Junkyard Gem: 1995 Mitsubishi Diamante Station Wagon

Tue, Apr 4 2017

Chrysler sold Dodge- and Plymouth-badged Mitsubishis in the United States starting in the early 1970s, but it wasn't until the 1983 model year that Mitsubishi sold cars under their own name on this side of the Pacific. The Diamante made its American debut for the 1992 model year, but it proved unable to steal many sales from the likes of Lexus and Infiniti and not many were sold. Sure, it was big and comfortable, but SUV and minivan sales soon squeezed most wagons out of the American marketplace. Here's a rare '95 station wagon, spotted in a California yard recently. 240,664 miles on the clock, which is much higher than the not-very-trashed interior might suggest. The owner or owners of this car got their money's worth out of it. The 6G72 3.0-liter V6 went into Chrysler minivans, Mitsubishi 3000GTs, and many members of the extended Chrysler K-Car family; production of this versatile engine continued well into our current century. This one was rated at 175 horsepower. Technically, this isn't a Japanese car, since the Diamante wagons were built in Australia. Rumor has it that some 5-speed Diamante wagons were sold in the United States, but I have never seen one. 1995 was the last year for the Diamante wagon in the United States, and the Camry and Accord wagons soon got the axe as well. Meanwhile, Japanese-market Diamante ads got roaring engines, macho voiceovers, and dramatic music. 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV shown, full details coming October 28

Thu, Oct 14 2021

The wait for details on the plug-in hybrid 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander are almost over. The company has been promising the model for quite a while, and it has been tight-lipped about details. But on October 28, the company will reveal nearly all before the SUV's U.S. launch in the second-half of 2022. In the meantime, Mitsubishi released photos of the plug-in model. As you can plainly see, it looks pretty much identical to the non-hybrid variant. The only real exception are the large hybrid badges placed on the doors and on the hatch. The white example in the photos also showcases a black contrast roof that's seemingly unavailable on non-hybrid Outlanders. The interior is also virtually unchanged. Mitsubishi also let slip one other interesting tidbit about the Outlander PHEV before the full reveal: it comes standard with a third row of seats. This is a change from the previous model that was two-row only. This is also interesting considering that Mitsubishi has previously said the new PHEV will have more battery capacity than the outgoing model. When the electrified Outlander has its official reveal in a couple weeks, we should have far more details on the powertrain. We're expecting it will continue to use a pair of electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the rears. The engine will probably run mainly in a series-hybrid configuration, generating electricity for the motors, and only engaging the drivetrain under particular circumstances in which doing so would provide the necessary power and when it's efficient. Pricing will probably have to wait until closer to the Outlander's on-sale date next year. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Mitsubishi boss labels French minister a "retard" for "ruining the lives of motorists" [UPDATE]

Thu, 25 Oct 2012

Arnaud Montebourg (pictured), French Minister of Industrial Recovery, was recently the target of a rather despicable slur at the hands of Mitsubishi France's leader, Jean-Claude Debard.
Frustrated by Montebourg's attempts to encourage the purchase of lower emitting vehicles and discourage use of high-emission vehicles - by way of tax breaks and tax hikes, respectively - Debard reportedly used the occasion of a new product launch to call the minister "stupid," a "mental case" and a "retard" before members of the media. Here's the full quote, as reported by the French newspaper La Provence by way of The Telegraph:
"This mental case, this retard, increases ecological taxes, reduces the speed motorists can go on Paris' ring road and ruins the life of motorists from all social origins all suffer as a result of him. He is stupid and understands nothing, you can quote me on that."
