You are bidding on a 100% original, 1970 GTO with 4-spd transmission, hood tack, A/C, and AM Radio with 8-track. PHS documented, matching number car with 400 cubic inch engine.  Original Pepper Green with Sandlewood interior.  Nothing to hide on this restoration candidate.  All components there.  Buy a 40-year old true muscle car with all original components intact and lovingly bring it back to life.  When done you will have the satisfaction of rescuing a dying breed and have a vehicle worth well over $30,000.

Body

Body panels align correctly, doors close perfectly and do not sag.  Looks like at some point in time the quarters were repaired and rear window corners repaired, maybe one repaint, or spot painting.  But pictures do tell a thousand words and after 40 years be prepared for rust and body panel replacement from the doors back.  No getting around needing both full quarter panels, trunk pan, inner and outer rear wheel housing, rear sill between rear window and trunk.  Have lower driver fender patch panel, and other fender could easily be saved, but also could replace.  The great thing is all of this sheet metal is readily available at reasonable prices.

The good points are both doors and underside of doors have escaped the rust demon, the hood is excellent, and the front endura bumper is great.  Grilles, chrome trim, rear bumper all useable.

Additionally, the frame is solid with surface rust present, but no structural issues.

Mechanicals

As noted, the car has not undergone any mechanical restoration and is still a driver.  Engine fires up and idles nicely.  Still pulls strong.  Clutch and transmission move through all gears nicely.  Power steering good.  Turn signals and electricals work.  AM Radio works.  Blower motor works.  A/C compressor belt is not hooked up and believed seized.  Front brakes work well, rear brakes have leaky wheel cylinders.  It appears like suspension is completely original and never worked on (may have original shocks).  In short, plan on going through all suspension, brake, and mechanical systems.

Interior

Much the same story here, need carpet, seat covers, headliner, door panels, etc.  Dash has cracks at corners.  Steering wheel missing one of horn buttons.  This is a rare bench seat model and has seating for six!  Convert to bucket seats, or leave original. All interior components are readily available.

Summary

This car needs the right individual to bring it back to life.  Peppergreen with Sandalwood, 4-spd and A/C will be a fine, good-loooking cruiser.  Remember your bid is a contract.  $500 deposit due within 3 days of auction end, final payment in 7 days.  Car can be driven on trailer and is operable.  It drives around town but would not recommend driving home.

Question of the Day: Most degraded car name?

Fri, May 27 2016

When Ford came up with a not-so-sporty version of the Pinto and slapped Mustang badges on it in 1974, that was a low point for the Mustang name. When Chrysler applied the venerable Town & Country name on perfectly functional but unglamorous minivans, it saddened many of us. But perhaps the biggest demotion for a once-proud model came when, in 1988, General Motors imported a misery-enhancing Daewoo from Korea and called it the Pontiac LeMans. The original Pontiac LeMans was a great-looking midsize car with fairly advanced (for the time) suspension design and engine options including potent V8s and a screaming overhead-cam straight-six. The Daewoo-based Pontiac LeMans was a cramped, shoddy hooptie that served only to ruin the LeMans name forever, while stealing sales from the Suzuki-based Chevrolet Sprint. Sure, using the once-respected Monterey name on the Mercurized Ford Freestar was bad, but Mercury didn't have long to live at that point. I say the downward spiral of the LeMans name was the most agonizing in automotive history. What do you think? Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. This classic Firebird restomod swallowed a Prius

Tue, Apr 19 2016

It takes an unusual eye to look at a 1967 Pontiac Firebird and see the Toyota Prius hidden inside. But that's just the kind of eye that a creative mechanic known online as "Bill the Engineer" has. Bill is updating his old Firebird into a true classic for the 21st century and has documenting the changes over at Priuschat and EcoModder. The TL,DR version of the story: he's replacing the worn-out powertrain with the gas-electric hybrid one from a Prius V, because it turns out the two vehicles have almost exactly the same wheelbase. Bill, who's from Columbus, Ohio and doesn't want his full name used, said in his posts on the conversion project that he's made many memories with this vehicle since buying it back in 1979. Since then, a few moves, a few decades, and some time in storage meant that the car would no longer function as he wanted it to. As he wrote, "when it comes to mice in the vehicles IT IS WAR." His solution is to make new memories and making a greener vehicle, and so we wanted to ask him how things have been going. Bill's been traveling a bit recently, but told AutoblogGreen that he's now figuring out the next steps for this amazing and complicated project. "I always plan things out before I do them," he said. That's the only way something like this can work. ABG: I think we have to start with what gave you the inspiration for this project. Was it simply that you had the two cars and wanted to see them merged into one cool mashup, or was it something else? "One day my wife wondered out loud if the car could be converted into a hybrid... The rest is history." Bill: I have been the owner of my 1967 Firebird convertible since 1979 when I bought it for $750.00. I drove it for years and made many memories. Afterward it was in storage for many years during which time mice at their way into the car and trashed the interior and wiring. I started working on a conventional restoration but always ran into major problems with hidden corrosion, electrical issues and an engine on its last legs. The car was never going to be as nice as I wanted going the conventional route. One day my wife wondered out loud if the car could be converted into a hybrid like our two daily driver Prii. That got me thinking about how it could be done. The rest is history... ABG: It looks like you started in late 2014. Have things gone well since then, or has it been one hassle after another? What has been the biggest setback, and what were the biggest victories?

Junkyard Gem: 1988 Pontiac LeMans Sedan

Tue, Feb 7 2017

During the 1960s, the Pontiac LeMans was a sporty, rear-wheel-drive midsize car, the GTO's cheaper sibling. Through the 1970s and into the middle 1980s, the LeMans became a bit less youthful-looking but remained a traditional rear-wheel-drive Detroit machine with a V8 engine option. Then, starting in the 1988 model year, the LeMans name went onto a South Korean-built version of the misery-inducing, front-wheel-drive Opel Kadett E. These were dark days for the Pontiac marque; here's the proof, photographed at a San Francisco Bay Area self-service wrecking yard last month. This one didn't quite make it to the 100,000-mile mark. These cars were very, very cheap and sold reasonably well, but nearly all of the 1988-1993 LeManses are hatchbacks. I have seen a total of two Daewoo LeMans sedans during the last decade, and this is one of them. Under the hood, 74 raging Opel/Daewoo horsepower. This content is hosted by a third party. In the United States, the ads for the LeMans were all about the hatchback, and all about cheap excitement.
