New Mercedes E-Class nearly exposed, may be Maybach

Mon, Sep 14 2015

The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is marching closer and closer to production, with a new round of spy photos giving us our best look yet at the S-Class-inspired looks of the German brand's executive luxury car. There really is very little camouflage this time around – what's there looks more like the kind of plastic wrapping you'd see on a freshly imported vehicle at the port. In front, we can see the new E will wear similar LED accents to the S- and C-Class. The E-Class' big and little brothers also inspired the tail of the new model, where we can see slightly disguised, vertically oriented LED taillights. Prominent, enclosed exhausts are very similar to what we saw in our spy shots of the Mercedes-Maybach E-Class. Aside from the exhausts, this particular car also wears the same blingy wheels as the range-topping tester we spied last August. The thick-rimmed, multi-spoke design isn't the only giveaway to this car's luxurious intentions, though. Our last Maybach sighting showed a car completely covered in camo, making it difficult to tell just how large the rear doors are relative to the car we're seeing today. Instead of the doors, though, we suggest you look at the windows. Like the August spy photos, this prototype features tinted rear glass, which could perhaps indicate that we're looking at yet another example the second Mercedes-Maybach model. So is this yet another Maybach E-Class? We're leaning towards yes. The size of the back doors – and the rear quarter window, in particular – is close enough to what we saw last month, and the presence of tinted glass, the same exhausts, and the same wheels can't be discounted either.

VW gets help from Daimler to deal with VW scandal

Sun, Oct 18 2015

Volkswagen has hired Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt, a compliance officer, away from Daimler. Normally, this wouldn't be particularly big news. The reason you might care is summed up rather succinctly by Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Center for Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, who said that Hohmann-Dennhardt is being tasked with helping the entire German automobile industry "clean up the collateral damage from the diesel deceit." Hohmann-Dennhardt had to be released early from her contract with Daimler in order to take on this difficult role with an inter-country rival. VW Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch thanked "Daimler AG for agreeing to our request to the early termination of Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt's contract." What makes this move even more interesting is that Daimler and Volkswagen have had a terse relationship in recent years due to the poaching of important employees from one side to the other. According to Bloomberg, Hohmann-Dennhardt's contract with Daimler had been secured through February of 2017, but with her early release, she will start her new role on VW's board of management in January of 2016. Daimler, for its part, released a statement suggesting the decision was made "in the interests of the good corporate governance of the German automotive industry." Prior to her employment at Daimler, Hohmann-Dennhardt served for 11 years as a judge. Reading between the lines, it seems VW's massive corporate scandal has rocked the German auto industry to its core. Enough so, in fact, that Daimler would be willing to let go of a highly talented and well-respected executive – the first woman ever appointed to the German automaker's board – who had served since there since 2011. Feel free to read through VW's entire statement, below. She is to join the Volkswagen Group as of January 1, 2016 as the Board Member for Integrity and Legal Affairs.

Here are all the new 2022 season F1 cars (UPDATED)

Fri, Feb 18 2022

Update: Since this post's original publishing, the rest of this season's teams have revealed their 2022 cars. We've updated the post with all of them, so it now includes every 2022 F1 car on the grid. The updated story continues below. Reveals of the 2022 F1 cars are coming fast and heavy, and at this point, every team has shown off their redesigned cars. This being the case, we figured it was time to provide you all with a place to see all the cars at once. The gallery above holds photos of all the cars, and below you’ll see all them broken down by teams and drivers, along with quotes from the drivers and team leaders that come via F1Â’s official website where the cars were revealed. Mercedes W13 - Lewis Hamilton and George Russel "It just takes you back to being a kid," Hamilton said. "I think itÂ’s always exciting watching, I mean with this new era of car, weÂ’ve never seen such a drastic change, right? "So itÂ’s such a huge change in so many ways, that itÂ’s just been really interesting seeing the designers and everyone coming together to find the best ways of creating a masterpiece." “It feels incredible, obviously Lewis and I have driven so many laps in the simulator of this,” Russel said. “WeÂ’ve seen all the drawings, weÂ’ve had so many meetings and presentations about it, but suddenly seeing it all come together, seeing all of the men and women who have put so much hard work and grit into making this, and coming together here, I think it looks incredible. “And I think the silver [coming] back, weÂ’ve had an incredible livery with the black in the past couple of years – but the silver back on track I think is going to look incredible." Ferrari F1-75 - Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz “I think it looks aggressive, it looks radical, and I think it looks beautiful also Â… I just hope itÂ’s fast,” said Sainz. “ItÂ’s innovative, different, thinking a bit out of the box. I like it because itÂ’s just radical, which is what you want to see when you see a new car.” “Yes, I do [like the livery],” Leclerc said. “I think it fits perfectly. ItÂ’s a bit of a dark red, looks a bit more aggressive, but for a car like this, I think it fits perfectly.
