Mercedes previews autonomous Vision Tokyo concept

Mon, Oct 26 2015

Mercedes is bringing a new concept car – or concept something at any rate – to the Tokyo Motor Show this year. The upscale German automaker is not telling us much about its latest show car at this point. However, it has released the solitary teaser image above to keep us on our toes for a little while longer. Billed as "a vision for future generations," the Mercedes-Benz Vision Tokyo concept appears to take the form of some sort of futuristic minivan - the kind you'd expect to see in some movie set years from now. Beyond that, we don't know much, but the Silver Star automaker describes the creation as "autonomous, luxurious and progressive" all at once. Expect it, then, to build on the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept presented at the beginning of the year at the Detroit Auto Show, and adopt an equally unusual silhouette, propelling itself (and its blissful occupants) in a self-driving cocoon of high-tech luxury. Don't be surprised to find some sort of alternative propulsion under the hood as well, be it a hybrid, full electric, or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. The Tokyo show is typically populated mostly by Japanese automakers and their latest wares, and with so many of the country's own manufacturers lining up new debuts, this edition will be no exception. This year's expo, though, also appears to be attracting some foreign attention. In addition to this Mercedes concept, Mini will be showcasing its new convertible model for the first time at the show. Watch this space for more on the Benz concept as well as our full coverage of the show from our team of editors on the ground at the Tokyo Big Sight exposition center. Drive visits a Mercedes Pagoda collector in Bangkok

Tue, Aug 4 2015

The term "icon" gets thrown around a lot, but if there was ever an automobile that deserved the honorific, certainly the Mercedes SL is one of them. Now in its sixth generation, the SL has been the prototypical German roadster since the 1950s. A sports car with that long a history will inevitably attract a great many collectors, but with values of first-generation 300 SLs and 190 SLs skyrocketing, those enthusiasts without bottomless pockets are turning in growing numbers to the second generation. Known as the Pagoda due to the design of its removable hardtop, the W113-generation SL arrived in 1963 and stayed in production until 1971. By that point Mercedes had built nearly 50,000 of them, selling over 19,000 of those in the United States alone. Through three engine variants – dubbed 230, 250 and 250 SL – and numerous body-styles, all featured an inline-six, transmitting to the road through manual or automatic transmissions with four or five gears. More of a cruiser, then, that an outright sports car, but one that warrants its place in the history of the automobile. In this latest episode, Drive travels to Bangkok to profile a local enthusiast and collector. That's a rather difficult undertaking in Thailand, where it's illegal to import old cars, but Sittisan Quan Sundaravej rises to the challenge, locating classics together with like-minded local enthusiasts. The heart of his collection, though, isn't one he acquired, but rather inherited from his late father. That's the kind of provenance you can't buy.

Mercedes-Benz says no to price premium on S550 PHEV

Fri, Jun 19 2015

The good news? Mercedes-Benz won't be charging any extra for the plug-in hybrid version of the S550 sedan compared to the gas-powered version. The bad news? The gas-powered version is really expensive. The S550 Plug-in Hybrid's pricing will start at a tidy $95,325, the same as the conventional S550, according to Cars Direct. For that price, buyers get a car that delivers 436 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque while having the ability to go as far as 18 miles on electric power alone, assuming that the driver in question isn't trying to use all 436 horses. But just in case he or she is, the car can also go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about five seconds. There's been no word on a fuel-economy rating from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) but the sedan gets 84 miles per gallon on the more lenient European driving cycle. It's unlikely to anywhere close to that stateside, but some folks still might feel they got their money's worth (ha ha) by adding a plug. The S550 Plug-in Hybrid goes on sale in California later this month. The model was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2013 and shown off at the Los Angeles Auto Show late last year.
