"Engineered like no other car in the world"

Ok, no BS here, if you are looking to buy one of these cars you already know that they are really a sweet ride. I have owned this car since 1991 and put about 190,000 miles on it with very few problems. They are a really great road car and I always got complements on it, probably because of the color. Anyway, I used it when I had a larger company and needed the room, times change and so have my car needs. As typically happens to me, I can’t seem to part with things that I have a long history with, but it needs to go to someone who will give it the TLC it deserves. So here goes with the Good, the Bad, and the UGLY……

The Good,

The car has not been seriously on the road for a couple of years,  It has a new battery, starts immediately and runs just fine. The transmission was replaced by a Mercedes only shop with a Mercedes remanufactured transmission about 20K ago for around $3K. The suspension is tight, and the car handles well and tracks straight. The engine has never been apart, and still has plenty of power. The paint was redone about 10 years ago, so aside from a minor blemish or two and a good wax job is in excellent shape. From the dash to the back of the front seats are in real good condition, a couple of cracks from the years, but overall good. The seats have always been covered and so are in fine shape. The car was garaged for the majority of its life. I have the original tires if you want them, I replaced them with 18” rims of the newer Mercedes style. I think it improves both the look and the handling of the car, but to the purest I do have the original wheels. The tires have some age on them, but they still have legal tread left and would be good for a while but they are checked a bit. They should get you home safe enough, but that is about it. I replaced the radio with a kenwood, once again violating the code, but I have the original radio if you want it. I do not know of any rust on the car, all the doors etc. work just fine. The car was in a small accident, hit in the rear by a teenager on a cell phone in slow moving heavy traffic. Did a small amount of damage to the truck lid and license plate area, did not even break a tail light lens. The insurance adjustor thought as we did that the bumper was twisted, turned out it was just the reflection in the chrome, but it basically helped cover a complete paint job, all the metal was straightened and no bondo was used. The car is straight and true and not a dint in it.

The Bad:

The drivers side window mechanism has broken and the window is propped up in the fully closed position until that can be repaired. The sunroof works, but not as well as it should and you have to mess with it to get it to seal back properly. The odometer stopped working a couple of years after I stopped driving it on a daily basis. So it says 228K and I am guessing it is around 248K, The majority of the time that it was my daily driver, I drove it about 100 miles a day to and from work, so the miles piled on fairly quickly, but it was 90% freeway driving. The AC works just great, until the Freon leaks out which takes a couple of weeks, so bottom line is there is a leak somewhere in the system. Relative to leaks in the system, if you let the car sit for a week or so, air somehow manages to make its way into the fuel system, and about a 1/4 mile down the road it will start to sputter like it is running out of fuel, this last for about 100 yards, then it smooths out and all is well. If you drive it every day, you will never even notice it. Could be a simple seal, who knows, but it is most likely back near the tank since it takes a while to make it to the engine.

The Ugly:

Due to the large back window on these cars, and the time it had to sit outside my office and the last couple of years the sun has done a good bit of damage to the back window area and the rear passenger seat. The leather has shrunk and there is no repairing it. You can sit back there no problem, but it is not pretty. They do make complete replacements for these cars so I understand. Also the headliner outer fabric is starting to separate around the edges, it is not hanging down it takes some attention to notice it, but in the interest of complete disclosure I thought you should know.

Bottom line… it is a good solid ride that needs some TLC and it should be good for another 100K.

This is a NO RESERVE auction, The car is sold as is where it is, with no warranty expresses or implied.

Mercedes previews new S-Class convertible

Mon, Aug 17 2015

Mercedes keeps on expanding its flagship S-Class with more models, and will soon add one more to the roster. But before it does, it's giving us this teaser of what's to come with an advanced look at the upcoming new S-Class Cabriolet. The convertible model will be based closely on the S-Class Coupe we already know, only with a folding roof. Expect that dropping top to be constructed of several layers of fabric (as opposed to a folding metal top) with a glass rear window (instead of plastic) to keep it luxuriously isolated and insulated from the outside world when it's up, and let the wind and sunshine in when down. The Cabrio will bring the array of body-styles in the S-Class range up to six, with the convertible joining the existing coupe and four wheelbase lengths of sedan. Expect powertrain options to closely mirror those of the coupe, including S550, S63, and eventual S65 AMG models driving the rear wheels or all four. Slotting in above the E-Class Cabriolet, the new convertible S-Class will be Daimler's "first luxury four seater cabriolet since 1971." It'll compete in rather rare company against the likes of the Bentley Continental GTC, Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Maserati GranTurismo Convertible, and even the upcoming new Rolls-Royce Dawn when it arrives. And judging from the timing of this preview rendering's release, we anticipate it'll arrive soon. Related Video:

Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is Affalterbach's first big leap into the little pond

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The recent history of AMG is turning out amped-up versions of Mercedes-Benz offerings that would hardly ever be mistaken for their sedate counterparts. Sure, you'd need to pay attention to pick a G-Class from the G63 AMG, but dual side-pipes are a quick giveaway. The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is not only a new era in Affalterbach's attention on smaller cars, it is probably also the most subtle transformation we can think of in the line-up.
Low and chunky enough in standard guise to make a sporting impression, the aesthetic makeover is confined to black trim around the lower rim of the hatch, black wheels with red brake calipers and a single, rectangular exhaust tip on either side of the diffuser. It's easier to make a positive ID inside, where the flat-bottomed steering wheel, red seatbelts and red-rimmed details say, "You know what I am..."
If the car is running, though, it won't take but a second. The 2.0-liter turbo spitting 360 horsepower and 332 pound-feet will grumble through a sport exhaust at idle, and bellow through the same on it's way to a 0-60 time of less than 4.5 seconds. And if you need something that looks a little harder - and you want those quad pipes - then the A45 AMG Edition 1 is the treasure you seek. There's a press release below for all the info you'll need until the hot hatch goes on sale in Germany later this year, and photos for the rest of us while we wait to find out if we'll get a chance to buy it.

Daimler CEO says nobody is making money on EVs right now

Wed, Nov 5 2014

What do you charge for a vehicle you're going to lose money on? If you're Mercedes-Benz and the vehicle in question is the B-Class Electric Drive, you offer it for lease for just 399 euros ($498) a month with a down payment of 8,473 euros ($10,582). If Daimler was going to price it honestly, it seems, the number would have to be a lot higher. "Nobody today is making a battery-powered vehicle that's economically viable." – Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche That's according to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, who spoke to reporters in Spain recently and said that, "You can reasonably say that nobody today is making a battery-powered vehicle that's economically viable in its own right. Manufacturers will not see a return within a reasonable time on the billions they're investing now." There are ways to make money in EVs, of course. Just ask Daimler, which recently sold its stake in Tesla for a cool $780 million. Zetsche has some EV-critical company in executives like Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, who has said his company loses over $10,000 on each Fiat 500E it sells. Other automakers – e.g., Tesla, Nissan – are much more positive about their financial bet on EVs, but no one is opening all their books to the public to prove this. Tesla, which worked with Mercedes on the B-Class ED, will have an earnings call with investors later today, so perhaps we'll learn something new in a few hours. The B-Class ED lease deal is for 36 months, based on an MSRP of 39,151 euros ($48,895) in Europe, including the 19 percent VAT. You can read more in the press release below. Commercial release of Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive: Local emission-free driving from ˆ399/month Stuttgart, Nov 03, 2014 With its high-torque electric motor, the B-Class Electric Drive delivers lively and superior driving pleasure – with zero local emissions. The B-Class Electric Drive is now available to order, with deliveries set to start before the end of 2014. Prices start at ˆ39,151[1]. The B-Class Electric Drive can be leased through the Mercedes-Benz Bank from ˆ399 a month[2]. Further information on the full range of tailor-made leasing and financing offers as well as specific pricing examples are available at http://www.mercedes-benz-bank.de. Quiet and local emission-free driving is ensured by a 132 kW electric motor, which, as is typical of an electric drive, delivers its maximum torque of 340 Nm right from the start. The result is noticeably powerful acceleration from rest.
