Traction Control & Stability Systems

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Automatic Slip Control (ASR) Standard ESP compares the driver's intended course, via steering and braking inputs, to the vehicle's response, via lateral acceleration, rotation (yaw) and individual wheel speeds. ESP then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess engine power as needed to help correct understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing). ESP incorporates the functions of ASR traction control, which senses drive-wheel slip and individually brakes the slipping wheel or wheels and/or reduces excess engine power until control is regained.

Chassis
Front suspension Independent double wishbone with triangular lower control arms, antidive geometry and stabilizer bar. Separate gas-pressurized shock absorbers and coil springs.

Rear suspension Independent 5-arm multilink with geometry for antilift, antisquat and alignment control and stabilizer bar. Separate gas-pressurized shock absorbers and coil springs.

Steering Recirculating-ball with power assist and hydraulic damper. Turning Circle curb to curb 35.2 ft/10.7 m.

Steering Wheel turns lock-to-lock 3.2

Wheels Standard aluminum-alloy AMG ultrathin-spoke monoblock. 7.5Jx17 front and 8.5Jx17 rear.

Tires Steel-belted radial Standard 225/45ZR17 front and 245/40ZR17 rear, high-performance.1

Brakes 4-wheel disc, front discs ventilated.

Antilock Braking System (ABS) ABS senses impending wheel lockup under heavy braking and pumps the front brakes individually or the rear brakes together (to help maintain stability) as needed up to 30 times per second to prevent lockup and maintain steering ability.

Brake Assist Upon sensing emergency braking via the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal, Brake Assist immediately applies maximum available power boost, potentially reducing the overall stopping distance by eliminating the delay caused by a common human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough. Letting up on the brake pedal releases Brake Assist. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake system maintenance, and tire and road conditions.

Mercedes GLC spotted nearly nude ahead of tomorrow's reveal

Wed, Jun 17 2015

Mercedes is set to officially take the wraps off its new GLC-Class crossover tomorrow, but if you can't wait that long, here it is all but completely undisguised. The GLC, for those just joining us, is the replacement for the GLK, rounder and renamed to align more closely with the C-Class. It was previewed as a slant-roofed concept in Shanghai, but as you can see, it'll reach production with a more conventional greenhouse. Rooflines (and various show-car details) aside, the production GLC looks pretty close to the aforementioned Concept GLC Coupe. Certain elements on this pre-production unit still remain taped up to keep from our prying eyes – though the engineer driving it doesn't seem to mind. We can at least hope that rather ungainly looking chrome lower rear bumper element is just there to throw us off, or will look more convincing as part of a complete package. But we'll be finding out one way or another tomorrow... so watch this space. Related Video:

New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe spied in revealing state of dress

Tue, 19 Feb 2013

During a product briefing earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz told us that 2013 would be the "year of the S-Class." Makes sense, too, since the flagship Mercedes is so very close to finally showing its production-ready face. But the high-tech saloon isn't the only S-Class to talk about this year - quite the contrary. Seen here in decidedly revealing camouflage, the new S-Class Coupe will be joining its four-door compadre in the not-too-distant future, as well.
When it launches, the S-Class Coupe will officially do away with the CL-Class nomenclature. This doesn't come as a huge shock. After all, when the new E-Class coupe and convertible were launched, it officially marked the end of the long-running CLK-Class designation.
Thanks to the interesting camouflage seen here, we have a very good glimpse at how the S-Class Coupe will look when all of the molding and swirly paper are peeled off. Rakish body lines pulled from the CLS-Class meet a much more dynamic front fascia. Out back, there are horizontal taillamps rather than the vertical units used on the current car, and the whole package seems very svelte. Our spy photographer even posits that this will be "the best-looking car from Mercedes-Benz in ages."
