HISTORY:
This Mercedes-Benz SL320 was purchased at the local Higginbotham Mercedes-Benz dealer in Jackson, Ms. on 6-1-95. Reported to be used by wife as her vehicle. It was serviced at this dealership unit it was sold to individual in Louisville, Ms on 12-9-05. It was then serviced at Bullock Toyota, Louisville, Ms. The car was then traded back to the original Mercedes-Benz dealer (Higginbotham Automobiles LLC.) that it was purchased from.
I purchased this vehicle from Higginbotham thru the Manheim Auction under Auto Locators that is owned by son. I was looking for a special retirement auto for my wife and I. We are both in our late 70's. We were advised by dealership that the soft top control switch module had shorted out and top would not work. When they put another one in, it shortage out immediately again. They were selling the car "as is". I used two retired Mercedes-Benz mechanics who are brothers who worked for the MB dealership in Fl. for over 25 years to inspect the vehicle prior to purchase to came up with an estimate to put the car is a 100% mechanical condition. On their recommendation, I purchased the vehicle.
The following repairs were made to this 1995 320 SL MB: THEY WERE INSTRUCTED TO KEEP RECORD OF THE REPAIRS IN A NOTEBOOK FORM TO INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: ( A) Receipts of purchases of the parts, (B) name of those parts, (C) Part number and where part was purchased from, (D) photos of parts being installed, (E) Diagrams as to where these parts fit in the vehicle. (F) Price. (This is a practice on all vehicles I own when any type of repair record is established)
(BY GIVING YOU ALL OF THE ABOVE INFORMATION YOU HAVE ALL OF THE INFORMATION AS TO PARTS, NUMBERS, PROOF OF WORK, ETC. I NOTED THAT SEVERAL OF THE SL'S FOR SALE ON EBAY THAT INDICATED SUCH REPAIR WORK HAD TAKEN PLACE ON THEIR VEHICLE. HERE VERIFICATION IS ESTABLISHED. WHEN I STARTED THIS PROJECT, I HAD NO PLANS TO SELL THIS VEHICLE. WILL EXPLAIN LATER.)
IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A SHORTAGE WAS THE PROBLEM IN THE ELECTRONICS SYSTEM THAT CONTROLS THE SOFT CONVERTIBLE TOP. THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE TO ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM THAT WAS CAUSING THE SHORTAGE WAS TO ELIMINATE ALL OF THE CURRENT ELECTRIC SYSTEM. THIS IS WHAT WE DID BY INSTALLING ALL NEW WINDOW SWITCHES BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT, WINDOW MOTORS, BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT, THE TOP CONTROL SWITCH FOR THE SOFT CONVERTIBLE TOP, AND THE SOFT TOP MODULE PN# 1298203226, AND ALL ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS.
THIS ALLOWED THE SOFT TOP TO OPERATE AND ALLOWED US TO CHECK THE TWELVE HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS THAT OPERATES THE SOFT TOP. THOSE THAT NEEDED WERE REPLACED EITHER WITH NEW OR REMANFACTURED CYLINDERS. RECORDS ARE INCLUDED OF THESE REPLACEMENTS. SINCE REWORKING OF THESE CYLINDERS AND MODULES, TEST HAVE BEEN RUN ON THEM OVER AND OVER AND ALL HAVE FUNCTIONED AS THEY SHOULD.
HAVING EXPERIENCED PAST TROUBLE WITH WATER PUMPS ON THESE MODELS, WE HAD A NEW WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT AND CAP REPLACED ($644.00). ALSO , SPARK PLUGS FUEL HOSE, and GAS FILTER. THE CAR ALSO COMES WITH A HARD TOP THAT ALSO REFLECTS THE SAME PERFECT PAINT AND BODY THAT THE REST OF THE CAR DOES. THE CAR ALSO COMES WITH A WIND SCREEN.
NOW FOR THE REASON THIS CAR IS FOR SALE. ON 5-11-13 AFTER A USM BASEBALL GAME MY WIFE AND I DECEIDED TO TAKE A RIDE IN THE MB TO A LOCAL RESTAURANT. HAVING PARKED IN A CLOSE AREA NEXT TO ANOTHER CAR,, MY WIFE, AFTER THE MEAL, ATTEMPTED TO ENTER THE CAR FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE. SHE TRIPPED CAUSING HER TO FALL BACKWARDS WITH ALL OF HER WEIGHT AGAINST HER RIGHT LEG CAUSING HER TO FRACTURE HER RIGHT FEMUR ABOVE HER KNEE. SHE HAS SPENT SEVEN WEEKS IN HOSPITAL AND HAS SOME 2 MONTHS OF HOME REHAB FACEING HER. SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BEND DOWN TO ENTER THE SL WITH THE RODS AND PLATE IN LEG. I HAVE ORDERS TO GET RID OF THE *&%@%% CAR... MY LOSSE WILL BE SOMEONES GAIN. ONLY LOOKING TO COVER MY COST OF CAR AND REPAIRS. HOWEVER, YOU HAVE A CAR THAT IS ABOUT AS NEAR PERFECT AS YOU CAN HAVE A CAR OF ITS AGE.
THIS VEHICLE WILL NOT LOSE ITS VALUE BUT WILL CONTINUE TO GROW IF THE SAME CARE THAT IT HAS RECEIVED WILL CONTINUE.. I HAVE PROVIDED AS MUCH INFORMATION AS I KNOW AND AS ACCURATELY AS I KNOW HOW. WE CAN MEET YOU AT ANY OF THE NEAR BY AIR PORTS WITH CAR AND PAPERS. THESE AIRPORTS ARE ABOUT THE SAME DISTANCE FROM HATTIESBURG, MISS. THEY ARE JACKSON, MS., BILOXI, MS., NEW ORLEANS, LA. AND MOBILE, AL. CALL PAUL RIMES, 601-268-0293(H) 601-606-7028(C) FOR ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

Mercedes working on new inline-six engines
Mon, 11 Nov 2013Mercedes-Benz will make a return to the inline-six-cylinder engine game, according to a report from the UK's AutoCar. It's not clear what's prompting the phasing out of the current array of V6s.
We'll see the first inline-six from Mercedes in next-generation E-Class, set to debut in 2016. Following that, it'll arrive as part of a mid-cycle refresh for the C-Class in 2017. What's particularly special about the new inline-six is its modular nature, which will allow Mercedes to eventually spinoff three- and four-cylinder options, with the three-pot arriving alongside the new inline-six.
In other news, AutoCar uncovered some details on the next C-Class AMG, which will ditch its excellent 6.2-liter, AMG V8 in favor of a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8, although we've already told you about that. What we didn't know at the time, though, was that the 4.0-liter would be paired first with a new, seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission and offer all-wheel drive. AC also reports that a nine-speed Speedshift is in the works.
A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]
Thu, Dec 18 2014Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.
Race recap: 2015 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is Germany rising as sun sets
Mon, Nov 30 2015Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg Rosberg doesn't attribute anything mystical to the form that got him ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. He said simply, "Before it was close in the other direction, now it's close in this direction." Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda went further, saying Rosberg's "brain has switched." Under the desert spotlights it switched so far ahead that Lewis Hamilton qualified nearly four tenths behind the German. Kimi Raikkonen flew the scarlet for Ferrari in third position. Being three spots ahead of Valtteri Bottas gave Raikkonen a huge advantage in locking up fourth position in the driver's championship. Even if he doesn't care about it, as he's publicly stated, Ferrari probably does. Teammate Sebastian Vettel was classified 16th after the German slowed down after making a mistake on his final hot lap, and neither he nor his engineer realized how quickly times were falling on a cooling track. He'd be promoted to 15th when Lotus driver Romain Grosjean was penalized for a gearbox change. Sergio Perez knocked it out of the park for Sahara Force India, claiming fourth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in fifth for Infiniti Red Bull Racing. Williams driver Bottas was in sixth, in front of the second Force India of Nico Hulkenberg and the second Williams of Felipe Massa in eighth. Daniil Kvyat ensured both Red Bulls were in the top 10 with his ninth position, and Carlos Sainz got the upper hand in qualifying over his Toro Rosso teammate Max Verstappen for the final time this year, rounding out the top 10. Beyond Nico Rosberg's mind, one of his weaknesses was his slow starts. Those are stronger, too, the German tearing off away from the field when the lights went out. Hamilton bogged enough to have to defend from Perez behind, the Mexican trying to slide between Hamilton and Raikkonen on the run to the first corner. Rosberg held the lead into Turn 1 and likewise held it through Turn 21 on the last lap of the race, only ceding it during pit stops. Rosberg's 14th victory gets him level with Graham Hill on the wins list – on the anniversary of Hill's death in a plane crash – and marks the first time in his 10-year F1 career that he's won three races in a row. More proof of his strength: the last few races we haven't heard Rosberg ask for regular updates about what Hamilton's doing, he just drives. Hamilton gave it his best but that wasn't enough.
