++Rare California CARB Certified 230G Mercedes Gelandewagen Cabriolet++

IMPORTED BY AMG USA

This G actually has an interesting history.  This is one of the first G-wagens ever made.  It is number 127.  The G is in fact so early that it is part of the original batch made for the Shah of Iran, but never delivered.

The Shah was the reason for the G, he owned most of Mercedes at the time, the largest shareholder.  He demanded a car be built to rival the Land Rovers.  He placed the first order to pay upfront for development costs.

The Shah

ordered over 700 to be built and start a hand-assembled production line.  This was #127 in that fleet.

He was deposed in 1979 and never got all his Gwagens.  They were then locked up in a warehouse in Austria and sold years later through authorized and friendly to Mercedes "channels'.... this one being brought over to the states with a few others by AMG.

It has some oddities that no production G has.  Differences in trim like mb-tex wrapped console and 1 piece gauge cluster, metal window sashes, heavy duty frame and chassis, modified rear cross tubes, air intake baffle, etc.

92,200 miles with all records since imported in mid 1980s

Was imported into California and Certified correctly with DOT, EPA, CARB by AMG.

Car includes all original AMG paperwork that documents the miles and conversion to US specs.

Nice driving car, little to no vibrations as found on many old Gwagens, good smooth drivetrain, nice clutch, etc.

4wd works as it should.

Low Range Transfer case with shift on the fly 2:1 reduction works well

Axle Differential Lockers in both front and rear diffs (need servicing)

++Lockers have not been used in a long time, likely need new brake fluid flushed thru locker system. Brakes need servicing.

Nice condition tires, all terrain type, on original steel wheels.  Spare tire on swing out carrier.

Rear Seat Bench folds down and forward, and is also completely removable with just two bolts.

Soft Top with Safari Frame and mounting rails and cords.

Center console in great shape with no cracking

Dash pads are nice, see one photo showing small portion towards the driver side that has some adhesive missing.

Alpine CD Stereo with removable face.

Rear Mudflaps

Front Mud Aprons

Mb Tex original seats in excellent condition in the front, rear bench has tear in bottom.

All seats come with additional black seat covers.

This G was originally furnished new with a Stromburg Carb 175 which has been upgraded to a Weber.

Please note that the rear right bumper corner is broken, and is taped together.   Note that in most photos the car is missing one front bumper corner, we have replaced this since the photos were taken last week.

Please note that the soft top works well, but that the rear roll up window has a small tear in the bottom and its zippers only work so-so. The rest of the top works very well, and that roll-up rear window is likely all needing repair.   Car has not been used in foul weather in many years.  Top was just put back on the car for the first time in over 8 years.

Thank you for your interest.

It is an interesting rare Gelandewagen.

It comes with the original GFG build tag and is stamped 127 which matches the frame stamping.

Vettel steals victory from Hamilton in Australian Grand Prix

Sun, Mar 25 2018

MELBOURNE, March 25 – Sebastian Vettel made full use of the virtual safety car to sneak in front of Lewis Hamilton and hold off the frustrated champion to win Formula One's season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Mercedes engine's infamous 'party mode' that delivered Hamilton a blistering pole lap on Saturday could do little once Ferrari's Vettel nosed ahead when re-entering from pit-lane midway through the race at Albert Park. Pole-sitter Hamilton had appeared set to coast to victory with a clear pace advantage but the race turned on its head with the safety car, which was called after Romain Grosjean's Haas failed and rolled to a stop at turn two. In another bonus for Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen finished third, fending off Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and leaving the unlucky Australian still searching for a first podium in his home race. "We got a bit lucky." Four-times world champion Vettel claimed a 48th overall win and his third in Melbourne following his victories at Albert Park last year and in 2011. "It was needless to say we got a bit lucky with the timing of the safety car," the German, who had started from third place and inherited the lead when Hamilton and Raikkonen had pitted earlier in the race, told reporters. "It's not the easiest track to pass." For Hamilton, the result was a bitter pill to swallow and had echoes of last year's race. Vettel also managed to re-enter in front of him from pit-lane in 2017 before burning away to victory while the pole-sitting Briton was blocked by traffic. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said his team had miscalculated the margin between the cars during the safety car period. "We thought we had enough margin," he told the BBC. "It must have been a software bug in the system that caused us to get it wrong. We are digging deep now to understand where we had a problem." "I don't understand what's happened." Hamilton, who cockily spoke of "wiping the smile off" Vettel's face with his pole lap on Saturday, battled to keep positive. "Even now I don't understand what's happened," the 33-year-old told reporters. "I did everything I believe I was supposed to do." After the pit-lane setback, Hamilton drove hard to reel in Vettel and battled back after taking a slide at a corner that blew out the lead to nearly three seconds. But he finally waved the white flag in the closing laps to preserve the car for future races.

How Atlanta landed Mercedes-Benz

Fri, Jan 16 2015

The first phone call came last spring. An international real estate company had a high-profile client that wanted to relocate its North American headquarters. The client, whose identity was confidential, narrowed the list of prospective sites to Texas, North Carolina and Georgia. Would Georgia officials be interested in a discussion? Behind the scenes, they worked for months to lure the company, touting lower housing prices and a relaxed pace of life. They arranged interviews with CEOs of other companies in Atlanta who could speak about the area's business climate and they augmented negotiations with key executives from a utility company and Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport. Ultimately, they were also offered a reported $40 to $50 million in tax incentives. Secrecy was vital. The intermediary and officials with the Georgia Department of Economic Development gave the project a code name that changed three times throughout the summer and fall, so that only a few people had access to the most basic information. It was called Operation Eagle. It was only in September that the Georgia officials learned the identity of the client, Mercedes-Benz, and only last week that Operation Eagle bore fruit when the company publicly announced it would relocate its North American headquarters from Montvale, NJ, to the north side of Atlanta. "They put themselves in a spot on the north side where millennials can live in the city, and people can live in the northern suburbs and raise a family," Tom Croteau, deputy commissioner of global commerce for the GDED, tells Autoblog. "And when you combine that with the business aspect of a lower-cost environment, that's what we were able to provide them, along with a long-term commitment to support them however we can." In the move, the company benefits from a location that's closer to a growing base of suppliers that work with German car companies in the Southeast, as well as closer proximity to ports in Brunswick, GA, that are some of the busiest in the country. Mercedes-Benz will bring 800 to 1,000 jobs to the area. In addition to the employment, Georgia benefits from another notch in its automotive belt. Atlanta is already home to Porsche's North American headquarters. Kia Motors has a major manufacturing facility in West Point, GA, and General Motors opened an information technology center in Atlanta two years ago that employs roughly 1,000 workers.
