1968 Pontiac Firebird 350 5.7l on 2040-cars

This is my dad's 68 firebird the he purchased in California and brought back to Illinois where it now sits in his garage. The car has a California title and it's California blue plates. Believed to be the original Pontiac 350 2bbl motor but I have not verified the numbers to be sure. The motor runs surprisingly well. It idles smooth and accelerates smooth but looks like the throttle cable sticks. The front seal on the tranny also looks it might be leaking from the car sitting so long. I changed the engine oil, gave it a new battery, added tranny fluid, started it and moved it in and out of the garage to take pictures. You can drive the car as-is if you do some service to the car. The two best things about the car are the color combo and that it is a rust free car.
This car has been a California car that has been stored on pavement all it's life. The only corrosion I could find on the whole car was a small nickel sized bubble at the bottom of the right rear quarter where dirt accumulated. Besides that, the car is completely rock solid. The floors, quarters, trunk floor, rockers, and any metal on the car does NOT need patches, repair, or replacement. Very hard to find one this rust free that is unrestored. Body has had some bondo work on the upper rear pass. quarter by the lower right corner of the rear glass (as shown in pics), that will need to be cleaned up. Besides that, the body lines are nice and straight. Doors open/close and fit the car nice. Car is really pretty straight and original and complete. All the outside trim is there (the rear window trim is in the trunk). Interior and trim looks complete but pretty beat up. Those 14" cragars were put on there a long time ago. Fender tag is still in place. The car is a 261 trim code, which is turquoise interior. The outside paint code is K-K, which is Meridian Turquoise paint. Very cool combo.

The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land
Thu, Oct 15 2015Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top. Airbag recall adds 85k Pontiac Vibes to tally
Fri, 13 Jun 2014The repairs needed for the faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata continue to expand. Toyota initially announced a recall of 766,300 vehicles equipped with the bad part on June 11 as a followup to a campaign from 2013. Soon after, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation into five automakers who also used the component in their models. Now, NHTSA has released the official announcement of the latest Toyota recall listing 844,277 affected cars, including the newly added 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe.
While NHTSA's document didn't include a model-by-model breakdown, General Motors spokesperson Alan Adler estimated to Autoblog that roughly 85,000 Vibes in the US would be covered under the latest recall. Like the rest of the affected models, the airbag inflator could rupture in a crash causing the bag not to work correctly, possibly spraying metal fragments at the occupant.
Toyota spokesperson Cindy Knight told Autoblog that the reason for the disparity between the earlier press release and NHTSA document was that Toyota was continuing to comb through VINs to create a list of affected vehicles. The original number was an estimate of that process at the time. Scroll down to the recall report from NHTSA.
Sci-fi movie Jinn features car designer, Firebird-bodied Camaro
Tue, 08 Apr 2014If you're an automotive engineer being tormented by an immortal being made of fire, then wouldn't you think it best to have a custom coupe called the FireBreather for your getaway car? That's the FireBreather in the image above, adorned by the red wings that once fronted the Pontiac Firebird, running away from a black cloud of evil in a trailer for the movie Jinn.
The Jinn is eternal evil, always waiting for the chance to make things float across rooms before going on homicidal urban rampages. The FireBreather is a Gen-V Chevrolet Camaro - from the V6 to the ZL1 - that's been through Classic Design Concepts' extensive list of exterior and interior modifications, including entirely new front and rear fascias and side skirts, sway bars and springs, Pirelli P Zeroes and an available Edelbrock supercharger.
The movie - FireBreathing chase scenes and all - was shot in Monroe, Michigan. You can watch the trailer below, but since the FireBreather only get a couple of seconds on screen, you can find out more about it on Street Legal TV and its official site.
