No reserve auction for a original survivor-like 50,000 mile 3 owner Mayan Red 1979 Pontiac Formula equipped with its original, numbers matching W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch engine, close ratio 4 speed transmission, and WS6 equipped 4 wheel disc brake 3.23 limited slip differential.  This was a loaded customer order car built at the Van Nuys, California and delivered to Feller Pontiac in West Bend, Wisconsin in early 1979 with the Pontiac 400 cubic inch engine, 4 speed transmission, limited slip differential, white letter tires, body side trim molding, air conditioning, the Formula Appearance Package, heavy duty battery, rear window defrost, rally gauges, soft ray tinted glass, T-Tops, lamp group, power door locks, power windows, AM/FM Stereo tilt steering wheel, custom velour trim group, and the WS6 Special Performance Package. From what I understand the WS6/W72 package was a mid-year option introduced on the Formula once Pontiac realized they had enough Pontiac 400 cubic inch engines to exceed the demand needed for the Trans Am.  Since the availability of this package wasn't widely known for the Formula line, only 346 of these cars were built in 1979.  This one was delivered to its new owner in the spring of 1979 and led a pampered life from day one which accounts for its amazing originality down to the space saver spare still in the trunk!.  The only items I know that have been replaced over the years is the original am/fm radio which was replaced  a cheesey Clarion cassette player with a equalizer and the original 3 core radiator which was replaced with a 4 core unit to keep it running cool.  No worries though because I still have the original radio and the original radiator the car was delivered with.  The car was keyed down both sides within the first year and was repainted which is the only thing keeping this car from being a true survivor in my eyes.  The car is still wearing its early 80's repaint and looks really nice for a 33 year old paint job but it does have a few small dings and chips in it like most 50,000 mile cars but it has absolutely no rust.  The only spot on the car that bothers me is a chip on the front edge of hood that was touched up after the bra came loose on trip back from the TA Nationals in the early 2000's.  The original owner(I don't know his name) kept the car until 1986 when he sold it to Jim Brown from Eagle, Wisconsin.  Jim had the car from 1986 to 2006 and put most of the miles on the car in his 20 years of ownership.  I got the car from Jim in July of 2006 and have done virtually nothing to it over the last 7 years besides minor maintenance and taking the kids out for joy rides every now and then.  The original build sheet and window sticker come with the car for documentation and are as close to perfect as any I've ever seen.  I love the car and hate to see it go but I need room for another 71 or 72 TA so I'm letting it go with no reserve.  If you happen to live close to the Des Moines, Iowa area and want to see the car in person of to have somebody come look at tit for you just call(641-660-4019) or email and I'll be glad to let you see it.  I will be out of town when the auction ends but I will have access to my phone and email so ask any questions you like and I will try to answer them best I can.  I'm sure there are several details I've forgot so let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for looking and best of luck, Chad

GM expands ignition switch recall to over 1.3 million cars amid climbing death toll

Tue, 25 Feb 2014

588,000 Saturn Sky, Saturn Ion, Pontiac Solstice and Chevy HHR models join the 778,000 cars already being recalled.
General Motors has announced a massive expansion of a 778,000-unit recall we told you about two weeks ago, doubling not only the total number of cars affected but expanding the recall beyond Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 models previously mentioned. The recall originally centered around ignition switches that could slip out of the "run" position if jostled or if any weight was applied to the key in the cylinder.

Looking back at Oprah's free-car giveaway 10 years later

Oprah kicked off her 19th season in dramatic fashion by giving all 276 members of the studio audience a free car.
Molly Vielweber's Pontiac G6 appears unremarkable at first glance. It wears forest green paint, rolls on five-spoke aluminum wheels, and it has a sizeable scrape in the driver's side door, the scar of a decade's worth of hard use. You wouldn't notice it parked at a big box store or cruising on the highway. Pontiac made hundreds of thousands of G6s in the 2000s, and a lot are still on the road. It's unremarkable in every way except for the front license plate, which reads, "Oprah 6."

GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
