When a Dodge Grand Caravan or Ford Windstar mini-van pulls alongside you at the stoplight, you have to pause and wonder what's so mini about a vehicle that stretches from your front to rear bumper and holds seven people? The mini-van label has been awarded to a slew of vehicles. As evidence that mini may be a misnomer on most of those vans, you need only check out the 1994 Mitsubishi Expo, which holds seven people. Mitsubishi calls the Expo a sport wagon even though it looks like a van. Truth be told, Expo is a mini-van built on a 99.2-inch wheelbase and only 168.5 inches long. Those dimensions make it a true mini, considering the regular Dodge/Plymouth mini-van is built on a 112.3-inch wheelbase and is 178.1 inches long. Whether you call it a wagon or a van, the Expo is a weird-looking bird. The only way you can lose an Expo in a parking lot is if you are legally blind. Like the Mitsubishi Montero sport-utility vehicle, the Expo roof line seems to tickle the clouds. While Montero styling comes across as outdated and ugly, Expo is novel and borders on cute. The tall roof line means ample head room, yet you don't feel the raised center of gravity when behind the wheel trying to maneuver the streets. In fact, Expo performed admirably on snow-packed surfaces. While the roof line reaches for the clouds, the storage space behind the rear seat takes on an ample serving of groceries, luggage or golf clubs. The one styling drawback is you don't see the sloping hood from the driver's seat. That leaves you with the impression that there isn't much crush space between you and anything ahead. The Expo is new for '94, a 2.4-liter, 136-horsepower, 16-valve 4-cylinder and automatic.. The 2.4 is rated at 25 m.p.g. city, 27 highway, though the tortoise-like movement of the gas needle made that seem a bit low. Standard equipment includes driver-side air bag (new for '94), plus air conditioning (with chlorofluorocarbon-free refrigerant), AM/FM stereo with cassette, power windows/door locks, remote keyless entry, power remote mirrors, cruise control, tinted glass, rear wiper/washer/defroster, four-wheel independent suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, 14-inch all-season tires, power brakes and steering, tilt steering, cloth seats, reclining front bucket seats, foldable/removable rear seat and stainless steel exhaust. Minnesota couple puts 414k miles on a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage
Tue, Dec 1 2020A couple in Minnesota just traded in their 414,000-mile 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage, which is notable for any car, topping many of the Junkyard Gems we've featured. We were also impressed because that's a lot of miles in a car that we weren't especially fond of. But the couple that owned it, Jerry and Janice Huot, clearly liked it. Dubbed the "Purple Won" in a nod to Prince, the subcompact endured six upper Midwest winters as an all-purpose utility and delivery vehicle. "I always loved the comments at gas stations and grocery stores and waves from people as I’d drive by," Jerry said. "Kids would always stop and point. Everybody seemed to love that car; it would make everyone smile whenever they saw it." The Huots were repeat Mitsubishi buyers in search of something with better fuel efficiency than their Cadillac. While Mitsubishi didn't specify which model the Huots traded in, it's safe to say that whatever it was, the 2014 Mirage would have been a significant upgrade in that respect, as it was rated at 37 mpg in the city, 44 on the highway and 40 combined when it was sold new; the EPA has since re-rated it at 36/42/39.  "Right in the middle of the showroom was this little purple Mirage that got 44 mpg," Janice told Mitsubishi. "IÂ’d had an Outlander Sport and Montero Sport before and loved them, so it seemed like a good choice. We drove the Mirage home that day, right off the showroom floor." "Janice drove it mostly for the first 7,000 miles or so, but when winter came, she wanted all-wheel-drive, so she got a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport," Jerry says. "But then I started using the Mirage for my business. I am a courier. I deliver samples from various doctorsÂ’ offices to labs, so I drive up and down the state and around town in Minneapolis all the time. The Mirage never missed a beat. It got me up and out of our gravel driveway, even in the middle of winter, when others got stuck in the snow." According to the Huots, the Mirage only needed two noteworthy repairs on its way to 414,000 miles: a replacement starter motor between 200,000 and 300,000 miles and a new set of wheel bearings some time after 150k, both of which they say were addressed under warranty. We checked with Mitsubishi, who confirmed that the Huots purchased an extended warranty from the dealership, hence the coverage of failed items at such high mileage. Apart from that, the Huots say it has needed only regularly scheduled maintenance. What replaced it? Another Mirage, predictably.
Mexican police seize engine-powered drug cannon
Fri, 01 Mar 2013It seems like we're always hearing about new ways in which people are trying to smuggle things into the US from Mexico - including simply driving over the wall. Case in point? Mexican police have found yet another way criminals are attempting to get drugs over the border. Mexicali police have seized what looks to be either a Mitsubishi Mighty Max or Dodge Ram 50 pickup, equipped with what is essentially an oversized spud gun in the bed used to shoot marijuana over the border.
Constructed from a metal tank and a large plastic pipe, The Guardian reports that this drug cannon actually uses a car engine to build up enough air pressure to launch up to 13 kilos of marijuana at a time. Mexicali police were alerted to this truck when their US counterparts found drug packages on this side of the border. As of yet, there is no word as to how the vehicle was caught and whether any arrests resulted.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV van variant coming to Europe
Thu, Aug 28 2014Mitsubishi's Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV will be hitting our shores this fall. Across the Pond, however, it's heading into more no-nonsense territory. That's because the Japanese automaker is making a commercial van variant of the plug-in hybrid for the UK. Mitsubishi will start selling a model called the Outlander PHEV GX3h 4Work in the UK, Motoring Research says. Like the SUV, the model will pair a 2.0-liter gas engine with an electric motor and will have an all-electric range of 32 miles. The difference is that the back seats will be taken out and the glass will be blacked out. Hardcore, we say. The model will be priced at 36,905 British pounds (about $61,000), though buyers are eligible for a government grant worth 7,381 pounds ($12,200). Mitsubishi plans to start selling the Outlander PHEV stateside in Fall 2015. The company said earlier this summer that the US version will be substantially different from the current version, with updates for everything from exterior and interior styling to powertrain efficiency improvements. The model had some battery-melting issues last year in Japan, though Mitsubishi ramped up its production once those problems were solved. Mitsubishi representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about the commercial-van variant from AutoblogGreen, but we expect to be hearing more about it soon.
