2015 MV Agusta F4 RC superbike debuts with AMG livery
Sun, Mar 29 2015MV Agusta, the Italian motorcycle maker with 37 Constructors Championship trophies earned in Grand Prix racing, returned to the World Superbike Championship for the 2014 season. With one annual campaign under its belt, it has released the customer version of its racing superbike, the F4 RR. The street-legal version will come in two power levels depending on the exhaust: either 205.5 horsepower with the standard exhaust, or 212 hp with the 4-2-1-2 Termignoni race exhaust. At 386 pounds dry, the RC is about 33 pounds lighter than the World Superbike entrant, but it's still heavier than the competition from Aprilia, BMW, and Ducati. It is, though, a little more powerful than all of them in its full-fat guise. Compared to the RR, MV Agusta made changes to the RC that include a new cylinder head, crankshaft, and camshaft, larger fuel injectors and lighter pistons, a lithium-ion battery, and magnesium casings. Titanium connecting bolts affix a carbon fiber fairing done up in the AMG livery of the World Superbike ride. If you want one, act quickly and come strong: only 250 will be produced, at $46,000 a pop. If you're not that keen, there's a high-res gallery above. Mercedes Vision Tokyo Concept is a minivan for millennials [w/video]
Wed, Oct 28 2015Mercedes-Benz believes that the next generation of drivers would much rather interact digitally with their machines than actually be behind the wheel. To satiate the desires of these tech-obsessed passengers, the company reimagines the minivan as a rolling, autonomous lounge called the Vision Tokyo Concept. The silver lozenge debuts at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. With its rounded edges, plentiful glass, and satiny Alubeam paint, the Vision Tokyo looks like a minivan from the high-tech future out of a William Gibson story. Up front, the windshield wraps all the way around, and the side glass is screen-printed in silver for privacy. The massive grille is illuminated and can even show the sound pattern of the music playing inside. Meanwhile at the rear, red LED lights surround the oval window. While the exterior is fairly minimalist, the Vision Tokyo puts its biggest emphasis on pampering the five passengers inside. They enter through a massive gullwing door in the concept's side, and rather than traditional rows of seats, there's a wraparound couch. Once comfortable, occupants can use LED screens on the walls, and in a truly sci-fi touch there's a holographic entertainment system in the center. Should someone actually need to drive, a seat can also deploy from the couch, and a steering wheel slides into position. Riding in this metallic chariot at least isn't too bad for the environment. The powertrain combines a hydrogen fuel cell and batteries capable of inductive charging. In total, the combo would offer a claimed range of 609 miles – 118 miles purely on electricity and 491 miles from the H2. That kind of driving distance should keep the digital party inside rocking for quite a wild night. Check out the high-res image gallery above and the video below. And for more, stay tuned for our live coverage from the Tokyo Motor Show. Mobile club lounge for young, urban trendsetters Mercedes-Benz Vision Tokyo: Connected Lounge Stuttgart/Tokyo. The Vision Tokyo is the latest trailblazing spatial experience to come from Mercedes-Benz: its monolithic structure, futuristic design idiom and unique lounge ambience in the interior define it as luxurious, young and progressive – thus making it a fitting tribute to the sophisticated megacity and trendsetting metropolis that is Tokyo.
Time to catch up with Jay Leno's Garage, including his Lamborghini Espada restoration
Tue, Dec 23 2014If you're already jealous of the time, effort and money that Jay Leno can devote to his massive car collection, prepare to get a little greener with envy with this latest video from Jay Leno's Garage. Instead of the usual format of discussing a model for about ten minutes and then taking it out for a test drive, this week Leno gives viewers on a tour of over a dozen projects concurrently happening in his stable. The breadth of the vehicles shown and the things being done to them run the entire span of the automotive hobby. At the same time, Jay's shop is working on just a simple restoration of his 1969 Lamborghini Espada (pictured), and at the other side of the building, the team is rebuilding a wood-bodied 1914 Detroit Electric from scratch. He eventually plans to slot a more modern electric drivetrain into it. If bikes are more your interest, there's a freshly completed Brough Superior just waiting for a ride, and if American models are your thing, a Ford Bronco is getting a Coyote V8 installed into it. You have some very specific tastes if you can't watch this clip and start wishing at least one of these vehicles could be in your own garage. Other than the personal projects his mechanics are working on in the shop, Jay gets to have them all, plus plenty more.
