I've had this Comet for about 3 years now. Don't have the time or money to go any further with it.

It's been off the road for almost 10 years, so it's not ready for the next owner to drive it home. Please plan on having it towed.

The engine is a 302 from a 1969 Mustang. I saw the Mustang that it came out of (The owner installed a 429 in place of the 302) and checked the casting number on the block to verify. It has an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and a Holley 600 vacuum secondary carb. The Carburetor runs a little rich and could stand to be rebuilt or replaced with a better one.

I've replaced the starter, water pump ,hoses, belts, plugs and wires, along with the starter solenoid and battery.

The Transmission is a C4 automatic. I added a large Hayden tranny cooler in front of the radiator.

The radiator is a 3 core brass, if I recall correctly. It came with the car and I installed it when the original one disintegrated. The hoses are pieced together because of the early style water pump mixed with the later style radiator.

The exhaust is factory manifold to a "custom" (hacked together) dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers. It's not pretty, but it sounds nice. The drivers side chrome tip has rusted off and the passenger side isn't too far behind. The rest of the piping is solid, but as I said, not pretty to look at.

It has power steering and manual brakes. The power steering is that awful hydraulic ram style. I was planning on replacing with a manual box. Brakes are disc front and drum rear. Currently they are pretty rusted and the car doesn't move easily.

Tires are decent front and rear. 14 inch Coopers on Cragar SS wheels. I believe they are 205's in the rear and 185's in the front.

Body is in good shape for a Northeast car. A tree branch fell on the driver's side door last year breaking the window and leaving a baseball sized dent. I replaced the window and haven't really had time to do anything else since then. Small dents/dings and scratches here and there. Grille is missing some slats. Have a spare grille in similar condition for repair that goes with it. Also have a nos front bumper that goes with it if desired. Very little rust bubbling up here and there. No major rot except for a small patch visible on the upper support under the driver's side fender. Its visible in the underhood photo. There is a small section of cracked filler on the upper driver's side 1/4. The bondo is very thin. It looks like a skim coat for the paint.

The paint has seen better days. Looks decent in the pics and from 10-20 feet.

The door locks have recently stopped working with the keys. I'm certain that these are the only keys I have had. The key works in the ignition and the trunk key works.

The interior is tan and dirty. The carpet is torn. The vinyl on the seat is split on the bottom .Headliner is up and in nice shape. Rear package tray is missing. The dash top has a crack on it. It's missing the fuse box cover. There is no radio, but there is a set of Pioneer speakers in the rear.

This is definitely a nice project car. It is sold as is. Please remember this when bidding. I encourage you to come and take a look if you have the time.

Ford recalls 382k vehicles across six campaigns

Wed, Sep 30 2015

Ford needs to repair a total of 381,633 vehicles in North America across six newly announced campaigns, including five safety recalls and one compliance recall. By far the largest of these campaigns covers the 342,271 examples of the 1998-2003 Windstar to double check an earlier recall repair. Among these, 283,413 are in the US and 58,858 are in Canada. The combination of corrosion and stress can cause cracks in the rear axle and eventually lead to the part to snap completely. The company reports a small number of accidents might be connected to this, but there are no injuries. The minivans were recalled for this issue back in 2010, and it was investigated by NHTSA. According to Ford's latest announcement, the reinforcement brackets on some of these models might not have been installed correctly. This time, dealers will perform an inspection. Minivans with incorrectly installed brackets will get a new rear axle. The rest of the owners will be offered a deal to replace the part at a reduced cost. The next largest campaign covers 36,857 examples of the 2015 F-150 to fix a problem with the adaptive cruise control. Specifically, there are 33,481 affected trucks in the US, and 3,376 in Canada. According to Ford, "when passing a large, highly reflective truck" the radar in the system can misidentify a semi as being in the same lane as the pickup. The collision warning system would then activate, slowing the F-150. There's one report of an accident with this happening but no injuries. The fix is simply an update to the adaptive cruise control module software. Ford also has a recall for 1,477 examples of its 2016 F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis models, and they're all located in the US. A manufacturing issue might allow the trucks to shift into reverse without the driver first applying the brakes. There are no reports of any accidents from this, though. To repair the problem, the models get a new transmission shift control bracket and an adjustment to the shift cable. The Blue Oval's safety compliance recall covers 708 examples of the 2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, including 658 of them in the US, 28 in Canada, and 22 in Mexico. On these models, a manufacturing problem with the fuel tank could allow it to crack in a crash, which isn't allowed under federal rules. There are no reports of accidents, injuries or fires. The fix will be a new fuel tank for all of them. The company is also repairing 251 units of the 2015 Taurus and Lincoln MKS, plus the 2016 Explorer.

Junkyard Gem: 1993 Mercury Topaz GS Sedan

Sat, Aug 13 2022

As long as the Mercury brand existed — a period spanning the 1939 through 2011 model years — nearly every Mercury sold in the United States was more or less a redecorated Ford model. The Torino had its Montego sibling, the Crown Victoria had the Grand Marquis, the Cougar was based on everything from the Mustang to the Mondeo, and so on. Naturally, when the folks in Dearborn developed the Ford Tempo compact, a Mercury version had to be created. This was the Topaz, with the official launch of both cars taking place on the deck of the aircraft carrier often referred to as the USS Decrepit. You can't make this stuff up! The Tempo/Topaz, also known as the Tempaz, has largely faded from our collective automotive memory by now, since it broke no significant new engineering or styling ground (this story would be much different if Ford had only put the amazing straight-eight "T-Drive" Tempaz powertrain into production) and didn't have any endearing features other than being a cheap domestic competitor to the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra. Still, close to 3 million Tempazes left North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury showrooms during the 1984-1994 period. As you'd expect, most of these disposable cars disappeared from both the street and the car graveyard long ago. It takes a very special Tempaz for me to break out my camera while I'm patrolling my local wrecking yards; generally, this means an ultra-rare all-wheel-drive version or at least a very early model in super-clean condition. Today's Junkyard Gem is neither, but I took one look at this spectacular Bordello Red crypto-velour-and-slippery-plastic interior and recognized that this was no ordinary junkyard Mercury. It appears that Mercury had dropped the idea of clever names for base-grade seat fabrics by the time of the Topaz, referring to this stuff as just "cloth" in all the brochures I could find. That's too bad, because Mercurys had cool names for upholstery (e.g., Chromatex) in the old days. The interior is in very good condition but the steering wheel shows substantial wear, so I think this is a high-mile Topaz that got meticulous care from its owner or owners. Ford used five-digit odometers on these cars until the end of production, however, so we'll never know if this reading indicates 65,404 miles or 365,404 miles. The body is very straight, but there's some nasty corrosion behind the right front wheelwell.

Jill Wagner retired as Mercury spokeswoman

Wed, 17 Nov 2010

Jill Wagner has officially given up her crown as the queen of Mercury. With the Ford middle child on its way to the scrap heap, Wagner no longer has any automotive hardware to promote. Given her varied talents, we wouldn't be surprised to see her pick up where she left off with another automaker.
And here you thought you'd never be upset about Mercury's passing.
Thanks for the tip, Gregg!
