Nissan says Leaf battery packs are nearly bulletproof
Wed, Mar 25 2015Like the old 1970s Schoolhouse Rock song (and an early-90s remake from hip-hop artists De La Soul), three, indeed, is the magic number. That's how many Nissan Leaf batteries have conked out in Europe during the past four-plus years. Out of about 35,000. I'd hate to be a member of that unlucky trio. The Japanese automaker says it has shut up the naysayers who once crowed that electric motors may be less reliable than gas- or diesel-powered engines. Nissan has done so by maintaining a 99.99 percent "battery success rate" in Europe. With only an on-board charger, inverter and motor, the Leaf's electric motor costs 40 percent less to maintain that gas- or diesel-powered engines. Nissan does seem to be getting more converts across the Pond. Nissan boosted European sales of the Leaf by about 33 percent last year to more than 15,000 units. Meanwhile, here in the States, sales jumped 34 percent last year to more than 30,000 vehicles, though early 2015 sales appear to be down as lower gas prices are leading American car shoppers to larger, more gas-swilling vehicles. Still, Nissan recently said it surpassed sales of 75,000 units in the US and we expect the March sales numbers to show that the Leaf has become the top-selling plug-in vehicle in US history. Nissan recalls nearly 20,000 NV vans over gearshift issue
Tue, 26 Mar 2013Nissan is recalling 18,800 NV vans built between December 20, 2010 and January 4, 2013. Certain 2012 and 2013 models equipped with a steering-column-mounted transmission shift levers may have been built with improperly installed shift mechanisms.
If the NV's gear selector plate lock clip wasn't installed correctly, normal road vibration could result in a gear position indicator that does not match the actual gear selection. As a result, when the driver selects 'park,' the transmission could still be in gear or in neutral, and roll away. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says this condition greatly increased the risk of accident and injury.
Nissan will inspect the gear selector lock clip and replace the part if necessary free of charge. Owners can expect to be notified once the recall campaign begins on April 8, 2013. Read the full recall notice below for more information.
Nissan considering Rogue Hybrid for US
Thu, Apr 16 2015If Nissan can pull 48 miles per gallon out of a hybrid version of the Rogue we say "go for it" to the rumored discussions it may be considering just such a vehicle for the United States. The Japanese automaker is already gearing up to start selling the X-Trail (the JDM Rogue) in hybrid form in Japan. So why not the US? Indeed, the compact crossover may soon get a hybrid version here, Automotive News says, citing comments from Rogue chief engineer Nobusuke Toukura. The X-Trail Hybrid, which goes on sale in Japan next month, cuts nitrogen oxide emissions by 75 percent compared to the gas-powered version while offering more torque from of a smaller gas engine. The model, which sells in the $23,000-to-$27,000 range, also gets an impressive 48 mpg (on the more lenient Japan driving cycle). NIssan USA spokesman Brian Brockman said the company hadn't made any announcements regarding a possible Rogue Hybrid for the US and declined to comment further. The Rogue is Nissan's second-best-selling model in the US, behind the Altima. Through March, Rogue sales were up 28 percent from a year earlier to more than 64,000 units. While hybrids account for a far higher percentage of new vehicles in Japan than in the US, increased US fuel-economy standards combined with the model's popularity make the Rogue Hybrid a fairly logical next step for the model.
