Audi RS3 Sedan coming to America with over 400 hp?
Wed, Feb 17 2016The Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG is a fast, competent car. It's significantly sharper than the Audi S3, and it should be, since its starting price is around $7,000 more. Still, getting walloped by the higher-performing CLA45 AMG must irk some people at Audi, we'd think, which might explain why there are rumors that the S3's big brother is coming to town. Yes, reports are popping up from an Audi of America employee that the Audi RS3 would transition from its Euro-market Sportback body style to a more conventional four-door, and that its styling would be updated in the process. Oh, and it'll have a 400-plus-horsepower, 2.5-liter, five-cylinder turbo with which to bash the four-cylinder AMG. The report comes from Quattro World by way of CarScoops, and goes on to claim that Audi hallmarks like Quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission will both be present. The new RS3 Sedan would arrive on US shores in 2017 as a 2018 model, with prices starting between $55,000 and $60,000. That should make Mercedes-AMG very nervous – the CLA45 may start around $50,000, but getting it past the $60,000-range is simple (your author was driving a nearly $68,000 CLA45 just last month, for example). Naturally, we have a call in with Audi of America to see if there's any credence to this report. Stay tuned for updates. Related Video:
Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E-Class V8 Supercar completes the field [w/videos]
Sat, 23 Feb 2013Ford, Holden and Nissan introduced their V8 Supercar challengers a while back. Erebus Motorport, whose racing program got the green light not even 120 days ago, has finally shown off the Mercedes-Benz E-Class racer that will complete this year's field of entries. The first AMG race car ever to be built outside of Germany, it's an Australian-built tube-frame chassis specced to the series' Car of Tomorrow rules, fitted with body panels that channel the E63 AMG.
Supported by AMG Customer Motorsport, the 5.0-liter engine is provided by HWA in Germany, the racing arm of AMG. Regulations dictate that it have roughly 650 horsepower, a redline between 7,000 and 7,500 rpm and a torque curve that matches the parity baseline set for all cars.
Lee Holdsworth, Tim Slade and Maro Engel will drive the three team cars, each with different sponsors. Their first showing will be at the Clipsal 500 on March 3 in Adelaide, here in the US we'll get to see them in May at the Circuit of the Americas. Check out the videos below of the Erebus car starting up at its launch, and footage of all of this year's cars doing pre-season testing on track together.
Petrolicious relives history with Stirling Moss and his Mercedes SLR
Wed, May 13 2015We take it as a given that lap records will keep getting beaten. That's just the way things work: the development of racing cars proceeds at breakneck speeds, dwindling lap times down over the ages. Not at the Mille Miglia, though. The legendary Sir Stirling Moss won the famous Italian race together with journalist Denis Jenkinson in 1955, recording an almost unfathomable average speed of nearly 98 miles per hour in the Mercedes 300 SLR bearing the number 722 – the inspiration behind the extreme SLR McLaren Stirling Moss edition speedster that debuted seven years ago. Nobody (not even Moss himself) managed to beat that time in the subsequent two years before the race was shut down for good. It was only revived decades later as an historic rally that's more about consistency and, by its nature, doesn't put that record in contention. This year's event is coming up soon, so the cinematographical artisans at Petrolicious caught up with Moss and that legendary SLR – perfectly preserved as it has been by Mercedes – for a drive down memory lane.
