Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid ready for 'major role' in urban areas

Fri, Jan 17 2014

We finally got a clear look at the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid at the Frankfurt Motor Show last fall, but it took until this week to learn what the vision (see what we did there) is that Mercedes-Benz has for the PHEV. Despite it's generous size, Mercedes thinks this is a vehicle that will work well in urban areas. Speaking to members of the media during the Detroit Auto Show, Thomas Weber, Daimler AG management board member and research and development chief for Mercedes-Benz cars, said that the S500 PHEV, "will play a major role in congested areas" and that it will offer "a lot of driving pleasure." Part of that pleasure will come from a 0-62 mile-per-hour time of around 5.5 seconds thanks to a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6 and an 80-kilowatt electric motor. The PHEV also has a 19-mile EV range, which will put it at the bottom end of the Three-Pointed star plug-in lineup. The upcoming C-Class plug-in, for example, will likely go, "closer to 50 km [31 miles]," Weber said, according to Green Car Reports. The S500 PHEV will go on sale in Europe later this year and will come to the US in early 2015 but there is no timeline, yet, for the C-Class plug-in (and the standard gas-electric hybrid version) or the even-more-future E-Class hybrids. Man makes record-setting drive across the US in 28 hours, 50 minutes

Fri, 01 Nov 2013

Records, as the say, are made to be broken. Whether that's cramming the most hot dogs down your gullet, running a faster mile, or yes, driving across the United States, odds are that there's someone out there wants to eat more, run faster or drive harder. Speaking of that last example, the record for driving from a set location on the east coast, in particular the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, has been one that has fascinated gearheads since a guy named Cannonball Baker made the trek from New York to LA in 53 hours, 30 minutes, in 1933.
The competition saw its glory days when Car and Driver's Brock Yates came up with the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (more affectionately known as the Cannonball Run), although the record was most recently set by Alex Roy and his 32-hour, seven-minute trek behind the wheel of a BMW M5 in 2006. Now, there's a new champion, who made the trip from east to west in a scarcely imaginable 28 hours and 50 minutes, behind the wheel of a 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. That's works out to an average speed of 98 miles per hour over the course of 2,813.7 miles.
His name is Ed Bolian, and Jalopnik has a writeup of the epic voyage that details everything from the history of the Cannonball Run to Bolian's preparation and trouble finding co-drivers, to the trip itself. It is well worth a read.

Mercedes-Benz concept car takes driverless vehicles into the future

Mon, Mar 23 2015

A new Mercedes-Benz concept car is looking to give Google a driverless run for their money. Unlike the cars we drive today, the Mercedes-Benz F015 will drive us -- acting as a personal chauffeur so passengers can relax or worry about important things like work, while the automated vehicle worries about the roads. We have to admit, it looks significantly more comfortable than Google's experimental driverless cars. Keeping up with their luxury brand, the car is more of a lounge. Front seats can rotate so passengers can face each other, a touch screen coffee table extends into the middle of the space with just a tap, and touch screen monitors are built into the doors. In case you want to drive the old fashioned way, just swivel around and use the steering wheel and fold away pedals. On the outside, the vehicle communicates with pedestrians and other drivers using lights and vocal cues. If a pedestrian crosses the street in front of the car, a laser will project a crosswalk and a voice will let them know it's safe to cross. The F015 is really just a concept car and will likely never be sold on a car lot, but it may force Google to step up their game. Their current driverless car prototypes look like something out of a retro cartoon, whereas Mercedes' looks like it's straight out of the future. Weird Car News Mercedes-Benz driverless car
