Mitsubishi recalls 141,000 Lancers, Outlanders, and Outlander Sports
Wed, May 27 2020Mitsubishi issued two recalls this month, one big, one small, that affect several cars from the brand's past and current lineup. The major recall covers old Lancers, Lancer Sportbacks, Outlanders, and Outlander Sports that might have an issue with corrosion weakening the suspension. The second recall affects the current-generation Outlander and Outlander PHEV that have improperly built seat belt assemblies. NHTSA campaign No. 20V279000 states that Mitsubishi is recalling 141,200 2008-2010 Lancers, 2010 Lancer Sportbacks, 2008-2013 Outlanders, and 2011-2016 Outlander Sports due to the possibility that the front cross member on these vehicles might be damaged. If these vehicles encountered road salt, snowmelt water, and anti-freezing agents, the cross member could corrode. If the cross member corrodes, there is a slight possibility the front control arm could detach and create an extremely dangerous situation. This recall only pertains to vehicles in the Salt Belt region, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington D.C. Mitsubishi dealerships will inspect affected cars and make a judgment call from there. If the damage is minimal or non-existent, Mitsubishi will spray and seal the cross member with new anti-corrosion protection. If the cross member is damaged, Mitsubishi will replace it for free. NHTSA campaign No. 20V280000 affects 3,238 2019-2020 Outlanders and 2019 Outlander PHEVs due to potentially faulty seat belts. On these vehicles the seat belts for the second-row passenger-side seat might have the wrong part. "Due to inappropriate manufacturing process at the supplier, the guide piece (which is a component part of the second-row seat belts’ anchorage) for the left side seat belt was mistakenly assembled with the right side seat belt, causing seat belt restraint efficiency for vehicle occupants to decrease in the vehicle collisions," a recall document states. Mitsubishi dealerships will inspect the seat belts in affected cars and replace them, if necessary. It is believed only 1% of the 3,238 vehicles have the defect. Visit the NHTSA for more information.
Mitsubishi bringing Emirai 3 to Tokyo?
Fri, Oct 23 2015Inquiring minds really want to know if the W-shaped steering wheel will return on Mitsubishi's newest iteration of the Emirai electric concept vehicle. The Japanese automaker is slated to show off the third variant of this interesting concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of the month, according to Technologic Vehicles. Beyond the facts that the car is a two-seater and runs on electric power, we don't have many details to share just yet. One specific item we do know, though, is that concept will once again offer close monitoring of the driver's physical state. In this case, the car is said to use cloud-based data to gauge the driver's physical condition, so the concept goes well beyond the types of sensors we see in other vehicles that offer features like collision avoidance and lane maintenance. The car is also missing doors, which doesn't necessary help the driver's physical state but is still pretty cool-looking. The model could see the light of day – and limited production – by the end of the decade. Two years ago, Mitsubishi brought its Emirai 2 concept car to Tokyo. That super-futuristic vehicle included a biometrics feature that adjusted the driver's seat based on the user's facial temperature and heart rate. It also had a W-shaped steering wheel straight out of a Superfriends cartoon. Mitsubishi was an early entrant in the electric-vehicle sector with its i-MiEV, though that model has been selling in the single-digit figures in recent months. Now that we have a few year's worth of hindsight, the i's jellybean shape looks pretty pedestrian compared to the Emirai. News Source: Technologic Vehicles Green Tokyo Motor Show Mitsubishi Electric
2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV shown, full details coming October 28
Thu, Oct 14 2021The wait for details on the plug-in hybrid 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander are almost over. The company has been promising the model for quite a while, and it has been tight-lipped about details. But on October 28, the company will reveal nearly all before the SUV's U.S. launch in the second-half of 2022. In the meantime, Mitsubishi released photos of the plug-in model. As you can plainly see, it looks pretty much identical to the non-hybrid variant. The only real exception are the large hybrid badges placed on the doors and on the hatch. The white example in the photos also showcases a black contrast roof that's seemingly unavailable on non-hybrid Outlanders. The interior is also virtually unchanged. Mitsubishi also let slip one other interesting tidbit about the Outlander PHEV before the full reveal: it comes standard with a third row of seats. This is a change from the previous model that was two-row only. This is also interesting considering that Mitsubishi has previously said the new PHEV will have more battery capacity than the outgoing model. When the electrified Outlander has its official reveal in a couple weeks, we should have far more details on the powertrain. We're expecting it will continue to use a pair of electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the rears. The engine will probably run mainly in a series-hybrid configuration, generating electricity for the motors, and only engaging the drivetrain under particular circumstances in which doing so would provide the necessary power and when it's efficient. Pricing will probably have to wait until closer to the Outlander's on-sale date next year. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences.
