Nissan Leaf is now the best-selling plug-in vehicle of all time in US
Thu, Apr 2 2015Numbers don't lie. And in some instances, you can see their truth from miles away. As everyone expected, the Nissan Leaf is now officially the best-selling plug-in vehicle in the US. While the two vehicles aren't direct competitors (one's a pure EV and the other is a plug-in hybrid), they certainly dominate the plug-in vehicle sales charts. When we do a little math on those charts, we see that since the two vehicles went on sale at the end of 2010, the Volt has sold 75,231 units while the Leaf is now at 76,407, giving the Leaf a 1,176-vehicle lead. The Leaf trailed the Volt by just two units at the end of February. This is the first time the EV had held the overall lead since the end of February 2012, when it was ahead 10,847 to 9,623 and for a while there at the end of 2013, the Volt was up by around 12,000 units. Times have changed, though, and we don't expect the lead to switch back until the next-gen Volt goes on sale later this year, and even then nothing is certain. The Leaf sold 1,817 copies last month, a drop of 27.5 percent from last year. Year-to-date, the Leaf has sold 4,085 units, down 21.2 percent from the same time period in 2014. This is Nissan's 2014 Detroit Auto Show concept
Tue, 20 Aug 2013During a media event in Los Angeles today, Nissan flashed a few images of a new concept car that will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January. According to Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and chief creative officer of design and brand management at Nissan, this unnamed concept has a "very strong design signature" and shows "[Nissan's] future design direction."
It's certainly quite sleek, this concept, yet specific elements like the front fascia and taillamps are evolutionary steps from what we're seeing on some of Nissan's newest products. Those rear lamps look like sleeker versions of what the Sentra wears, and that grille appears to be a more stylized version of what the next-generation Rogue has been seen sporting.
As for what, exactly, this concept previews, that's still up in the air, though our best guess is that it hints at a Maxima successor. After all, Nissan did confirm to us that a new Maxima is currently in development, and showing this concept in early 2014 lines up with our predictions that the next-generation sedan should arrive in time for the 2015 model year.
Nissan will reduce its presence in Europe as part of turnaround plan
Sun, Jan 3 2021TOKYO — Nissan is planning to further reduce its presence in Europe and outsource the sales and manufacturing of its cars to alliance partner Renault, the daily Yomiuri newspaper reported on Friday. As part of its global turnaround plan, which is reversing a rapid expansion led by the ousted former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, Nissan will cut its distribution channels in thirty countries, mainly in East Europe. It is also planning to close its Avila plant in Spain and convert it into a warehouse, the report said. The report didn't provide details of the scale of the outsourcing. Calls to Nissan's public relations office went unanswered on Friday, a public holiday in Japan. The Japanese motor company is currently moving its operations away from Europe and shifting its focus to China, the United States, and Japan. Nissan, which expects to post a record operating loss of 340 billion yen ($3.25 billion) in the year to March 31, is cutting production capacity and model numbers by a fifth and aims to slash operating expenses by 300 billion yen over three years. The company's three-way alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi Motor was plunged into uncertainty in 2018, when Ghosn was arrested on financial misconduct charges, which he denies. He later fled Japan while being monitored by law enforcement and awaiting trial at his residence.
