Recharge Wrap-up: Toyota FCV ready for production, Nissan tests Leaf-to-Home energy management
Fri, Oct 17 2014Toyota will begin selling its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in Japan in December. The US and Europe can expect to see the car become available next summer. The FCV, which will likely be called "Mirai" (meaning "future") in Japan, is ready for production ahead of its initial deadline at the end of the fiscal year in March. Toyota planned for annual production of 700 units, but might increase output to meet higher-than-expected demand, which is currently nearing 1,000 units. The cars will mostly be sold in the four cities where a hydrogen fueling infrastructure is already being put in place: Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka. Read more at Nikkei Asian Review. Nissan is testing the Leaf EV as part of an energy management system including "Leaf to Home" technology. The system allows the Leaf to help support the power grid during peak energy usage, or provide backup power to a home or building during outages, particularly in emergencies like natural disasters. Using the Leaf's battery to provide electricity during peak hours would lessen the demand on the grid and make the system work more efficiently. Furthermore, if consumers are compensated for the energy saved by using the Leaf for power during periods of high demand, it could encourage more people to adopt the EV. CDP keeps track of how much companies are disclosing about their impact on global climate change. "The need for data on corporate climate change impacts and strategies to reduce them has never been greater," says CDP CEO Paul Simpson. "For this reason we congratulate those businesses that have achieved a position on CDP's Climate Disclosure Leadership Index." Scientists at Stanford University have developed a lithium ion battery that can warn users before it overheats. A thin layer of copper between the anode and the layer separating the anode from the cathode acts as a sensor. When it detects lithium buildups from overcharging are approaching the separator, it sends an early alert long before it gets to a point where it would cause a short (which could lead to a fire). Five automakers now being investigated by NHTSA for airbag woes
Thu, 12 Jun 2014It appears that Toyota's renotification to owners of recalled vehicles from last year is just the tip of the iceberg for what could potentially be a much larger industry-wide recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening a preliminary evaluation investigation into roughly 1.1 million vehicles from Chrysler, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Toyota and parts supplier Takata regarding faulty airbag inflators in several models.
NHTSA has received six reports - three directly, two from Takata and one from Toyota - of vehicles with ruptured airbag inflators from 2002-2006, which resulted in three injuries. So far, all six incidents have occurred in high humidity areas like Florida and Puerto Rico. According to Toyota's latest recall announcement, the inflators may have an improper propellant that could cause it to rupture in a crash and the bag to deploy abnormally.
This new investigation follows a previous recall from April 2013 of about 3.4 million vehicles worldwide for the airbag inflators from Takata. As Autoblog reported, Toyota jumpstarted the new situation when it found that the original list of serial numbers for the faulty part was incomplete and discovered more cars in need of replacement. Honda and Nissan told us that they were investigating whether further models would need called in again as well. Mazda told Autoblog: "Regarding the current Takata situation, we're working closely with NHTSA and investigating the situation, but nothing else to report at this time." Chrysler Group responded to us with the statement: "Chrysler Group engineers are conducting the appropriate analysis. The Company will cooperate fully with the National Highway Traffic Administration."
Nissan could upgrade current GT-R yet again
Thu, Sep 24 2015Heisenberg himself would have been impressed by the unpredictability of the next-generation Nissan GT-R. We're pretty sure one is coming, we think it will be sometime around 2018, it could have a hybrid powertrain with an evolution of the 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 used in the GT-R LM Nismo endurance racer, and there's a chance its looks will point in the direction of the Nissan Concept 2010 Vision Gran Turismo concept. Oh, and rumor is that no matter what comes next, Nissan-Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn wants to sell more of them every month; GT-R sales are up about 40 units through August compared to last year, but that's still just 891 examples. What's Nissan going to do with the current GT-R for the next three years? According to a chat Top Gear had with Phillipe Klein, the company's head of product planning, Nissan can do more with the R35. Klein said, "We are very serious about this vehicle and its future," and, "There is still development potential there, always." That could mean any number of things, since we never have any idea what Nissan is going to do or not do with the GT-R. If Klein is talking about engineering more performance from this package and it's 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V6, does that mean a notable increase in horsepower for the standard version, or does that mean a super-duper edition hotter and faster around the 'Ring than the 600-hp, $149,990 GT-R Nismo? Or is it something else – because, frankly, the GT-R has plenty of performance right now and it's not the coupe's stat-sheet numbers that are holding it back.
