Mercedes releases first shot of AMG GT3

A week ago we got a rendering of the upcoming race-only Mercedes-AMG GT3, to be shown to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. Now, Mercedes has let loose a photo of the front of the car and it looks very serious, a trait undoubtedly helped by its link to the past: that grille motif goes straight back to the W154 Silver Arrows pre-war racer driven to the 1938 European Championship by Rudolf Caracciola. Those angry, angled and sunken headlights don't hurt, either. It will be ready in time for the 2016 GT3 season and come loaded with expectations, since the SLS AMG GT3 it replaces has been a victory machine around the world. Unlike that SLS, though, this car will spawn a hardcore road-going version - not to be called GT3 - with less weight and more power, armed to do battle with the coupe that comes first to mind when that alphanumeric is mentioned. With the way the AMG GT S already gobbles up circuits, we're prepared to be impressed by what comes next. As I am about to nod off on my long leg flight from Minneapolis to Anchorage ahead of driving to the Arctic Circle, the friendly twenty-something Alaskan knitting furiously in the seat next to me pauses and says, "When you're driving up there, don't open your windows." In the dead of winter? I hadn't planned on cruising alfresco, but her warning to keep the glazing snugged against the weatherstripping is one I would take to heart. She continues: "If you leave 'em open, a fox is liable to jump right in. There are lots of rabid foxes up there, and they leap into your car and just Go. To. Town." And here I was, thinking that a curious bear or maybe an ill-placed moose in the road was going to be my biggest potential four-legged threat. Watch Evo pick its 2015 Car of the Year in this epic video

With just a few days left in 2015, it's the perfect time to check out Evo's annual Car of the Year test to determine the greatest performance vehicle of the last 12 months. The writers' picks for the 11 finalists spanned a breadth of engaging models and included: Peugeot 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport, Lamborghini Aventador SV, Seat Leon Cupra Sub8, McLaren 675LT, Porsche 991 GT3 RS, Porsche Cayman GT4, Honda Civic Type R, Ferrari 488 GTB, Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, Lotus Evora 400, and Mercedes-AMG GT S. For the venue to test the mettle of these performance machines, Evo stuck close to home this year and visited the twisting roads at the beautiful north coast of Scotland. Racing brothers Marino and Dario Franchitti also came along for the ride to provide two more voices in the competitive challenge to determine a winner. Evo's video explains why each model deserves to be among such rarified company but doesn't gloss over their faults either. There can be only one winner, though.
