Up for sale is a beautiful very low mileage 97 Mercedes SL500 Hardtop convertible with clean carfax report. This car is in exceptionally good condition mechanically as well as cosmetically.

Drivetrain:

Engine is in excellent condition with extreme amounts of torque throughout the rev band. It purrs like a kitten with no ticks or unwanted sounds etc. No check engine or any other warning lights on the dashboard. Cooling system has many new components such as waterpump and hoses etc. Cars was recently driven from St. Louis to Cleveland. Gets very respectible 26+ mpg on the highway. This car comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission which shifts great without any hesitation throughout all the gears. 97 is one of the best years to own an SL500 because of a rare option of the DOHC 32V engine combined with a very crisp 5-speed auto. Starting in 99, engine was changed to a SOHC with 3 valves per cylinder which is not as much fun as the DOHC engine.

Body:

This car comes with a hardtop as well as the retractable soft top. The hydraulic system that operates the soft top of the SL (R129 chasis number for this car) is complicated and is proned to breakdown and leaks. This will not be a concern with this car since almost all of the hydraulic system has been rebuilt with modern 21st century nitrile seals. These seals are much superior to the OEM seals that have a flawed design and usually start to leak after 10 years. From the factory, the total soft top operation should take about 18 secs and that is how long it takes for the soft top to retract on this car. The soft top operation system will not give you any issues for many years to come. The soft top on the vehicle is BRAND NEW and it looks very sharp with crystal clear windows. You don't have to be concerned about cracked or faded windows with this brand new top. The hard top is also in very great shape. With the hard top on the vehicle it is hard to tell if you are traveling in a convertible, this car can be used year around without any concerns because of the hard top. Body does have minor scratches which are to be expected for a used car. This car has XENON HID headlights.

Suspension:

Suspension on the car is in perfect condition. It provides the confortable ride that is expected of the flagship Mercedes model. Even though this car has over 300 horsepower engine, it is so comfortable that you really don't feel like driving fast too often. It is funny that I don't mind driving back home from work on this car at all as it feels like I am already home after getting in the car.

Brakes:

The brake cylinder and the booster have been recently replaced. All the encompassing systems such as ASR and ABS work perfectly.

Tires & Wheels:

Wheels are in excellent shape with no obvious curb rash etc. Of course car comes with brand new shoes. It has a complete set of brand new tires on all corners (less then 1K miles) and a brand new full size tire and the same wheel that you see on the car.

Other:

The instrument cluster lights have been upgraded to soft white LED lights which look very nice! The antenna has been rebuilt with a new mast installed. Car has a CD changer. The car has just been fully detailed and interior feels like it belongs in a brand new Mercedes. Did I mention that the soft top roof system has been rebuilt and this is a major cause of concern when purchasing Mercedes convertibles 10 years or older because they often don't work properly and the cost to have it repaired can run upwards of $5,000 at a non-dealer facility. Also included is a Hardtop lifting/storing solution which makes the hard top removal a ONE person 10 minute job and it stores the hardtop up in the air away from being dinged, scratched and damage and doesn't take up a lot of space in your garage.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I have plenty of more pictures of outside, inside, wheels. I can even take more pictures of any part of the body that you might be interested in. The car is priced to move and is right at book value for this car with these low miles. You can schedule to come see and test drive the car if you are in Cleveland or are close by. Mercedes Unimog poised for Canadian return

Sun, Jun 28 2015

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog, the super-duper heavy-duty off-road workhorse vehicle that the German automaker has been making for more than 60 years, may soon be sold in Canada once again after a hiatus. Regulators had taken issue with both their emissions (super torquey diesel engines don't tend to run real clean) and the fact that some folks would take them out on city streets and even highways (these beasts have a top speed of about 25 miles per hour). Now, regulatory officials are considering allowing the Unimog to be sold in Canada again, albeit under strictly off-road driving regulations, Canada's Driving says. In fact, the diesel trucks apparently run a lot cleaner than they used to, while the torque levels remain off the charts. Naturally, some folks are clamoring for them because of their ability to run on just about any terrain. Hans Mross of Vancouver-based Mross Import Service Ltd., which previously imported the Unimog to Canada, told Autoblog he was "99 percent sure" the Unimog would be brought back to Canada. We'd last reported on the Unimog in April 2013, when Mercedes-Benz said it would start selling 10 different versions of the truck. Lewis Hamilton owns 15 cars, uses tow trucks to keep the mileage low

Thu, Aug 2 2018

No matter how you feel about Lewis Hamilton off the track, it's impossible not to respect his talent behind the wheel. Currently, Hamilton is the second most successful Formula One driver of all time. His 67 wins and four championships place him only behind Michael Schumacher's 91 wins and seven championships. With all those winnings, Hamilton has racked up a decent personal fortune, much of which he uses to buy cars. Except he doesn't drive them quite as much as you might think. According to The Sunday Times, Hamilton's net worth of just over $207 million makes him one of the richest sports figures in the UK, just behind David Beckham. In a recent interview with the British newspaper, Hamilton gave some details on his personal car collection. His first car was a used Mini Cooper, soon followed by a Mercedes-Benz C200. Both have long since been replaced by a pair of original Shelby Cobras, a 1967 Shelby GT500, a Ferrari 599 SA Aperta, two LaFerraris (a red coupe and a white Aperta), a McLaren P1 and a Pagani Zonda 760 equipped with a manual transmission. All in, Hamilton has about 15 cars split between homes in Monaco and Los Angeles. Unsurprisingly, he has a Mercedes-AMG Project One ( a car that shares more than a little with his F1 W09 EQ Power+ race car) on the way. Hamilton has some hot takes on his personal collection. "The Zonda is terrible to drive," he said. "It's the best-sounding car I own, but handling-wise it's the worst. I got it in manual because I didn't like the tiptronic version. The tiptronic Pagani offered was worse than the Smart Roadster I had." He also says his Shelby Mustang is a "beautiful car, but a heap of junk." In order to keep the miles down (and valuations up), Hamilton apparently has a tow truck on retainer in Los Angeles. When he's finished driving one of his Ferraris, he'll have the car towed back to his place. Classic cars are becoming a solid and serious investment, and Hamilton doesn't want to squander his wealth like some other athletes. That said, there are a couple more cars Hamilton would love to own, including a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (the one with the gullwing doors) and a Ferrari 250GT California Spyder (the one from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"). Fastest cars in the world by top speed, 0-60 and quarter mile

Tue, Feb 13 2024

A claim for the title of “Fastest Car in the World” might seem easy to settle. ItÂ’s actually anything but: Are we talking production cars, race cars or customized monsters? And what does “fastest” even mean? For years, car publications have tended to define “fastest” in terms of an unbeatable top speed. ThatÂ’s distinct from the “quickest” car in a Usain Bolt-style dash from the starting blocks, as with the familiar 0-60 mph metric. Professionals often focus on track lap times or elapsed time-to-distance, as with a drag racer thatÂ’s first to trip the beam of light at the end of a quarter-mile; or the 1,000-foot trip of nitromethane-powered NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car dragsters. Something tells us, however, that you're not seeking out an answer of "Brittany Force rewriting the NHRA record books with a 3.659-second pass at a boggling 338.17 mph." For most barroom speed arguments, the focus is firmly on cars you can buy in showrooms, even if many are beyond the financial means of all but the wealthiest buyers and collectors. Here are some of the enduring sources of speed claims, counter-claims, tall tales and taunting dismissals that are the lifeblood of car enthusiasts – now with EVs adding an unexpected twist to these passionate pursuits.   Fastest from the blocks: 0-60 mph Thirty years ago, any car that could clock 60 mph in five seconds or less was considered extremely quick. Today, high-performance, gasoline-powered sedans and SUVs are routinely breaking below 4 seconds. As of today, the 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 crushes all with a 0-60 mph time of just 1.66 seconds. That's simply absurd, but keep in mind the Demon was engineered with the single-minded purpose of going fast in a straight line. It's also important to realize that direct comparisons are difficult, because not all of these times were accomplished with similar conditions (prepped surfaces, adjustments for elevation and so on). The moral here is to take these times with a tiny grain of salt. After the Dodge, the Rimac Nevera comes in with an officially recorded 0-60 mph time of just 1.74 seconds. EVs crowd the quickest list, with the Pininfarina Battista coming in a few hundredths slower (1.79 seconds) than the Nevera and the Lucid Air sapphire (1.89 seconds) right after that. Eventually, you arrive to the Tesla Model S Plaid, which has a claimed 1.99-second 0-60 mph time, though instrumented testing by Car and Driver shows it accomplishes the deed in 2.1 seconds.
