Nissan, Toyota offering payment deferments to people affected by government shutdown

Two weeks into the budget-related government shutdown and it sounds like some progress is finally being made, but that doesn't really help furloughed government employees pay their bills. To help out a little, Nissan and Toyota are joining Hyundai with offering payment deferments to current owners and lessees.
In a release, a Nissan spokesperson said the company is "sympathetic to any of our customers who find themselves in difficult financial circumstances - many times outside of their control."
Both Japanese automakers are allowing payment extensions of up to 90 days without penalties or fees. Unlike the Hyundai Assurance Plan, though, it doesn't seem like the Nissan or Toyota assistance will be extended to those who are still in the buying process. Trump declaration they're a security threat stuns Japanese automakers

TOKYO — Japan's automakers' lobby said on Tuesday it was dismayed by President Donald Trump's declaration that some imported vehicles and parts posed a threat to U.S. national security, as the industry braces for a possible rise in U.S. tariffs. Trump made the unprecedented designation of foreign vehicles on Friday but delayed for up to six months a decision on whether to impose tariffs to allow for more time for trade talks with Japan and the European Union. "We are dismayed to hear a message suggesting that our long-time contributions of investment and employment in the United States are not welcomed," said Akio Toyoda, chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. "As chairman, I am deeply saddened by this decision," Toyoda, president of Toyota, said in a statement. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs of up to 25% on imported cars made by foreign automakers, a move which automakers have argued would ramp up car prices, curb the global competitiveness of U.S.-made vehicles and limit investment in the country, the world's No. 2 auto market. The United States is a vital market for Toyota, Nissan, Honda and other Japanese car makers. Autos and components are among the Asian country's biggest export products. Most of Japan's major automakers operate plants in the United States. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association notes that its automakers build about 4 million vehicles a year in North America, or 75 percent of what it sells here. Many are built for export, helping lessen the U.S. trade deficit Trump is concerned about. Major automakers have announced a slew of investments in the United States since Trump took office in January 2017 and put pressure on the industry to create more U.S. jobs. For its part, Toyota has pledged to invest almost $13 billion in the United States between 2017 and 2021 to boost manufacturing capacity and jobs. Chevy Volt beats Nissan Leaf again in February

For Chevy, February was a good month for Volt sales. They were up 62.5 percent compared to 2015, as the company locked in 1,126 sales. No one should be surprised, since buyers have a new generation Volt to look at on the lot this year. It was introduced late last year in just 11 states, with the nationwide roll-out not happening until this spring. Nonetheless, GM put the new Volt on sale in the states where it sold the most first-gen Volts, so the sales increase was totally expected. Year-to-date, Volt sales are up 71.8 percent: 2,122 for 2016 vs. 1,235 for January and February of 2015. Over in the Nissan lot, things look pretty much the same. By that I mean both the numbers (steadily down, recently) as well as the car itself. We've had numerous hints about a new Leaf, but nothing confirmed, and that means that fewer and fewer people are interested in the aging first-gen model. By the numbers, Nissan sold 930 Leaf EVs in the US last month, down 22.4 percent from the 1,198 it sold in February 2015. For the first two months of the year, Leaf sales are down 25.7 percent: 1,685 in 2016 compared to 2,268 in 2015.
