1968 Pontiac Firebird

350 2bbl Automatic

I am selling my 1968 Pontaic Firebird.  I will try to describe the car in as much detail as possible (even the negative details) so please read carefully.  Because of differences in meaning for people, it's probably best to see the car for yourself first anyway.

This car has a clean MO title.  It is currently licensed and drive-able.

The car runs really well.  It cold starts on its own, even in below freezing temperatures.  It drives well, and shifts well.  The 350 motor & transmission was rebuilt less than 2k miles ago.

The car is matching numbers.  All the interior (except for a couple of speakers that were added in the 80's) is original to the car.  It is currently missing passenger side carpet on the floor.

It has been garage kept for the majority of its recent life, and I took it out for a drive only during appropriate weather.

The paint is original to the car.

A skilled restorer can salvage all of the fenders on this car.

The lights and turn signals all work.  I purchased new turn signals which are also included with the car.

The exterior color is originally Primavera Beige, and the interior is the beautiful 60's Green-Gold color.

I have freshly painted Rally II Wheels with new rims that are being included with the car.

The bumper has been removed and is not currently attached, but that is also included with the car.

The engine has recently been repainted the original Pontiac Blue.

Now, on to the known issues:

The body has some rough patches.  No car is immune to rust, and that includes muscle cars.  The car has some rust in the normal areas that Firebirds and Camaros share.  There is only minor surface rust in the trunk (really minor) and the floors are solid and rust free.  The fender rust did spread to create a small hole in corner of the passenger side floor (see picture and note that the insulation put on the floorboards of cars is also brown.  The rust is localized to the hole and a small surrounding area.).

The front fenders have two minor dents near the headlights.

The gas gauge does not work.

The dash light is out (behind the speedometer, etc)

The A/C does not work.

When the brights are switched on, one of the standard lights stays on.

Overall this car would make a great restoration project or daily driver.  No mechanical work needs to be done to the vehicle.  I would encourage anyone legitimately interested in the car to see it for themselves if possible.  I have tried to explain all of the details of the car to the best of my ability to prevent any time from being wasted.  I would be happy to answer any questions.  Please also note that this vehicle is for sale locally, and therefore this ad can be cancelled at any time.  I feel like my asking price is fair, but I will entertain offers.  Everyone likes to feel like they're getting the best deal possible, so offer away.  I will only accept cash as the method of payment.

Steve McQueen barn find: Movie Trans Am surfaces after almost 40 years

Mon, Dec 17 2018

An important Steve McQueen film car has emerged from barn storage. No, it's not yet another " Bullitt" Mustang, quite the contrary: The car in question is a 1980 Pontiac Trans Am, and it starred in McQueen's final film, " The Hunter." In the movie, McQueen plays a bounty hunter, and while in " Bullitt" he's quite the wheelman, that's not the case in this one. McQueen's character, "Papa" Thorson, is a horrible driver, and the Trans Am is far too much car for him. A chase sequence sees McQueen driving a combine harvester to catch the perps who are driving his stolen rental Pontiac, and the Trans Am ends up blown in half with dynamite, then returned to the airport on a trailer. The driver of said GMC truck and trailer combination, Harold McQueen (no relation), received the title of the first car used in filming, and for the following decades planned to fix the now-ruined car, but never got around to it. Instead, the 1,300-mile Pontiac wreck sat on a farm for nearly 40 years, until Harold decided to sell it to an enthusiast. There's studio documentation proving the car's pedigree, and stunt modifications can be seen in the Pontiac's floor and dash. While it's obviously in dreadful condition, the car remained more intact than the other stunt car the film crew blew up even more spectacularly — that car ended up as the pile of parts in the airport scene, and those bits and pieces were eventually dropped off at a junkyard after a Pontiac dealer refused them. McQueen did also drive a 1951 Chevrolet in the film, and kept that yellow convertible after filming was wrapped up. Sadly, he was diagnosed with cancer just a month later, after reportedly being in poor health during the shooting, and passed away in December 1980. The yellow Chevy stayed with his estate for some years, later getting restored and auctioned. Right now, it's not clear what the Trans Am's fate will be. The car's current owner, Calvin Riggs from Carlyle Motors in Katy, Texas, wants to know more about the Trans Am and the film shoot: His post on Hemmings includes a lot of information, but more would be useful. GM expands ignition switch recall to over 1.3 million cars amid climbing death toll

Tue, 25 Feb 2014

588,000 Saturn Sky, Saturn Ion, Pontiac Solstice and Chevy HHR models join the 778,000 cars already being recalled.
General Motors has announced a massive expansion of a 778,000-unit recall we told you about two weeks ago, doubling not only the total number of cars affected but expanding the recall beyond Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 models previously mentioned. The recall originally centered around ignition switches that could slip out of the "run" position if jostled or if any weight was applied to the key in the cylinder.

GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns

Thu, 15 May 2014

The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.
