1989 Mercedes-benz 560sl Base Convertible 2-door 5.6l on 2040-cars
North Charleston, South Carolina, United States
Whenever a franchise store is close to trading or does trade for a unique vehicle I am the guy they call here in Charleston S.C. This 560sl is not what i normally hunt for in SL's, I usually try and keep the euro cars, right hand drive, and middle 80's Eoru 500 sl's because they are hard to find and I like having different vehicles aside from my mainstream cars here at the store. They sent me a few pictures and I realized someone had really cared for this car over the years TOP to BOTTOM. The undercarriage of this car is like new, I haven't even found the signs of rust about to happen as normally found in the trunk and the rocker panels..you can eat off the undercarriage as if it was put on a lift and detailed whenever the car was washed.
I have had many SL's over the years and very few have been in this condition and I sell very nice cars and deal with some nutty about perfection car guys myself but this car overall is one of the nicest I have had. The leather is like new and shows very little signs of wear, the door panels are in excellent condition and all clips and screws are i place as they should be, The dash is the nicest I have ever seen on a USED W107 car.. It DOESN'T have a dash cover it is absolutely flawless, the wood throughout is near perfect and all of the chrome trim interior and exterior is excellent as well, all vents move in all directions yet still are stiff enough to stay where you put them, steering wheel is in excellent shape as well and the horn does work, the car does have an aftermarket cd player with a remote but I do have the original radio for the new owner, all of the glass in this car excellent as well as the hardtop windows they are in great shape also. (There are two small chips in the top right corner of the front windshield but they are so small it doesn't seem worth replacing but the isnt isn't any road rash haze on the windshield though.
The wheels are the OEM wheel but have been chromed and they look as if they were installed yesterday, not one blemish or curb rash anywhere and the tires where installed by us as the vehicle had been sitting for awhile and I did'nt feel like waiting for flat spots to possible work themselves out.. The car seems to have completely repainted some years back and it looks as though it was a high quality job. The chrome and stainless trim pieces have zero paint overspray on them anywhere and all exterior body pieces where removed as well.. The paint job as a few imperfections here and there but nothing that would really need attention unless you were wanting to do judged shows where a nib here ot there would be a deduction.. The soft top as the photos will show is like brand new and seems to have never been used or is a recently replaced top.. The rear plastic is clear as the glass throughout the car, the fit and finish of the top leads me to believe it is a OEM authorized top or one from Mercedes.
All options work on this vehicle including Air conditioning, heat, power windows, cruise, all brake lights, headlights, turn signals, hazards, dash lights, interior lights, EVEN the ODOMETER works correctly.. This car has had the wrench time put into to last for many years to come. I took some up close photos of most of the important areas under the car including the suspension front and rear as well as rear shafts, fuel pump, oil pan, exhaust front to rear and most of the front control arms and parts associated with and around it.. The brake and fuel lines are in great shape and all fittings and fasteners are rather shiny and clean.. Even the abs sensors are clean and retain service markings on them...Car hasn't been a garage queen but attention and respect to detail has kept this car looking better than most 2 year old cars on the road.. I have inspected all of the body mounts and have found that seem to be in like new condition and showing no signs of dryness or cracking, the motor mounts are brand new and were installed by us as well as the transmission mount (we keep them in stock and they are easy for us to do so we just do them when one of these come in) The rear of the driveshaft has a large mount/rubber spacer that goes bad over time and causes slap in the driveline, that is like new as well ..The steering boxes in these will develop play in them over the years and this one is very tight with very little play if any.. Tie rods and ball joints seem to feel tight and I used a long bar to pry here and there looking for play and didn't find anything worth replacing...The exhaust is in great shape and from the resonator on back is a brand new OEM style pipe and muffler with all new hangers and bushings..The catylytic converter cover on the bottom has an area where moisture has created some rust at the bottom of the bottom of it yet the converter is still in tack with no issues...it is the casing that surrounds the actual converter !
Trunk is super solid showing no signs of rust or any type of previous repair..The spare tire currently in the trunk has been used on the car at some point and is in pretty nice shape yet it is not a chrome one like the others on the vehicle currently.I have spent some time of course under car looking at the vehicle overall and had found a little seepage on both sides from seem to be the valve covers but nothing I feel will need attention right away as it is very minimal and not dripping on the ground or even much to belly of the car for that matter.. The hardtop is in great condition and fits nicely.. All of the rubber on the top is in pretty nice shape.. don't think that it has been replaced like the rubber on the rest of the car but it is still in great shape and not needing any attention at this time.. As this vehicle was a trade in to a franchise store I didn't receive records for the work done to it over the years... I did find that CARFAX has a lot of history at franchise stores for service work in general and they be able to tell me some thing ...I will post what I find over the next few days in this section of my ad.. Car seems to have had 2 owners since new and vehicle lived in California, North Carolina , and here in South Carolina.. Carfax shows a Minor Damage report in 2002 consisting of a dent or scratch to the body..Mileage lines up fine also.. I feel that I have probably overdescribed this car and felt it belonged on EBAY where most of my items like this sell.. This vehicle is not for sale locally and it will go through the auction process unless BUY it NOW of course..
This car cranks up without any issues and drives as it should, there are not any exhuast gasket leaks either which is common on these cars overtime..I have had other older 500's 380's 560's etc with much less mileage and records to go with them that did'nt present themselves as well as this car does..Buy it Now doesn't reflect condition or drivability of this car..I just feel it is a really nice well maintained car with a few miles that can enjoyed for years to come that can be bought at a great deal.. I paid up to have the car but did'nt have to do much to get it ready so I never had much sweat equity in getting it ready..So I guess i am passing that savings on to the the new owner..
I do not care what N.A.D.A. values this car at and I'm a reasonable person who understands this is more of a want type of a car and not a need.. The reserve will be very fair for buyer and seller and the BUY IT NOW will be more than fair at the same time..I sell these types of cars for fun as I enjoy getting them ready and finding a new home for them...Day to day car sales sales pays my bills, These are just kinda a hobby and I do get to enjoy them while they are here... I have shipppers that I deal with that have done an outstanding job for me over the years and if you may need shipping please just email me you zipcode and I will get you a quote...Also I recommend enclosed shipping for any long distances as this car deserves it...enclosed cost a little more but would be worth it if you were to ask me.. Thanks for taking the time to read this and please go to SOUTHERNMOTORCOSC.COM for plenty of pictures of this vehicle on my website... Please feel free to call me if you have any questions, I am a car guy and would love to help anyway I can.. Thanks Chris Salisbury

13-year-old boy swipes dad's Mercedes, drives across Europe
Wed, 16 Jan 2013After an argument with his adoptive parents that resulted in them taking away his mobile phone, an angry 13-year-old boy ran away from his home in Italy and headed straight to Poland to meet his biological sister. But instead of taking the train or hitching a ride, like most on the run, the young man (an accomplished go-kart racer and car enthusiast) grabbed the keys to his father's Mercedes-Benz and jumped behind the wheel for an impromptu road trip.
With less than 200 euros (about $270) in his wallet and a passport in his pocket, the youngster managed to put more than 500 miles between himself and his distraught parents, crossing two international borders in the process, before German police nabbed him just shy of the Polish border. According to reports, the vehicle was tracked - it wasn't his driving that alerted authorities to his location.
Reunited with his mother and father, who traveled to Germany to retrieve both their son and the vehicle, the young man apologized and acknowledged his error. As a result of his actions, social workers will increase checks on the family and we can be sure his parents are now hiding the keys.
Here's how Detroit is selling more luxury vehicles than Germany and Japan
Sun, Dec 14 2014Now there's an attention-grabbing headline, eh? Although the answer to the riddle - pickup trucks and SUVs - might be somehow deflating, the numbers involved deserve a going over. According to TrueCar's figures (click on the table to enlarge), six of the year's ten best-selling vehicles in the US that sell for a transaction price above $50,000 are body-on-frame, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the only foreigner to crack the top five. Every enthusiast knows that pickup trucks are 'Murica's most popular vehicle by a colossal margin, and there have been plenty of reports about the popularity of luxuriously appointed trucks and SUVs, but compare these figures from TrueCar: 70 percent of Chevrolet Tahoe sales have a transaction price above $50K, and The Bowtie is expected to make $3.9 billion in revenue on 66,945 predicted high-dollar sales; 95.1 percent of E-Class sales break $50K, so the German company will make $4.0 billion on 67,006 predicted sales in that pricing sphere. It's about the only time you'll see the Tahoe ranked right next to Mercedes' bread-and-butter sedan. Ram is ahead of those two with $4.2B coming from $50K-plus sales. The Ford F-Series does almost as much revenue as the next three combined, with an expected $10.8 billion coming from sales of trucks over $50K - more than a quarter of the model's total sales, when a base F-150 can be had for about $26,000. Yes, the Germans make a lot more money on fewer sales, but considering the comparison, the bottom line isn't too troubled by such facts. Weighing like-for-like, the full-size Ford walks it in every category; elsewhere, the Chevrolet Silverado outsells the Ram, but the Ram outsells the Chevy by 6.7 percent above $50K. And for all the flak GMC takes over swapping out grilles, the Sierra also outsells the Chevy in the well-appointed segment, 16.1 percent of sales versus 11 percent – the Professional Grade brand is a huge profit center for The General. You'll find more info in the TrueCar press release below.
