Mercedes previews GLC crossover coupe concept for Shanghai
Fri, Apr 3 2015Say what you will about slant-backed crossover coupes: if the industry has learned anything from BMW and its X6, it's that they're popular... and profitable. Little wonder, then, that Mercedes followed suit with the release of the GLE Coupe. And now it appears set to follow the lead set by the BMW X4 as well with a smaller GLC Coupe... at least, that is, in concept form. Previewed in this latest teaser rendering is the Concept GLC Coupe, a design study which Mercedes is set to present at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month. The statement that accompanies it (which you can read below) doesn't tell us much, except to say that it is "near-production-standard" – which is to say that it stands a strong chance of reaching showrooms. As it is, the GLC with a conventional roofline is set to take the place of the GLK in Benz's expanding crossover lineup. The emergence of this concept ought to preview that new model's styling, regardless of how steeply its roofline tapers off towards the back. The Shanghai show is, incidentally, the same venue Mercedes originally floated the idea of its smallest crossover with the presentation of the Concept GLA two years ago. And as we all know, that subsequently entered production – in a form closely following that of the concept. So we wouldn't be surprised to see a GLC Coupe emerge in close proximity to its more conventional counterpart (maybe even before), heavily influenced by the show car we'll see later this month. Mercedes A-Class next up for facelift
Sun, Jan 11 2015This is the coming Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and in case the paucity of camouflage didn't make it clear, it won't look much different the one that's been on sale for all of two years. Caught in Sweden braving the temperatures, its exterior updates aren't expected to go much further than a reworked face that brings it in line with the recently updated B-Class, including a new grille, headlights and taillights, and bumpers. The cabin is where most of the work is being done, to give it a better punch against the BMW 1 Series. A tweaked dash cluster, better fabrics and materials, the eight-inch tablet-style nav/multimedia screen, and ambient lighting should join the party. The updated range of B-Class engines should also make the jump into the A. A photo caught at a dealer meeting in Barcelona last year makes us pretty sure it will be introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year. Until then, there are spy shots to peruse.
Mercedes-AMG GT attacks Circuit of the Americas
Fri, 12 Sep 2014Mercedes-Benz is having a banner year with its Formula One team. Through 2014, the constructor has 454 championship points; ahead of its nearest competitor (Red Bull-Renault) by a margin of 182 tally marks. We're sure they can almost taste the champagne.
It's fitting then, and a little big cocky in a good way, that Mercedes has released a video of its newest sports car at an F1 venue. In this case, the car is the lovely Mercedes-AMG GT S, and the racetrack is Austin's Circuit of the Americas.
Having seen the official photo set and scratched the surface of the technical specifications earlier this week, we're excited to finally hear the thing run. As you might guess, the deployment of 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque from the twin-turbo V8 is a motivating experience. Crank up your volume, and hit that play button. (Oh, and Mercedes shot the thing in 4K, too, so those of you with expensive televisions/monitors should take heed to the settings.)
