Mini John Cooper Works gets ready to rumble
Fri, 14 Nov 2014Mini gave us our first taste of its next-generation John Cooper Works Hardtop in concept form at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. And in fact, we already know that the production version will make its debut at the 2015 Detroit show in January. Fitting, then, that this most recent round of spy shots shows a JCW that's pretty much ready to roll - peel back that yellow swirly paper, and you've pretty much got the final deal.
It's easy to make out the final design for the revised front and rear fascias, and we can clearly see a more robust brake package nestled behind those alloy wheels. Speaking of, we must admit, the wheels here look rather pedestrian for a JCW model, but they could just be prototype rollers and not indicative of the final rolling stock. We expect the flashy red decals of the concept to be offered on the production model, as well, though they could be optional kit.
As reported earlier, power is expected to come from a 230-horsepower turbo-four - a modest increase over the 208 hp from the outgoing Mini JCW. Expect that to route through a six-speed manual transmission, sending turbocharged oomph to the front wheels.
David Brown Automotive remasters classic Mini at maxi price
Fri, Apr 7 2017Just days ago, we reported that the British small-scale maker of luxurious, Aston Martin inspired coupes, David Brown Automotive, was about to introduce a new, cheaper vehicle positioned under its exquisitely priced Speedback GT model. Since the Jaguar-based Speedback GT costs a significant $753,000, there's quite a bit of room underneath it to introduce a more modest means of transport, without cheapening out. Now, details of the car, dubbed "Project 2," have surfaced, and it's quite a surprise. What David Brown Automotive has come up with is a "remastered," rethought classic Mini. While the car looks just like a Mini at a passing glance, the body panels along with the chassis are new, and the car has been given a smoothening. All the body seams that were commonplace on the classic original have been rounded off, and the interior is a custom job complete with plentiful leather and Pioneer touchscreen. The new dashboard is a little closer to Japanese retro cars than either the classic Mini or the current, BMW-made equivalent. The drivetrain remains the trusted 1,275cc original along with a four-speed gearbox; both are reconditioned units instead of box-fresh ones, but they feature brand-new parts. There's 79 horsepower on offer, which is plenty of poke for a Mini. Each of the cars will take about 1,000 hours to make, by hand. The plan is to build 100-200 of these Mini re-creations per year, at David Brown's new facility in Silverstone, England. In two years, only 11 Speedbacks have been built, so the Mini should create a bit more buzz at the workshop. But the price? Starting from $62,000 at current rates, going all the way to $86,000 if you want one with all the trimmings. A lot for a Mini, but it's going to be special. Related Video:
Mini Multitone Edition brings triple-color roof to more models
Wed, Aug 31 2022Last year's refreshed Mini line-up introduced the "Multitone" roof for the Mini Cooper SE. It featured three paint colors on the roof that faded into one another. Now that option is available on many more Minis with the Multitone Edition, which also picks up a unique design and trim pieces to accent the fancy top. The Multitone Edition is available on all Mini 3-Door and 5-Door Hardtops as well as the Clubman wagon. The Hardtops are only offered in "Sage Green" while the Clubman only comes in "Indian Summer Red." All of them get a Multitone roof in white, silver and black (the blue and red options from the SE seem to remain exclusive to the little electric hatch). Setting this grayscale roof apart is a set of perpendicular "rainbow" stripes done in a satin clearcoat. This motif is continued around the car where it appears in the two-tone green and red badging on the wheels and fender "scuttles." It also appears on the dashboard and other interior trim. And on the topic of trim, parts that were chrome on regular Mini models are a bright gloss white such as the light surrounds, door handles and fuel filler cap on S models. Two-tone alloy wheels are offered in 17- and 18-inch sizes. Pricing and availability haven't been announced yet. Expect to see the option available sometime this year, and a small premium over whatever trim level it's added to. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party.
