1938 Pontiac Sports Coupe Street Drag Hot Rat Rod Custom Steel Business Chevy on 2040-cars
Akron, Ohio, United States
I have for sale a very special 1938 Pontiac 8 Cylinder Sports Coupe. The Sports Coupe was an expensive and rare model, a step above the Business coupe. As an 8 Cylinder model car it features a longer, more distinctive front end from the factory to accommodate the larger engine. The car benefits from this added length by having a sleeker design as well as allowing for a wide range of engine options. There is enough room to accommodate almost any size engine. With the side curtains off this car "advertises" an engine better than any car I have ever seen. You can also leave them on to keep it a mystery. Looks great both ways. I have owned this car for 23 years. It is an all steel body. 7 years ago the car was rebuilt with an upgraded rear end and compete chassis to its current "pro-street" setup. It only has approximately 1000 miles on the new build. I commissioned a local race car builder for a setup to handle 1000HP. It now has a bulletproof Ford 9in with Richmond gears, Detroit Locker posi, Moser axles, QA1 adjustable coilover suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes, aluminum drive shaft, fuel cell, Weld Prostar alloy wheels and Mickey Thompson Radials(22" wide Steamrollers in the back!). Modern front end was also completely rebuilt when the rear was done; all brand new control arm bushings, ball joints, steering parts, etc... Car looks incredible in person, a true head-turner. Car was never raced, just had fun going to local cruise-ins on the weekends with the family. I have many original extra parts that go with it too. I like the barebones/ratrod/racer look, but I do have all the original bumpers, trim, etc... if you want to dress it back up. Please see the pics for all the extra parts I am including with the car. Car currently has Chevy Small Block 350/350 Automatic drivetrain. I have available for purchase a never started 355 SBC 12:1 Dart Head street/race motor I was going to install in it, but never got around to it. I will make it available to the purchaser of the car should you want to include it as a package deal. I have new short shocks for the car that need installed. They replace the current ones that are 1" too long with a set that are the perfect length for the new setup. Title is clean and clear, ready for new owner. I have all service history in a large folder including the major rebuild and wheels, tires, etc... I can meet at local airports or bus terminal or can help arrange shipping options. Please send me a message if you have any questions or if you wish to schedule an appointment to view the car. Thank you MORE PICS(click on them to enlarge): |

GM recalling 778,000 Cobalts and G5s, six deaths reported
Thu, 13 Feb 2014General Motors has announced that it will be recalling 778,562 compact cars after six people were killed in accidents, partially due to the airbags' failure to deploy. An issue with the ignition switch is causing the airbag issues, as well as causing the engine and other components to shut off without warning. The recall covers the 2005 to 2007 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5. (Note that the Cobalt pictured above is a 2009 model.)
According to a report from Automotive News, a number of factors can cause the ignition to switch out of the run position, including weights on the key ring, rough or bumpy roads or other "jarring" events. Any of these situations could lead to some vehicle components not functioning properly.
There have been five fatal front-impact crashes that took the lives of six people, although as a GM spokesman noted, all five of the crashes happened off road and at high speed. In each of these cases, though, the lack of airbags wasn't the only lethal factor - alcohol and failure to wear a seat belt also played a role. Outside of the fatal accidents, there have been 17 other crashes where airbags didn't deploy. It's unclear if any of these crashes were caused by the engine shutting off.
GM knew about fatal Chevy ignition problem decade before recall
Fri, 21 Feb 2014Well, this is not good for General Motors. Following a report last week that GM was recalling 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 compacts over concerns that the ignition could switch out of the "run" position without warning, USA Today reports that the Detroit-based behemoth knew about the issue, which affected 2005 to 2007 Cobalts (the Cobalt shown above and in the gallery is from 2010) and 2007 Pontiac G5s, all the way back in 2004.
The information comes from a deposition in a civil lawsuit against GM, obtained by USA Today, which claims that a GM engineer experienced the issue while the then-new model was undergoing testing. The issue was "solved" when a technical service bulletin was issued in 2005, informing dealers to install a snap-on key cover on the cars of customers who complained about the issue. According to the Cobalt's program engineering manager, Gary Altman, the cover was an "improvement, it was not a fix to the issue."
The case where the depositions were made was from 2010, and involved Brooke Melton, a 29-year-old pediatric nurse in Georgia who was killed on her birthday. At the time, police claimed she was going too fast on a wet, rural road, although it later came out through the black box that her car's ignition had come out of the "run" position at least three seconds before the accident (the max amount of time a black box records before a wreck), disabling her airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes. According to USA Today, police said Melton was "traveling too fast for the roadway conditions," although it's impossible to know if she'd have been in the wreck, which injured the occupants of another vehicle, had her 2005 Chevy not shut off. GM settled the Melton family's case, although the details remain confidential.
Official USPS Muscle Cars stamps coming to a mailbox near you
Thu, 21 Feb 2013As much as our digital lives have cut down on our trips to the post office, there are still times that sending "snail mail" is necessary. With us car lovers in mind and philately in their hearts, the good folks at the United States Postal Service will introduce a new stamp design called "Muscle Cars" starting on February 22.
Designed by artist Tom Fritz, the new collection of stamps consist of five classic muscle cars: 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, 1967 Shelby GT-500, 1966 Pontiac GTO and 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda. In addition to just the stamps, the USPS is also commemorating the new series with plenty of collectable memorabilia. Previous car-related stamps include 50s Sporty Cars from 2005 and 50s Fins and Chrome from 2008.
