For Sale a rare Euro Spec 1964 Mercedes 230SL, 4spd with working hard and soft tops VIN # 113042-10-001566 This great car is entirely solid and mechanically strong, finished in Mercedes Red (DB526 (mercedesrot)) and cognac leather, not MB Tex.  The car was originally delivered as white with red interior to a US Air force pilot in Germany in 1964.  Following his repatriation the car was shipped back to the US, specifically Denver, Co.  There, in 1985 the car underwent a frame off restoration.  In 2006 the widow of the owner sold the car to the last owner, who I purchased the car from in 2012.

During the course of the original ownership, the engine was swapped to the more powerful 250SL engine and rear brakes (both were considered common swaps to perform as the cars aged and their original spec engine under powering and stopping issues were more and more apparent).

This car is not a concourse car and I recommend you look elsewhere if that’s what you are after.  It is, however, a great daily/weekend driver (we drive almost daily during the spring and summer) and love taking it for weekend cruises.  She has been driven on weekend drives as far west as Pittsburgh, North to Cape Cod and South to Washington DC with no issues.   The paint on the car was redone 30 years ago, it is in generally great shape for 30 year old paint and as you can see, it shines very well.  There are some minor dings but the car is very presentable.  As you can see in the photos, the interior aside from the torn carpet near the shifter, is in good shape.  The dash wood has no cracks and the painted dash is not flaking, though some minor cracks are coming through.

We get a ton of questions, pictures, “awesome car!” and a lot of accolades.  During winter she is garage kept with a heater and a battery tender.  Included in the sale is the hardtop (which functions well), genuine Mercedes repair manual, all available receipts (including from the restoration), and true to size car cover.

The always interesting: why are you selling?  Pretty simple, no back seat, none at all and that causes issues when you are starting a family and need two practical cars rather than just one and I can’t talk my wife into a 3rd

Recently (April 2014) we repaired/replaced the following at the Blackhorse Garage in Bridgeport, Connecticut:

  • New front and rear brakes and rotors: $1,100
  • Brake fluid flush: $180
  • New front and rear shocks: $1,200
  • Engine valve adjustment and valve cover gasket: $850
  • Speedometer cable: $550
  • Oil and filter change: $150
  • Manual transmission fluid change: $125
  • Rear diff fluid change: $125

In 2011, the former owner replaced the following:

  • Steering box
  • Passenger side window crank element
  • Power steering pump and fluid
  •  Engine coolant flush

Since I am extremely open and upfront I want to list out the known items that need repairing and the price quotes I have received:

  • Door lock keys made: $50 (keys included with the car operate the starter and glove box)
  • Driver’s side window crank element (window goes up but not all the way without some help): $150
  • Heater duct replacement (common issue, originals were made of paper): $200
  • Front hood torsion bar replacement: $250
  • Windshield washer pump: $75

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a great example of a great driving classic that has everything going for it: beautiful color combination, mechanically strong, entirely original and solid undercarriage and original body.

I would be happy to further discuss it and answer any questions, so please feel free to email me or call me at 347-324-7118.  The Hagerty average value for a light #3/Strong #4 car, with hardtop (+$4,250) and 4spd (+10%) = $40,500.  My reserve is below that and I am willing to end the auction before close date.

Interested bidders can make an appointment with me to come and see the car before the Auction comes to an end.

The winning bidder is responsible for vehicle pick up or shipping at his/her own expense.  I am located in Darien, CT. I will make every effort to assist in the process and will be very accommodating and work with you.

$2,500 Deposit via PayPal is required within 48 hours of the auction closing.

Full payment required within 5 days of auction close. Payment must be in the form of wire transfer, Cashier's Check, or Cash.

Boston bombers were tracked using Mercedes mbrace [w/video]

Sun, 28 Apr 2013

We now know Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the two brothers said to be behind the Boston Marathon bombings, planned to head for New York City to detonate more improvised explosive devices. As it turns out, that plan was foiled by the quick thinking of one Mercedes-Benz owner, diligent police work and the Mercedes-Benz mbrace system. When the brothers carjacked a 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur identified only as "Danny," they didn't realize his Mercedes-Benz M-Class was equipped with the mbrace system, which can call for help in the event of an accident or track the vehicle in the event of a theft.
According to reports, the Tsarnaev brothers held Danny hostage for nearly 90 minutes while they drove around Boston forming a plan until they had to stop for fuel. When one of the brothers went inside to pay, the other put his gun down for a moment. Danny took the opportunity to unlatch his seat belt, open the door and run to another nearby gas station, where he told the owner to call the police.
When police arrived, they used the mbrace system to track the SUV after receiving Danny's permission, and it wasn't long before a shootout between police and the brothers ensued. When it was over, the eldest brother lay dead in the street. For more on the story, view the video report available below.

Man makes record-setting drive across the US in 28 hours, 50 minutes

Fri, 01 Nov 2013

Records, as the say, are made to be broken. Whether that's cramming the most hot dogs down your gullet, running a faster mile, or yes, driving across the United States, odds are that there's someone out there wants to eat more, run faster or drive harder. Speaking of that last example, the record for driving from a set location on the east coast, in particular the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, has been one that has fascinated gearheads since a guy named Cannonball Baker made the trek from New York to LA in 53 hours, 30 minutes, in 1933.
The competition saw its glory days when Car and Driver's Brock Yates came up with the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (more affectionately known as the Cannonball Run), although the record was most recently set by Alex Roy and his 32-hour, seven-minute trek behind the wheel of a BMW M5 in 2006. Now, there's a new champion, who made the trip from east to west in a scarcely imaginable 28 hours and 50 minutes, behind the wheel of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. That's works out to an average speed of 98 miles per hour over the course of 2,813.7 miles.
His name is Ed Bolian, and Jalopnik has a writeup of the epic voyage that details everything from the history of the Cannonball Run to Bolian's preparation and trouble finding co-drivers, to the trip itself. It is well worth a read.

Brabus 800 Roadster is a power-mad aristocrat

Wed, 06 Mar 2013

If we're being completely honest, we haven't exactly been in love with the aesthetics of the sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. It's mostly a front-end issue, with its glowering eagle-eye headlamps and upright, dinner-plate-sized Three-Pointed Star coming across to us as overwrought. That's particularly troublesome for a roadster whose history has of the most elegant designs of all time in its back catalog. Somehow, the new R231 generation's brash visuals seem more at home on this Brabus 800 Roadster to us.
That's probably because the high-dollar German tuner has turned up the wick on the SL's visuals even further, with carbon fiber bodywork, a more aggressive aero kit, matte hood scoop and complex two-finish wheels. It's all-the-way committed to its brashness, in other words - and justifiably so. Anything with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque has earned the right to look however it wants, right?
Brabus started with the SL65 and its not-exactly-underpowered 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, and went to town, fitting their own turbocharger and intercooler system, along with a less-restrictive exhaust system with driver-selectable sound levels and new engine electronics. The result is a 3.7-second 0-62 mph time, an electronically limited top whack of 217 mph... and one seriously compromised toupée.
