Up for auction with modest reserve is a gorgeous 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster with 89,xxx original miles.

The story......
Cars have numerous areas and systems that make up the "whole" essence of that car: body + fender, drive train, undercarriage, chrome, body rubber, interior, convertible top etc. We are very appreciative of garage kept cars, because we notice that systems like body rubber, paint, and even chrome has less sun and weather damage. This car fits into the category of a garage kept car, due to the overall freshness of many items, and of course the undeniably low miles. This car has been a California car for 99% of its life span. It has never seen snow or salt. It is a two woman owner vehicle and never smoked in. The car still smells as new.

Excellent appearance aside, this car drives well.  We could go down a list of typical W107 front squeaks, rear clunks, slipping shifts, and engine maladies that crop up with high miles and/or needed maintenance.  The spark plugs and distributor cap were all replaced within the last 100 miles. It is tight, responsive, and smooth. Our drive and test sessions were filled with moments of appreciation and amazement at the speed and agility of this Mercedes

A car is original only once.  Full owner's manuals, stamped service books, original tool kit, spare tire, top removal tool and first aid kit and all factory stickers/vin plates all remain. Paint presents itself extremely well like factory new with only a few minor flaws, perfect glass all the way around and low miles make for an investment quality car.  The original upgraded factory Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels are in excellent overall condition. Tires are less than 1000 miles old. Great looking original chrome, full - color lenses, and lustrous paint give this car an extremely high presentation quality. Not as visible, but of utmost importance: a rust free body structure.

While driving we take note of engine temperature, oil pressure and other gauge readings.  It is important to note that we have put this car through over a hundred miles of road testing and it has performed nicely. The VDO gauges are all operational, turn signals, power windows, power antenna, hazard lights, headlamps, odometer/trip meter, tail lamps, break lights all function. There is an aftermarket cd player installed in this vehicle with speakers that were placed tastefully in the rear compartment.  The vehicle will also include a collector 1980 Baja California/Mexico license plate seen in the pictures.

We could spend additional time expounding on the positive attributes of this car. However, this is where we stop to point out a few flaws on this masterpiece of German engineering. First, while the convertible top is in excellent condition .  The canvas top underneath has only been up a few times in the cars lifespan however it is not perfect with two minor rips in the seems, but presents itself nicely and still looks presentable. The factory A/C is currently non operational but as an added bonus we will include a re-manned working A/C compressor and brand new belt for installation if deemed necessary for hot weather days if you don't feel like using the convertible feature of this vehicle.. (The expensive part has been taken care of for the new buyer). The factory dash is very nice with a minor flaw or two and presents itself well. The factory seats are in very good condition with the only signs of wear on the drivers side, side. The tops and bottoms are in excellent shape however and conditioned to last many years more. The carpet presents itself nicely as well as door panels, glove box and trunk are also very nice.

In summary, we are loving this car. The weather is beginning to warm up and it is a blast to drive with the top off on warmer weather days. Top off weather will be upon the rest of the Northern Hemisphere very shortly, so plan ahead. This car has a free and clear Idaho title and is currently registered and roadworthy.

2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 First Drive

Mon, Jan 19 2015

Imagine the audacity: during the salad days of the early 2000s, the company that invented the automobile – already synonymous with class-leading luxury – sought to further expand its portfolio by crashing the ultraluxury party. Going up against the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Mercedes-Benz traded its unmistakable Three-Pointed Star for a Mighty Mouse-like logo, exhuming a stately, long-dead German marque originally founded in 1909. The long-wheelbase Maybach 62 listed at an epic $360,000, while later spinoffs included curiosities like the nearly $700,000 Zeppelin, and a roofless, seven-figure limousine dubbed Laundaulet. By the time the financial bubble finally burst in 2008, the brand's fate was all but sealed, with US sales dropping into the double digits. It limped along another four years, but when the nameplate finally went kerplunk, it left behind it a trail of disappointed movers, shakers, moguls and rappers. The perfect postmodern metaphor for the brand's funeral pyre? Kanye West and Jay-Z's Otis music video, in which a perfectly fine Maybach is chopped and deconstructed, flames spewing out the tailpipes as it powerslides through an empty parking lot. Meet The (Sorta) New Boss Rising from the ashes of hubris is the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600, a recalibrated stab at high-end luxury with a startlingly similar, yet different, approach to its forbear. Like the last go, the new sled features a significantly longer wheelbase, which stretches 8.1 inches over the standard S600. Additional sound damping helps it claim the quietest rear cabin in all of production automobiledom, and posher trim bits include a rim of wood surrounding the reclining rear seats. Among the livery-focused special features is a rearview mirror-mounted microphone to amplify the driver's voice, an available rear fridge, and an executive seat package with folding tray tables. The super high-end hallmarks are there – a twin-turbo V12 dispatching sub-5 second 0 to 60 times, a stunning 24 speaker Burmester sound system, double-M branded silver plate champagne flutes, et al. – but the hyperinflated price tag is not. Starting at $189,350, roughly half the cost of the old flagship, the new Maybach isn't even the most expensive Mercedes-Benz you can buy. That distinction goes to the S65 AMG Coupe, which empties your coffers to the tune of $230,900.

Mercedes releases 6x6 G63 AMG specs and pics [w/video]

Fri, 15 Mar 2013

Mercedes-Benz has finally dropped full details on its insane G63 AMG 6x6. The machine puts 544 horsepower to all six wheels thanks to a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8. A seven-speed gearbox shuttles power to the ground via three sets of portal axles, which helps give this machine a full 15.75 inches of ground clearance. By comparison, the standard G63 AMG sits with just 8.27 inches of ground clearance. The extra lift allows this 6x6 to ford nearly 40 inches of water and run massive 37-inch tires. All told, there are five differential locks on this thing, all controlled by a special "locking logic" that provides the best traction possible for any given situation.
The controls offer up three stages of locking, which we can only assume range from JKLOL to OMGWTF. Right now, AMG says this monstrosity is only a show vehicle, but we imagine it wouldn't take much to convince the team to whip up one of your very own. Check out our full gallery and the press release below for all the nitty gritty. While you're down there, you can also check out the video on the machine one more time.

Fastest cars in the world by top speed, 0-60 and quarter mile

Tue, Feb 13 2024

A claim for the title of “Fastest Car in the World” might seem easy to settle. ItÂ’s actually anything but: Are we talking production cars, race cars or customized monsters? And what does “fastest” even mean? For years, car publications have tended to define “fastest” in terms of an unbeatable top speed. ThatÂ’s distinct from the “quickest” car in a Usain Bolt-style dash from the starting blocks, as with the familiar 0-60 mph metric. Professionals often focus on track lap times or elapsed time-to-distance, as with a drag racer thatÂ’s first to trip the beam of light at the end of a quarter-mile; or the 1,000-foot trip of nitromethane-powered NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car dragsters. Something tells us, however, that you're not seeking out an answer of "Brittany Force rewriting the NHRA record books with a 3.659-second pass at a boggling 338.17 mph." For most barroom speed arguments, the focus is firmly on cars you can buy in showrooms, even if many are beyond the financial means of all but the wealthiest buyers and collectors. Here are some of the enduring sources of speed claims, counter-claims, tall tales and taunting dismissals that are the lifeblood of car enthusiasts – now with EVs adding an unexpected twist to these passionate pursuits.   Fastest from the blocks: 0-60 mph Thirty years ago, any car that could clock 60 mph in five seconds or less was considered extremely quick. Today, high-performance, gasoline-powered sedans and SUVs are routinely breaking below 4 seconds. As of today, the 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 crushes all with a 0-60 mph time of just 1.66 seconds. That's simply absurd, but keep in mind the Demon was engineered with the single-minded purpose of going fast in a straight line. It's also important to realize that direct comparisons are difficult, because not all of these times were accomplished with similar conditions (prepped surfaces, adjustments for elevation and so on). The moral here is to take these times with a tiny grain of salt. After the Dodge, the Rimac Nevera comes in with an officially recorded 0-60 mph time of just 1.74 seconds. EVs crowd the quickest list, with the Pininfarina Battista coming in a few hundredths slower (1.79 seconds) than the Nevera and the Lucid Air sapphire (1.89 seconds) right after that. Eventually, you arrive to the Tesla Model S Plaid, which has a claimed 1.99-second 0-60 mph time, though instrumented testing by Car and Driver shows it accomplishes the deed in 2.1 seconds.
