5 years ago, and I would rate the paint 8.5 out of 10.  New door glass and rear glass, all bezels look great.  New headlight and tail light bezels, new headlights. Trunk in great shape and includes mat, space saver spare tire, and canister.

Interior looks practically new! Newly refinished formula steering wheel, and dash is in near excellent condition.  No cracks, warping, or fading.  New carpet and sound deadner, door sill plates and package shelf.  AM radio and gauges work. Radio antenna is in windshield, correct for 1973.

Summary

The car is a blast to drive, and runs cool.  Very rare car with a reasonable reserve.  And, a rare 4 speed! E-mail me via EBay with questions and contact information to discuss, or for additional information.

'67 Chevy Corvair convertible vs. '86 Pontiac Fiero in cult classic showdown

Fri, 22 Aug 2014

Every few a decades, the folks running General Motors lose their minds briefly try to market a car that public doesn't see coming and often aren't ready for. In the '60s there was the rear-engine, air-cooled Chevrolet Corvair, then the mid-engine Pontiac Fiero in the '80s and the completely bizarre Chevy SSR in the 2000s. What all of these had in common was that they bucked the trend for American models of their era, for better or worse. The latest episode of Generation Gap tasked the hosts with finding two cult classic vehicles to choose between; they came come up with two of these quirky products from The General.
On the classic side, there's a 1967 Chevy Corvair Monza convertible. Being from later in the production run, it wears slightly more aerodynamic styling than the earlier, boxier examples. Hanging out back is an air-cooled, 2.7-liter flat-six pumping out a robust 95 horsepower. In the other corner is the somewhat more modern 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE with a mid-mounted, 2.5-liter "Iron Duke" four-cylinder, an engine nearly ubiquitous in GM cars of the '80s.
Judging by when they were new, the Corvair was far more successful than the Fiero with over 1.8 million sold. Of course, Ralph Nader's book Unsafe at Any Speed kind of poisoned the well, even if the poor safety reputation wasn't entirely deserved. The Fiero on the other hand only lasted for a few model years before shuffling off, but it eventually got its own performance boost with the V6 version and rather attractive GT models. Check them both out in the video and tell us in Comments which you want in your garage.

GM recalling another 1.3-million cars over power steering woes

Mon, 31 Mar 2014

When it rains, it pours. General Motors has announced yet another major recall, covering 1.3 million units in the American market over concerns that the power steering could suddenly fail. As reported by The Detroit News' David Shepardson, GM has now recalled nearly ten times as many cars as it did all of last year.
It's important to note that should this problem arise in these cars, the steering won't fail completely, however, power steering could suddenly stop functioning. Manual steering would still be possible, but as GM says, there's an increased risk of accidents, particularly at lower speeds.
Like the ignition switch recall, this latest problem covers a wide range of vehicles from Chevrolet, Saturn and Pontiac. Normally, we'd give you the full rundown in paragraph form, but the variety of models and model years means a list is just easier. So, have a look, directly from GM's press release:

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
