2000 Mercedes SLK230 Designo roadster. This is a gorgeous limited production model, consisting of a special metallic copper exterior and a matching copper and black leather interior. This car has always been garaged, it shows. Mileage is 110,990, and the car has a clean NYS title. I paid cash for the car 3 years ago, mileage at time of purchase was 103,000. I took meticulous car of the car, stored it inside year round and never even drove it in the rain. Averaged only 2,500 miles a summer.

The paint looks incredible, tons of depth and shift depending on lighting. The car was professionally buffed when I purchased it three years ago, the paint looks basically new. People constantly approach me in parking lots asking about the car. I've had people even take pictures of the car. They're shocked when I tell them the paint is original.

Mechanically the car runs perfectly. Lots of power, tight suspension, silent exhaust. I replaced the problematic factory K20 fuel pump relay circuit board with a brand new unit at the beginning of the summer. The car needs nothing mechanically, turn the key and go. The power top works great. I am however including a free full set of new KYB struts/shocks with the sale, just for routine maintenance purposes. The ambient air temperature sensor sometimes jumps around on a hot summer day, so I am including a free sensor with the sale as well. .

The interior shows some normal wear from age and mileage. I provided detailed pictures of every sign of wear. The driver's seat has some slight cracking and the seam under the driver's left shoulder has seperated slightly. The passenger seat looks very nice. The left door panel has a little nick in the armrest, the right door panel has a small puncture in the speaker grill. The center console is in nice shape with just a few small peels. In comparison to most it looks great, I've seen many SLK's where the center console looks tattered and peeled to death. The center console and glove box door show a few scratches and abrasions. This is all normal wear and tear, I'm just providing an extremely detailed description for you. If I buy a car online, I expect this type of attention to detail. The only real issue that'd I'd address is the steering wheel. It is heavily discolored and worn. Not sure if this was a factory defect on the Designo cars, as the wear is all on the orange leather on the top half of the steering wheel. When I purchased the car I considered getting the wheel rewrapped, or swapping in a used factory all black steering wheel. I decided to leave it alone though and just live with it. I'm a automotive professional, 8 years selling parts and cars. 100% positive feedback, I'm a trustworthy and honest seller.

The exterior is in very nice condition. The front and rear bumper covers have very minor normal scuffs and rock chips, normal. The hood has one minor rock chip above the grill that was filled in with a touch up stick. The touch up stick is in the glove box. What looks like damage to the hood closer to the windshield is just cloud reflection from the sky. The fenders, doors, and rear quarters are in great shape. The retractable roof has a minor ding. The decklid is in great shape. The folding mirrors are in good shape, although both have some minor clearcoat fading/wear. The only wheels that come with the car will be the factory 16" aluminum rims. They are in great condition and have a matching set of Michelin Pilot tires with between 50-75% tread.

I paid top dollar for the Giovanna 19" chrome wheels new when I purchased the SLK. The front Cooper tires have 7,000 miles on them, the rear Bridgestone's are two different run-flat models, and have roughly  25% tread left. I am asking $600 for the full set. If you win the auction you can purchase these seperately, if you aren't interested I will sell them in a seperate auction on Ebay subsequently.

Payment must be made within 5 days. A $250 non-refundable Paypal deposit is due immediately at the end of the auction. I only accept certified bank checks and cash. The car will be held until the funds clear. I can assist in loading the car on a hauler, I live a block away from a massive parking lot that a big rig can turn around in.

Man makes record-setting drive across the US in 28 hours, 50 minutes

Fri, 01 Nov 2013

Records, as the say, are made to be broken. Whether that's cramming the most hot dogs down your gullet, running a faster mile, or yes, driving across the United States, odds are that there's someone out there wants to eat more, run faster or drive harder. Speaking of that last example, the record for driving from a set location on the east coast, in particular the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, has been one that has fascinated gearheads since a guy named Cannonball Baker made the trek from New York to LA in 53 hours, 30 minutes, in 1933.
The competition saw its glory days when Car and Driver's Brock Yates came up with the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (more affectionately known as the Cannonball Run), although the record was most recently set by Alex Roy and his 32-hour, seven-minute trek behind the wheel of a BMW M5 in 2006. Now, there's a new champion, who made the trip from east to west in a scarcely imaginable 28 hours and 50 minutes, behind the wheel of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. That's works out to an average speed of 98 miles per hour over the course of 2,813.7 miles.
His name is Ed Bolian, and Jalopnik has a writeup of the epic voyage that details everything from the history of the Cannonball Run to Bolian's preparation and trouble finding co-drivers, to the trip itself. It is well worth a read.

Does Alex Rodriguez' Mercedes dealership have a PR problem?

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Alex Rodriguez, in case you haven't heard, is seemingly the new Most Hated Man In Baseball, ostensibly replacing commissioner Bud Selig (for now). Rodriguez was slammed with a 211-game suspension due to his role in the MLB's latest steroid scandal in which "A-Roid," as fans have taken to calling the former superstar, was cited with steroid use and attempts to hide his involvement by "engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate" the investigation, according to the MLB's official report.
Why is this on a car site, then? Because Rodriguez' name is attached Alex Rodriguez Mercedes-Benz in League City, TX. An Ad Age report cites Mercedes-Benz USA in saying that A-Rod owns "about half'" of the dealership. Mercedes, for what it's worth, isn't going to any to any lengths to distance itself from its dealership or its controversial namesake, saying, "We never promoted the fact that A-Rod owned a dealership, so there's really nothing to 'distance' ourselves from. And since his activity is not illegal but rather prohibited by MLB, there's nothing actionable here."
With the scandal still a fresh piece of news and A-Rod's pending appeal, it's difficult to tell what sort of effect, if any, his name will have on the dealership's sales. Ad Age contacted the GM of Alex Rodriguez Mercedes-Benz to get the dealership's view, but no calls were returned. According to Mercedes, any name change is up to Rodriguez and his partner(s) at the dealership. Somehow, though, we think A-Rod has other things to worry about beyond his dealership's name.

New Die Hard movie wrecked 132 cars in $11 million chase scene [w/video]

Sat, 16 Feb 2013

It would seem the act of dying hard brings with it lots of wanton destruction of the four-wheeled kind. According to John Moore, director of A Good Day To Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis, There were 132 (cars) that could never be used again. Another 518 required a lot of work. And damn right there were some good cars there... That's the fun of it."
Please join us in one great big collective sigh. Done? Okay, let's continue.
"With Die Hard it's about how audacious the action is," says Moore. "So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I'm a car fanatic." Yeah. Sounds like it hurt really bad... though not as bad as the final tally after all the carnage had been counted: "Someone showed me the numbers on the car chase and soup to nuts, you put it all together it was like an $11 million sequence."
