1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 Hardtop

Nicely built performance-modified 302 V-8, automatic transmission, independent coil spring front suspension, rear leaf spring suspension with traction control bars, Straight panels throughout, 111” wheelbase

One of the nicest looking of all the Cougar body styles, this 1968 XR-7 Hardtop will make the next lucky owner a wonderful cruiser as-is, or could easily be the foundation for a complete restoration. The body is straight and has never been hit, with great panel gaps, and mechanically, it runs great and has just 1,500 miles on the engine. The paint is admittedly not 100%, and could use refreshing at some point, but still turns heads from 10 feet. It has very good chrome, a nice interior, and all original glass, with the correct 302 V-8 engine engine that has been expertly built and features a slew of go-fast components. It’s a car that can be enjoyed immediately, and could easily be the star of any local car show with just a little TLC.

Starting with a correct 1968 302 block, it was bored out to .060 over stock, and loaded with TRW Power Forged pistons and all reciprocal assemblies are completely balanced and blueprinted. The block was studded with ARP studs, Competition Cams chrome-moly pushrods installed, and Fel-Pro graphite injected gaskets were used. New trick flow Twisted Cylinder heads were utilized, with Harland Sharpe Roller Rockers, an Edelbrock RPM Intake Manifold and matching performance camshaft. An Edelbrock double-roller timing chain was used, and it is all covered up by Ford Motorsports dress-up valve covers and air cleaner.

The engine is fed by a Holly 600 CFM 4 barrel carburetor, with K & N filters, and a complete MSD ignition system and an aluminum billet distributor. The engine breathes through a custom headers and a 2 1/4 ” X-pipe Pypes exhaust system from the headers on back. It starts easily, runs strong, sounds great, and is really fast. Dyno tested last year, the revised 302 now pushes out 375 HP.

Nice enough to enjoy as is, or the perfect starting point for a full restoration, this car is a wonderful entry point into the world of great muscle cars of the 60’s. Channel your inner Dan Gurney and enjoy the pony car that is just a bit more luxurious than any Mustang.

Fitting Retirement: Grand Marquis last Mercury off the line

Wed, 05 Jan 2011

The signs have come down and retail production ended back in October of 2010. Now, the very last Mercury model has rolled off the assembly line. This last Mercury somewhat fittingly takes the form of a Grand Marquis reporting for fleet duty. It was built at the St. Thomas plant in Ontario, Canada, which is the same facility that continues to produce the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car for fleet and livery duty.
St. Thomas' days are numbered, however, as the factory is slated to close on August 31. When it goes, the Panther platform is likely to follow. So long, and thanks for all the fish memories.

NHTSA investigating 725k Ford, Mercury vehicles for stalling issue

Mon, 25 Feb 2013

Owners of Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models, listen up. According to a report on Automotive News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into these four vehicles totaling an estimated 725,000 units. The investigation appears to center around a malfunctioning throttle body on non-hybrid models of the 2005-2012 Escape and 2011-2012 Fusion. With Mercury dying off after the 2011 model year, this probe will also apply to the 2005 through 2011 Mariner and the 2011 Milan. There has been some discussion around the Escape stalling issue for some time now, but this investigation appears to be larger in scope than before.
Though not a recall yet, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 123 complaints of stalling or surging vehicles, while Ford itself has logged 1,472 complaints. The investigation report, which is posted below, seems to indicate that a faulty circuit board for the throttle body could cause the vehicle to go into limp mode, which, according to NHTSA, could cause complaints of both stalling and surging.

Ford Recalling 70k Escape and Mariner Hybrids for cooling issue

Fri, 12 Sep 2014

Ford is recalling about 70,209 examples of the 2005-2008 Ford Escape Hybrid and the 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid because the cooling pumps for their hybrid systems could fail.
According to the company's defect notice, it's possible for the original "Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump" to wear out and fail, which would could cause the hybrid system to overheat. If this happens, the vehicle goes into a safety mode that takes away most or all of its power. However, braking and steering still operate normally. After cooling down, the affected models restart normally. The company says that it's not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem.
Ford will begin repairing the vehicles in late October, and dealers will be installing improved, brushless pumps on the affected models at no charge to owners. If drivers had their pumps fail before this recall, they can contact Ford for a possible reimbursement.
