Up for auction is an automotive icon:  a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula. Most of the '79 Firebirds had a modestly powered 301 or 305 engine. Some had the more robust 350. A few had as a factory option the Olds 403. This is one of those

cars. This is the same drive train as the best Trans Ams ' without the screaming chicken!  The body looks pretty sharp, the paint has a good shine to it. There is a fleck or three missing but is quite presentable. The only rust I can see is a bit of surface rust on the hood near the right hood air scoop. The interior is in very nice condition.  Its what some term a "20 footer". Some idiot put in a temporary dash cap that does not quite match-oh wait, that was me. Sorry. It will need a new decal kit if you want to start going to shows but as a driver its pretty much good to go. The car starts right up every time and did all winter. I've been driving it everyday and it goes down the road at a good clip, draws smiles and turns heads every time I head out the driveway. I suspect it will need new shocks and the tires are old but they are serving well. I don't have a lot of history on this car. I do know it spent some years of its life in a shed in southern Illinois, a fate that I saved it from. The title I got was clear and mileage exempt due to age. My title says what's on the odometer which is 35 K. I cannot swear that's the true mileage so its either 35 or a surprisingly fit 135.  I drive cars but I don"t fix them. There may be other issues not readily apparent-but I have been driving this car on a daily basis to work, to kid's sports games, to grocery store etc and it has never failed to start, stall out or leave me stranded. Feel free to send me an email but I would prefer if you just called with any questions. two-oh-two five five oh-oh oh oh eight-my name is Claude. I suspect that many people reading this listing will know more about cars in general and this car in particular than I do so if you want to call and ask about "compression ratios" or some such its going to be a boring conversation but I will do the best I can. This car according to the NADA guide in average condition is worth close to $13,000.  My reserve is thousands less than that. Please bid with care and only do so with the realization that the successful bidder has entered into a legally binding contract. The winning bidder agrees to send me $750 via Paypal within 24 hours of close of the auction and pay the balance with bank wire, cash or cashier's check within 7 days. If you are local or near local you are invited to see/drive vehicle which is located just outside of Washington, DC. I am happy to keep the car here free of charge for up to 30 days. I will help with loading if you want it shipped. Happy bidding!

700 horsepower Porsche GT2 RS is the wildest 911 ever

Fri, Jun 30 2017

The Porsche 911 comes in a variety of flavors, each filling a certain taste for a certain customer. Sitting atop the range is the new 911 GT2 RS. In previous generations, the GT2 had a bit of a reputation as a widowmaker, a 911 with massive power that could snap and bite with the slightest agitation. Porsche says the new model has been civilized, but with 700 horsepower going to the rear wheels, we're sure it's going to be as mad as ever. Power comes from a highly massaged version of the 3.8-liter flat-six from the 911 Turbo S. The rear-mounted engine makes an outrageous 700 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Like we previously reported, the new car will use water injection to help keep things cool. The only transmission is Porsche's PDK. While enthusiasts may lament the loss of the manual, the RS models have always been about performance above all else. Simply put, the PDK is the better performance option. All that power translates to a 0-60 mph time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph. The engine makes 80 more horsepower than the previous model. That makes it the most powerful road-going 911 ever built. In fact, the 887 horsepower 918 Spyder is the only road-going Porsche that makes more power. The fact that Porsche trusts all of that power to go to the rear is both thrilling and terrifying at the same time. In order to manage traction, the GT2 RS gets a number of upgrades. Rear-wheel steering has become commonplace in the 911 lineup, so it's no surprise to see it here. Sticky tires with 265/35 ZR 20 section rubber at the front and 325/30 ZR 21 section rubber at the rear keep things planted. That comically large rear wing adds downforce, adding to stability. The car gets standard carbon ceramic brakes. While some people prefer traditional rotors for the street, like the PDK, this is all about performance. A number of intakes and outlets complement the rear wing and maximize aerodynamic efficiency. It's a bit of a surprise that with all the focus on downforce, the GT2 RS still manages to top out at 211 mph. The hood, front wings, wheel housing vents, door mirrors, side air intakes, parts of the rear end, and a number of interior components are all made from carbon fiber. The roof has been made of magnesium. If you want to drop any pretense of civility and comfort in the pursuit of speed, Porsche is offering a Weissach package that shaves off another 40 pounds from the already impressive wet weight of 3,241.

Trans Am Depot teases 2014 GTO

Mon, 24 Jun 2013

Here comes the Judge. Court is in session. The verdict is in. How many more tired clichés can we come up with? It hardly seems to matter, because it's happening: Trans Am Depot has announced via the teaser video below that it is launching a 2014 GTO, complete with Carousel Red (bright orange, really) paint and full Judge badging.
The car is based on Trans Am Depot's 6T9 Goat, which, in case you don't get the reverential references, is meant to mimic the look of the 1969 Pontiac GTO. As with the company's other cars -including the 2013 Hurst Edition Trans Am we recently drove - the GTO will be based on the current Chevy Camaro, which means two doors, V8 engines and rear-wheel drive, just like the muscle cars of days past.
As for actual details of what's under the 2014 GTO's hood, we're completely left hanging. We'd expect some sort of power adder (turbo, supercharger or possibly some other form of a highly massaged version of the Camaro's V8), and we certainly know that GM has any number of hi-po crate engines to choose from.

Destiny: General Motors should bring back Pontiac

Wed, Apr 26 2017

Despite having officially left the market in 2010, the Pontiac badge is still a common sight on roadways throughout the United States. Towards the end of its life, Pontiac models were largely rebadged versions of other General Motors vehicles, like the Pontiac G5 and Chevrolet Cobalt. It's sad, but there's no other way to put it; Pontiac was a mere shadow of its former self at the time of its death. Now it's time to revive the legendary brand. General Motors announced it would be reviving the Redline series, a package that originated with Saturn, another dead brand, earlier this year. Some models, like the Chevrolet Camaro will receive unique cosmetic touches designed to make it look even sportier, something Pontiac excelled at in most cases. Gas prices have fallen dramatically in the past few years and consumers have taken notice. Sales of fuel efficient cars, like hybrids and compact sedans, aren't increasing at the same rate as larger, less efficient vehicles, like trucks and SUVs. Muscle cars, like the Ford Mustang, are seeing increasing sales as well. Perhaps it's time to revive Pontiac and restore the marque to its former glory: a brand that brought performance and style at an affordable price. There are currently few manufacturers that offer a true challenge to high-performance automakers like BMW. The German brand continues to see high sales year after year and performance has a lot to do with it. Brand recognition, namely through the BMW badge, plays a major role as well. Pontiac, arguably one of the most well-known brands to ever grace the industry, can match both factors with ease. Pontiac was once revered as a brand that revolutionized the muscle car segment in the 1970s and 1980s. It still has a lively following throughout enthusiast spheres and amongst drivers of all ages to this day. Reviving the brand with a small line of high-performance vehicles would certainly offer a challenge to dominating German brands. A small lineup of affordable vehicles bearing the Pontiac badge and designed for performance and style would certainly make waves in the current market. Reviving a few older nameplates, such as the GTO and Trans Am, would offer nostalgic appeal. Packing both models with a powerful entry-level engine, say the Camaro's turbocharged four-cylinder or V6 engine, would open up the market considerably.
