Mini teases third-gen hatch to debut next week

Mon, 11 Nov 2013

All it takes is a small spark to set off a fire. Just look at what has happened since BMW brought back the Mini in the early 2000s. What started with a hatchback has since spawned more bodystyles than we care to count and almost as many imitators. The second generation followed in 2007, and now Mini is preparing to launch the third.
The new Mini is scheduled to debut a week from now on November 18 at the Oxford plant in England, just days before the LA Auto Show and Tokyo Motor Show kick off and on the birthday of the original's designer Sir Alec Issigonis.
The third generation of the popular retro hatchback is expected to closely follow the lead set by the Mini Vision concept revealed a few months ago, but then we already knew that, having seen numerous undisguised photos of the new car in action. Still, the half-minute teaser video embedded below does a decent job of drumming up some enthusiasm, so if you're enamored of the Anglo-Saxon retromobile, head on down to check it out.

Mini will launch two additional crossovers to expand its footprint

Mon, Jun 15 2020

Mini will maximize its global potential by releasing two crossovers during the 2020s, according to a recent report. The first will bolster the firm's electrification efforts, while the second will be positioned at the top of its range. The BMW-owned company's vast heritage makes expanding its presence in the crossover segment a tricky proposition, but executives believe they've blazed a way forward. The Countryman's first high-riding sibling will be an electric model developed jointly by Mini and China-based Great Wall Motors and built in the latter's home country. BMW announced the joint venture in late 2019, though it didn't specify which vehicle(s) it would build. Autocar learned the model, which could resurrect the Paceman nameplate, will be about as big as the current-generation X1, meaning it will slot slightly above the Countryman (pictured) in terms of size. It will arrive as a four-door soft-roader built on a platform developed through the joint venture, and it will benefit from a new generation of batteries manufactured without cobalt, an element mined in often-difficult conditions. Mini will dig even deeper into its past to name the second crossover it's working on. Executives favor the Traveller nameplate, which was introduced in 1960 on a Morris-badged version of the Austin Mini Countryman wagon. The model will inevitably become the poster child of the company's ongoing un-Minization process, but it should play a significant role in turning around its fortunes in key markets like the United States and China.  "The Countryman is a small SUV. In the United States and China, there are certain needs. We will look at a compact SUV in the next generation. There are lots of benefits with a car like that for urban use. For me, it's a good match," said Bernd Korber, the company's boss, in an interview with the magazine. Upsizing Mini's image will require borrowing the CLAR architecture currently found under BMW's X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7, though don't expect a jumbo-sized people-hauler masquerading as a city car. "We can stretch the interpretation of Mini always being the smallest, but I can't imagine being bigger in a segment. We need to fulfill a requirement on size," Korber stressed. It sounds like, size-wise, the Traveller may fall between the X1 and the X3. BMW's CLAR platform will make the Traveller the first Mini equipped with a longitudinally-mounted engine, and its first rear-wheel drive production car.

Mini John Cooper Works previewed in camo keeping gas performance alive

Mon, May 20 2024

Curious about the next Mini Cooper JCW? Well, here’s a great sneak peek, as Mini just dropped a cache of photos showing it in race guise and wearing a thin layer of camouflage. WeÂ’ve already seen the electric John Cooper Works version of the two-door hardtop Mini, but this is the gas-powered variant. Many of the design elements weÂ’re seeing here like the grille, front lower side vents, rear bumper and more should make their way to the production car, which Mini says will be revealed this fall. The grille might be new, but it looks a whole lot like the front end we saw on the outgoing Mini Cooper JCW. That said, it adopts the new shape and minimalist vibes from the 2025 Mini weÂ’ve seen in the less-sporty variants. The rear end with its taillights are what we expect from the production car, though the rear diffuser shouldnÂ’t be anywhere near that aggressive. The specific car youÂ’re looking at here is covered in red and white camo as an homage to the red and white color schemes used in the 1960s for Minis in motorsports. It also has a “37” logo to commemorate the Mini Cooper SÂ’ victory (a car wearing 37) at the 1964 Rallye Monte Carlo. We still donÂ’t know specs, but since Mini is done with manual transmissions, expect this JCW to feature an automatic paired with an updated version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the outgoing model. It should also feature a sportier version of the interior weÂ’ve already seen in the new Cooper. All the details will be made available before the year is out, but for now, enjoy these photos as a preview of whatÂ’s to come.
