Its getting close to spring time and you have that itch to drive a classic but inexpensive 3 season car. This is it and you deserve to have your fun. I need to let this great one go. As such you have an opportunity to get one of my treasures for a steal. This is your opportunity to own a Vintage Mercedes. It is well maintained 1980 450 Sl and is the perfect combination of old world luxury and universal appeal. Fast competent luxurious stylish and built like a Panzer tank they are the choice of many classic car collectors who like to both show their cars and drive them on a weekend getaways. With less than 160K miles on its original powertrain this rock solid 450 SL is about as close to driving a brand new 33 year old luxury car as you can get. When it was made in 1980 it was the pinnacle of luxury and high performance that represents a class and style unmatched even today with its elegant lines. If you're one of those Daimler diehards who'sENZ looking for the ultimate old school Merc or just looking for a really fun second car that makes heads turn but not wallets burn, this 450 SL is an incredible find! While in exceptional shape for any vehicle 32 years old this is not a new car. Look at all the photos supplied and see that you agree with the description.

This 1980 Mercedes 450 SL is a well-maintained classic. Its subdued Charcoal paint carries just the right amount of refinement worthy of a Mercedes badge and looking at its solid flanks there's no question it was constructed with some fine workmanship. Fit finish and panel gaps are exactly what you would expect from a vintage car with the three-pointed star on its nose. For a car that is 32 years old, it has been driven steadily as my three season car the entire time and has never been fully restored this 450 SL is simply a beauty!

Like most vintage Mercedes this 450 SLs styling is brilliantly executed with straight sharp edged proportions which recall the days when automakers didn't have to worry about wringing the efficiency out of every single drop of gasoline. At the front of the car a traditional over-sized and chrome trimmed SL grille cages a large chrome Mercedes emblem between four headlights and two bright marker lights. Below that grille a freestanding bumper hangs familiar chrome trimmed driving lights inside of turn signals; and behind that grille a sculpted hood wears a traditional chrome Mercedes-Benz badge. Behind the hood the glass sits inside of stainless trim which hooks to either a black cloth top to keep out summer rain or an optional accessory hard top to mount a heavier assault on nasty winter elements (the hardtop is included for free with the sale of the car but it's not in working shape and has to be worked on before its useable. Therefore consider it a bonus to the buyer). I personally never used the hardtop. I only used the soft top on those few days that I was unable to enjoy the wind all around me. The soft top side windows both need replacement. The price has been significantly reduced to account for these items. At the sides of the car body moldings parallel both finned rockers with stainless edge guards and classy looking pin stripes. In the middle of the doors slick chrome handles add form to function and at the top of the doors factory fresh chrome mirrors look good and work better. At the back of the car tri-color taillights ride above a second freestanding chrome bumper and fresh chrome Mercedes trunk emblems complement both a chrome power antenna and subtle chrome trunk trim.

Lift the long hood and you'll find a lot of advanced technology that allows this 450 SL to provide a smooth ride. It's meant for long haul cruising. Take it out on the road fully pressurize the electronic fuel injectors. The big motor is smooth powerful accelerates well in any gear. Cosmetically everything here looks like a well preserved 32 year old car with on very close inspection only the hints of that age with a few rust bubbles on the driver door and right quarter panel and normal wear under the frame that aren't apparent except under close inspection. The care is a real looker and head turn when you drive. For a 32 year old car it has aged exceptional well but it's not new and classic car buyers understand the difference.

And everything from the brake hoses and exhaust system to the fuel tank and fuel lines looks to be in good working order. In addition, I have not had the R-12 refilled which is getting more expensive and difficult to obtain and it most likely will need to be done again this summer. As I ride top-down, the wind makes A/C unnecessary for me. Under those floors rocks solid Mercedes engineering provides a luxurious ride that while not too firm also doesn't feel like a traditional luxury barge. The car's original double A-arm front and coil spring rear suspension keeps body roll in check and well balanced 4-wheel disc brakes provide reliable drama-free stops from virtually any speed. On the outside of those disc brakes 14 inch painted steel wheels present a like-new appearance and wear 205/75. In addition, there are four extra rims that are worn. A solid convertible like this cool Mercedes can turn even the most monotonous drives into fun open-air adventures. And thanks to their combination of summertime sun and stiff structure it's no wonder these cars were and still remain one of the most popular hobby Mercedes of all time.

Inside this well-mannered 450 SL is Teutonic luxury at its finest. Perforated leather buckets are supremely comfortable and have aged well. Saddle tinted and do show some wear but well under that expected for being 32 years old. In front of those seats the gauges are laid out in the typical Mercedes fashion of three binnacles with simple dials and lighted pointers. It should be noted that the odometer has worked sporadically since last summer. Behind those gauges the dash is trimmed in wood features a retrofitted pioneer CD player and flows into a great looking wood topped console. Inside the console the cars simple wood shifter sits between a vertically oriented climate control system and switches for standard power windows. Below the console Saddle carpet presents much much better than its age would suggest and at the sides of the seats well-padded Saddle door panels feature great looking chrome trim and perfectly functional chrome door handles. In front of the driver a familiar black Mercedes branded steering wheel provides an excellent connection to the road while still maintaining a luxury car feel. And below the convertible boot a fully carpeted trunk has enough room to stash a couple of sets of golf clubs. Included with the sales is the cars original owner's manual original, accessory books and a shop repair book.

2015 Mexican Grand Prix is a lot like old times

Mon, Nov 2 2015

The last time Formula One visited Mexico, in 1992, 26 cars powered by eight engine manufacturers (counting Honda and Mugen-Honda separately) lined up on the grid; it would have been nine engine makers but the Brabham-Judd cars failed to qualify. In 1992 Lewis Hamilton was seven years old, Sebastian Vettel was five, Max Verstappen was still five years away from being born. Two of the current Sky Sports F1 commentary team, Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert, were drivers. The starting three were Nigel Mansell on pole – 39 years old, this the year he'd win his only World Championship – and Riccardo Patrese both driving Williams-Renault cars, followed by Michael Schumacher in a Benetton-Ford. Only 13 of the 26 starters would finish. The circuit is has been reworked to today's safer standards, the track surface is brand new and slippery, but the atmosphere and packed grandstands haven't changed. Nico Rosberg was another point of consistency, scoring pole position for the fourth race in a row to beat his now-World-Champion teammate Hamilton by almost two-tenths of a second. The last time Rosberg turned pole position into a victory? The Spanish Grand Prix back in May. Vettel locked up third for Ferrari, followed by the Infiniti Red Bull Racing duo of Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo. Williams went two-up as well, Valtteri Bottas in sixth ahead of Felipe Massa in seventh. Max Verstappen turned in a great late lap to reserve eighth place, Sergio Perez did all he could in front of his home crowd to get ninth, teammate Nico Hulkenberg the caboose in the top ten. In that 1992 race the first three on the grid finished the race in the same order after Mansell dominated, and it was almost the same in 2015. If Rosberg had driven the whole season like he drove today the Driver's World Championship would still be up for grabs. He got a great start and held his line through the first corner, coming out ahead of Hamilton through the initial kinks, pulling away as soon as he got to the straight. Hamilton was never more than a few seconds behind, but every time the Brit inched closer the German found a few more tenths to keep his distance. The field got bunched up when the Safety Car came out on Lap 53 after Vettel spun and got stuck in the barriers, but Rosberg handled the restart perfectly. Both drivers made small mistakes in the last few laps while driving on the edge, but Rosberg earned a strong victory, crossing the line two seconds ahead of his teammate.

2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 First Drive

Mon, Jan 19 2015

Imagine the audacity: during the salad days of the early 2000s, the company that invented the automobile – already synonymous with class-leading luxury – sought to further expand its portfolio by crashing the ultraluxury party. Going up against the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Mercedes-Benz traded its unmistakable Three-Pointed Star for a Mighty Mouse-like logo, exhuming a stately, long-dead German marque originally founded in 1909. The long-wheelbase Maybach 62 listed at an epic $360,000, while later spinoffs included curiosities like the nearly $700,000 Zeppelin, and a roofless, seven-figure limousine dubbed Laundaulet. By the time the financial bubble finally burst in 2008, the brand's fate was all but sealed, with US sales dropping into the double digits. It limped along another four years, but when the nameplate finally went kerplunk, it left behind it a trail of disappointed movers, shakers, moguls and rappers. The perfect postmodern metaphor for the brand's funeral pyre? Kanye West and Jay-Z's Otis music video, in which a perfectly fine Maybach is chopped and deconstructed, flames spewing out the tailpipes as it powerslides through an empty parking lot. Meet The (Sorta) New Boss Rising from the ashes of hubris is the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600, a recalibrated stab at high-end luxury with a startlingly similar, yet different, approach to its forbear. Like the last go, the new sled features a significantly longer wheelbase, which stretches 8.1 inches over the standard S600. Additional sound damping helps it claim the quietest rear cabin in all of production automobiledom, and posher trim bits include a rim of wood surrounding the reclining rear seats. Among the livery-focused special features is a rearview mirror-mounted microphone to amplify the driver's voice, an available rear fridge, and an executive seat package with folding tray tables. The super high-end hallmarks are there – a twin-turbo V12 dispatching sub-5 second 0 to 60 times, a stunning 24 speaker Burmester sound system, double-M branded silver plate champagne flutes, et al. – but the hyperinflated price tag is not. Starting at $189,350, roughly half the cost of the old flagship, the new Maybach isn't even the most expensive Mercedes-Benz you can buy. That distinction goes to the S65 AMG Coupe, which empties your coffers to the tune of $230,900.

Car dealers, factories and ports close in the path of Hurricane Florence

Thu, Sep 13 2018

Hurricane Florence has caused CarMax to close four stores in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The closed locations are in Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Winterville and Virginia Beach. It is possible for the company to close more stores, reports Automotive News. Daimler and Volvo have also shuttered their manufacturing facilities in the region to prepare for Florence. The storm is expected to reach North Carolina and South Carolina today or tomorrow. Automotive News says every coastal car dealer it reached on Tuesday was closing, and others not in the projected landfall area were monitoring the situation. There are approximately nine million vehicles in operation in the area that Florence is expected to hit, with a vehicle density of 162 vehicles per square mile. It is likely that not as many vehicles will be lost as during hurricanes Harvey and Irma, as population is less dense; areas affected by those storms had over 300 vehicles per square mile. The chief economist of Cox Automotive told Automotive News that some 20,000 to 40,000 vehicles could end up flooded if Florence keeps its path; however, recent reports have indicated Florence has weakened to a category 2 hurricane on Thursday. Tesla has again unlocked more range for some of its older models to make evacuation easier; the same was done a year ago in preparation for Hurricane Irma. As well as automotive manufacturers and dealers, automotive transport providers are readying for the storm and clearing cargo away. The container and auto terminals at Port Charleston will be closed from Thursday to Saturday, affecting part shipments to the BMW manufacturing facility in Spartanburg; BMW's spokespersons have said no production disruption is expected. Parts are delivered via railroad to Spartanburg by Norfolk Southern, which is also suspending operations for the time being. Vehicle hauler United Road has moved its rigs to safer regions and suspended deliveries, and car carrier vessels are trying to make it away from the storm's path in time.
