For sale is a beautiful 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL Roadster. Considered the most favorable of color combinations, its the original BLACK paint exterior with TAN interior and ALL the CHROME bells and whistles!  I purchased this 8 years ago as a milestone birthday present to myself.  Since then, this Mercedes has lived a papered life in the garage and driven sparingly (only appx 1000 miles per year) since.  Circumstances change, and its time for me to use a more sensible car so sadly I will have to part with it.  This beauty needs a new home & owner who will cherish her as she so deserves.

I have little or no experience selling classic cars, but I've described everything to the best of my knowledge and have included over 45 images. Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I will try my best to answer them.  All sales final.

One really special thing about this gorgeous automobile is the large amount of original documentation that come with it: original manual, service book, warranty book, original instruction cards, all to fit in the original plastic organizer with pocket for registration paperwork!

EXTERIOR
ACCIDENT FREE! The body on the car is in almost pristine condition and was extremely well maintained. I believe that the paint is original and is finished in the gorgeous black with gold pinstripe.  There are a few light scratches to the paint & very minor dings to the door from the parking lot, but nothing distracting or unusual for it's age. There's also about a thumbprint 2” square “dimpling” of the paint on the right front fender near the chrome side trim (see photo) and I'm not sure what that is.   The car is riding on upgraded Mercedes 15" chrome wheels with gold-tone emblem. All chrome trim, glass, and rubber seals are in great shape. The windshield is like new with no chips. The soft top is like new and in excellent condition, and has almost never been up. It certainly has never been up since I've had it in the last 8 years and have taken it out only this once immediately prior to this photo shoot.  Its a secure, tight fit so the wrinkles will disappear shortly after use.  The hard top has good seals and the headliner is in great shape. Overall, I think that the exterior appearance of this car is a 9 out of 10.

INTERIOR
The interior is in great shape all around. The supple original Palomino leather seats are all in very good condition and look very nice with no rips or tears, which shows the quality of leather used in this car. The dashboard is in excellent condition - no cracks or fading. The carpets are all very nice are not worn or damaged. OEM carpeted car mats are dark brown color and in very good condition. All dials and controls function as they should, power windows and clock is fully functional. The driver's side visor middle clip needs replacing.  The original sound system was replaced with a CD/MP3 player and I added 2 tweeters up front and 2 bass speakers in the back.  Music is crisp and clear and not overwhelming. This sound system definitely adds to the driving experience of this roadster.  The trunk compartment is very clean. The spare tire compartment is clean it has the original wheel (but no tire)  Also the original top removal tools and OEM First Aid Kit and it's mounting bracket are included. Overall, I think the interior appearance of this car is also a 9 out of 10.

MECHANICAL
Mechanically, this SL runs GREAT! The car starts right up and shifts smooth as silk. It drives as good now as the day it rolled of the lot. The V8 engine is surprisingly quick and responsive. It is reliable, easy to fix, and parts are readily available. Just last month, she passed her California smog inspection with flying colors.
A/C had worked when we left southern California, but I just turned it on and although it is blowing quite well, its not blowing very cold.  I suspect that it will need a freon charge.  About a year ago, one of the dash warning lights continued to stay on.  I believe it is the "a light is out" warning light. It was not turned off when one of the interior lights burnt out  & fixed and I understand that this is a very labor-intensive, get-behind-the-dash type of fix, so I've been living with it. It absolutely does NOT have any affect on the electrical or mechanical running of the car .  But to be on the safe side, I had this checked by a local European motors speciality mechanic and who confirms that all is well. I will include all repairs and or maintenance receipts.

Don't miss your chance to own a truly spectacular, California Classic 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560sl...

Mercedes surprised Hamilton with this steering wheel message

Tue, Nov 25 2014

Lewis Hamilton had much to celebrate at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this past weekend. Not only did he win the race in commanding form (the 33rd in his career to make him the fifth most successful in Formula One history), but he also scored enough points (double on the season finale this year) to outpace his teammate and chief rival to win the world championship. Having already been crowned champion in 2008, that makes him one of only sixteen drivers to have won multiple world titles. It's a point his team at Mercedes didn't want him to miss, so on the cool-down lap at the end of the race, his pit crew radioed him the message "default 44" – an instruction that triggered this image to appear on the display in the middle of his steering wheel. Apparently Lewis, with plenty else on his mind (like getting his car back to the parc ferme in one piece and with enough fuel), didn't notice what was flashing in front of him. Superimposed, as you can see, over an image of Hamilton as a young lad still in karts is Lewis' name alongside those of the other two-time world champs: Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Emerson Fittipaldi, Alberto Ascari, Fernando Alonso and Mika Hakkinen. (Never mind those who've scored more than two titles.) Intriguingly, Hakkinen is the only other one among them to have won either of his titles under Mercedes power like Lewis did, though Fangio won two of his five titles motivated by Benz engines.

2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe

Wed, Dec 17 2014

Conventional wisdom would dictate that adding more power and several key performance enhancements to an already very good car, like the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Coupe, will end up equaling an even better car. In the case of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe, conventional wisdom sort of applies, but perhaps not as much as we'd have initially guessed. We'll get into the nitty gritty details in just a moment, but here's the most immediate takeaway we had in our minds as we walked away from this super coupe: The S63 AMG is excellent, but so is the slightly more mundane S550 Coupe on which it is based, and which is priced some $41,000 less expensive than its more powerful sibling. Chew on those figures while we examine what differentiates the two S-Class Coupes. Drive Notes As expected, the single greatest highlight of the 2015 S63 Coupe is its engine. As a powerplant, it's a gem. As a hand-built engineering exercise, its 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque are just as impressive in real life as they sound when recited from stat sheets. Not that the old CL63 AMG was lacking in power, but the new S63 AMG Coupe boasts 41 more horses and 74 more lb-ft than the outgoing engine. The run to 60 miles per hour takes a scant 3.9 seconds, according to M-B, aided in no small part by the car's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and other assorted electronic brains deciding where, exactly, all those ponies should be sent. The rear-biased system is tuned to send two-thirds of the engine's power to the rear wheels in a bid to make the car feel more like what performance-minded drivers expect. Top speed is electronically limited to 186 miles per hour, which is plenty fast enough, even in the days of 200-plus-mph sedans from M-B's former corporate cousin Dodge. We didn't get anywhere near the car's maximum velocity, but our brief trips into triple-digit territory were quiet, comfortable and completely free of drama. The seven-speed automatic gearbox responds quickly to requests of your right foot, but the steering wheel-mounted paddles don't change gears as quickly as we'd like when in Manual mode. Controlled Efficiency (which we'd call Comfort) maximizes efficiency, keeping the transmission in higher gears and shifting earlier than when in Sport mode, and we didn't find much fault with the computer's shifting algorithms in either setting.

8 cars we're most looking forward to driving in 2015

Mon, Jan 5 2015

Now that 2014 is officially in the books, it's time to look ahead. And following our list of the cars we liked best last year, we're now setting our sights at the hot new metal that's coming our way in 2015. Some of these, we've already seen. And some are still set to debut during the 2015 auto show season. But these are the machines that keep us going – the things on the horizon that we're particularly stoked to drive, and drive hard. Jeep Renegade Not the Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Not the Ford Mustang GT350. Not the new John Cooper Works Mini. Nope, I'm looking forward to the adorable, trail-rated Jeep Renegade. And that's because I really, really, really like our long-term Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I do not, however, care too much for the Cherokee's looks, and I really don't like its $38,059 price tag. The Renegade Trailhawk, meanwhile, promises much of the same rough-and-tumble character as its big brother, but at what we expect will be a more reasonable price (I'm personally wagering on the baby Jeep's off-road model starting at no more than $23,000). With a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a nine-speed automatic, it should also be a bit easier to fill than the V6-powered Cherokee. Also, I can't help but love the way the Renegade looks. It's like someone took a Wrangler, squished it by 50 percent and then handed it off to George Clinton for a healthy dose of funk. The interior, with its bright, expressive trims and color schemes should also be a really nice place to spend some time. I'll be attending the Renegade's launch later this month, so I'll have a much shorter wait than my colleagues. Here's hoping the baby Jeep lives up to my expectations. – Brandon Turkus Associate Editor Mazda MX-5 Miata Here's an uncomfortable truth: I'd rather spend a day driving a properly sorted Mazda MX-5 Miata of any generation on a winding road than I would nearly any other vehicle, regardless of power, price or prestige. It's not just that I prize top-down driving and enjoy the Miata's small size because it gives me more road to play with. I just find there's more motoring joy to be had with high-fidelity handling and an uncorrupted car-to-driver communication loop than I do with face-distorting power or grip – let alone valet-stand gravitas. But perhaps most of all, I love Miatas because they can deliver that level of feedback and driver reward at modest speeds that won't put the locals on edge or endanger lives – you can use more of the car more of the time.
