I have had this car personally for 15 years. My father owned it for ten years prior to then. So I can attest to the condition the car was kept in the past 25 years. Until restoration around 15 years ago It was stored in a garage and kept dry. The rust on this car was minimal when we bought it, it needed only floor pans on the drivers side. The underside was completed on a rotisserie at our family owned and operated body shop (we have more than 35 years experience in automotive repair and restoration). Floor pan replaced, entire body media blasted to inspect for straightness, minimal body work was needed. And I do mean minimal. All original glass, new weather stripping all around (in great shape), new head liner, trunk mat, carpet, rebuilt/re-cushioned/ recovered original seats. Gt grant steering wheel. Original shift knb (have grant knob to match). Older pioneer cd player hidden in dash piped to a 1000 watt UA (?) amp (im no car audio guru, but ill describe it as what you would want to hear when you step into a classic car and put on some rolling stones or bob dylan). Factory radio still sits in the dash, very pretty. New door panels made from scratch to match the seats using the factory arm rests. New dash pad. Original center console, kick panels, door jam plates. Original hub caps with new tires. New fuel tank. Extremely well maintained.
Original exquiptment not installed, but to go wtih car: Factory dash tach (needs refurb and is why i have a big ole tach on the dash at present, chrome rocker panel trims for each side, any thing misc that goes with it,. factory ignition points, I am fairly certain I had the original steering wheel.
non- original equptment installed on car at present: pertronix ignitor II which allows the igitnion system to see a full 12 volt. This provides a smoother idle, better throttle response, and I want to say a tad more power, but that was just from my opinion after installation, comparing before to after. Pertronix advertises better gas mileage, but I cannot substantiate that. What I will say is that it improved the drive-ability 10 fold. It also starts up much faster. Sound system (hidden as before mentioned). Steering wheel. Floor mats I had made that say CYCLONE on them. thick rubber ones over that.
Drive train: aside from the aforementioned ignition system, I am using very expensive plug wires (nascar quality at the time of the build roughly 13-14 years ago, I have the original air cleaner, but am using a slightly larger one atm, good paper element, original intake manifold, edelbrock performer carb (fairly sure, its a good carb tho, never have trouble from it ever), brand new water pump (just last year), chrome fan, original radiotor (and this thing has NEVER EVER EVER over heated, ever. yep its good) suspension recently serviced, and was completely rebuilt/replaced (where necessary) 13-14 years ago. brakes always maintained (drums rebuilt at time of restoration and i know serviced last year). internally the motor has a mild cam and a set of high flowing 302 heads ( I have the original heads for the motor and cam). You do not have to put led substitute in this car thanks to the 302 heads. The original heads are stock and have not been molested. The transmission is a 4spd manual, shifts great. The rear end is an 8in factory rear, rebuilt, and using factory 355 gears. Uses a custom exhaust, welded locally by my exhaust man and topped with glasspacks. It sounds old school mean. I built this car so that when I drove it and put on the mamas and papas everything about it sounded and felt 1965, the sound system the exhuast note. Until you see another car on the road, you can almost taste what it was like 48 years ago. Aside from that, the car drives much better than it would have new. The suspension was rebuilt with all quality components as was the motor, and I mean seals, etc, I used very very good materials. I will put anyone in touch with my father to hear the specifics on the motor as he did that for me at the time or restoration.
This car drives very strong, stops as good as a car with non powered drum brakes can (surprisingly well if using proper technique), rides smooth and feels planted in a curve. Now, this is not a corner carver by any means, but it is very fun to drive.
Body is in great shape, no rust (I mean that. In 25 years it hasn't seen rain. Its been uncovered and kept in a garage, started regularly (since restoration), driven gracefully, cared for and maintained. I only wash it maybe once a year and usually blow off the dust, clean the interior and then polish the paint with terry clothes and detail spray and it looks absolutely beautiful. Original chrome every where, so it must be polished quarterly through-out the year to maintain a brilliant shine.
You won't find many Cyclones in this kind of shape. At this point I feel more like preserver than an owner of this car. It is time that it passes to the next person, to be enjoyed, as I feel I must move on to another project.

Junkyard Gem: 1981 Mercury Cougar XR-7
Sun, May 24 2020The story of the Mercury Cougar involves more plot twists and unexpected digressions than that of just about any other Detroit car, with successive Cougar generations based on the Ford Mustang (1967-1973), the Ford Torino and/or Thunderbird (1974-1979), various Fox Fords including the Thunderbird (1980-1988), the MN12 Thunderbird/Lincoln Mark VIII (1989-1997), and the Ford Mondeo (1999-2002). There were wagon and sedan Cougars for brief periods, just to confuse everybody, and the rakish XR-7 Cougars sometimes lived on different platforms from their ordinary non-XR-7 counterparts. I think the Late Malaise Era Fox XR-7s are among the most interesting of the bunch, so I was quite excited to spot this tan-over-gold '81 in a Denver yard. I tried to count the number of screaming-cat badges on and in this car and gave up once I hit a dozen. The steering wheel, door panels, C pillars, center console, and — of course — the hood ornament all boast snarling felines. Earlier Cougars had emblems showing full side views of stalking catamounts, but the Cougar logo for the 1980s showed just the head. This car got the optional center console, which I hear is quite a rarity. You had to pay $174 extra (that's around $513 in 2020 dollars) for an AM/FM/cassette audio system in the '81 Cougar, but at least the air conditioning was standard equipment. Believe it or not, thieves used to steal these radios. Kumpf Lincoln-Mercury still exists in Englewood (as Landmark Lincoln), and the yard that now houses this car can be found just 15 miles up Broadway on the north side of Denver. The padded landau roof hasn't fared so well beneath the fierce Colorado sun, but overall this car seems very solid. Sadly, only the Mustangs and (once in a long while) Fairmonts get much love from the Fox Ford crowd these days. Three Mercury "wire wheel" hubcaps and one from a Lincoln. The base engine in the 1981 XR-7 was the "Thriftmaster" 200-cubic-inch (3.3-liter) straight-six, but very few XR-7 buyers would have refrained from checking the box for one of the two optional Windsor V8s. I can't tell if we're looking at the 255-cubic-inch (4.2-liter) version or the 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) one here, but real-world drivers might not have noticed the difference between the 120-horse 255 and the 130-horse 302, anyway. The non-XR-7 Fox Cougars had five-speed manual transmissions as base equipment (which nobody wanted), but all 1981 XR-7s had automatics.
Junkyard Gem: 1995 Mercury Tracer Trio
Sat, Feb 5 2022With the rise of Radwood, cars with exaggerated characteristics associated with the 1980s and 1990s are cool again. That means some combination of pastel and/or neon colors, squiggly squeezed-from-toothpaste-tube graphics, nonfunctional decklid spoilers, giant TURBO badging, and kicky youth-centric nomenclature are required if you want your wheels to be considered in compliance with the sacred tenets of Radism. I do my best to find rad machinery while crawling around in car graveyards, and since I came of driving age in 1982 I know a bit about the subject. Today's rare Junkyard Gem shows us the Mercury Division's belated attempt to sell fun cars to rad-leaning youngsters: a Tracer Trio, found in a Denver yard a few weeks back. The Trio package added 310 bucks to the cost of the $11,280 base Tracer sedan (that's about $575 on a $20,925 car in 2022 dollars), and it got the hip-and-trendy young buyer a leather-wrapped steering wheel, seven-spoke wheels, a decklid spoiler and these rad fender badges. I'm going to say that the much louder graphics and candy-cane-colored displacement badges on the Pontiac Sunbird W25 out-radded the Tracer Trio by a mile, but then Pontiac generally out-radded everyone in those days. Even Plymouth got into the act with such radness as the Breeze Expresso and Sundance Duster (we'll overlook the anti-rad Horizon Miser here). Perhaps tellingly, Mercury, Pontiac and Plymouth all got the "Old Yeller" treatment not long after the Rad Era ended. The Tracer name always went on Mercuries built on Mazda platforms, starting with the Australia-built, Ford Laser-based 1987-1989 cars and then continuing with Mexico-assembled, Ford Escort-based 1991-1996 cars. That generation of Escort/Tracer was mechanical twins with the Mazda Protege, itself the bridge between the 323 and the Mazda3. Some Tracers got the a 1.8-liter Mazda engine that was related to the Miata's engine, but this one has the pure-Detroit CVH 1.9. You're looking at 88 horsepower right here; the Mazda 1.8 offered 127 horses. At least the original buyer of this car got the base five-speed manual transmission instead of forking over $815 extra (about $1,510 today) for the four-speed slushbox. As a 29-year-old slacker living in San Francisco's Mission District and driving a hooptie '65 Chevy Impala sedan at the time, I would have taken the manual transmission without the Trio package, had I been forced to buy a new Tracer.
Ford announces free brake pad offer if customers stop by dealers
Mon, 04 Aug 2014These days, when you buy a new car, it's not unreasonable to expect a certain period of free maintenance to come along as well. Sometimes this is through the life of the warranty, in other cases a little less. But Ford Motor Company is going beyond those deals for at least one part of its cars. As of now, if you buy a set of Motorcraft brake pads for a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury model, you get free replacements for as long as you own the vehicle. The offer is good at Ford or Lincoln dealers and Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centers.
"We will replace the pads for as long as you own the vehicle," said Elizabeth Weigandt to Autoblog. She did clarify that the Motorcraft pads are generally for models from the '90s or newer. Also, to take advantage of this program, a person must return to the same dealer each time to get the free parts.
Of course, Ford isn't just handing out brake pads to anyone who walks by; there are certain stipulations. First, the components have to be worn down to less than three millimeters to be eligible, and the buyer still has to pay for the labor to install them. If the model is used as a fleet vehicle for commercial purposes like as a taxi or limousine, this offer also doesn't apply; the same thing for racecars. On the plus side, if you recently bought a set of pads from one of the participating locations, you're still in luck. The deal covers parts purchased as of July 1.
