Volvo S60 Polestar concept plays in the snow with Mercedes C63 AMG
Thu, 24 Jan 2013Chris Harris took to a snowy stretch of tarmac to get a fingertips-on-the-wheel feel of the Volvo S60 Polestar concept. Harris says the turbocharged sedan with 508 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque - and a manual transmission - is "a study to see if Volvo can get back into the fast-car market." The Polestar S60 concept, one of which was already purchased for $300,000 by a private buyer, is still making the publicity rounds because even Volvo's Chinese owners realize that, as Harris says, "Volvo sold more cars because it made fast cars" like the old 850 T5 Wagon that stormed the British Touring Car Championship in the 1990s.
For reference, Harris compares the blue wonder to the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and its 487 hp and 442 lb-ft. The question is, were Volvo to get the price of a production version of the S60 Polestar to climb way down from its 200,000-pound sticker, could it be worthy competition to the established giants?
You can watch Harris divine the answer via a lot of drifting through the snow and a drag race in the video below.
Mercedes-Benz SL snapped getting major facelift
Tue, Mar 17 2015With the new Mercedes-AMG GT leading the charge, it'd be all too easy to forget about the SL. But Benz hasn't, as you can see from these latest spy shots. Spotted undergoing testing in Germany, this heavily disguised prototype foreshadows the arrival of a heavily revised two-seater convertible. It's hard to tell much from the other side of the body cladding and camouflage, but it appears to be hiding a new front end – complete with slimmer headlights, reprofiled front bumper and more upright grille – as well as a new hood, rear bumper, exhaust tips and tail lamps. Unlike the last time we saw the new SL out testing, we can now see inside as well. Although the steering wheel and center console remain hidden from view, we can anticipate a bigger touchscreen display and other updates. And apparently an onboard winter hat, as well. Now in its sixth generation, the Sport Leicht may not be as sporty or as light as the original, but while others have come and gone, the SL remains a mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz lineup. The current model was introduced in 2012, and this update should keep it fresh on the boulevards of Beverly Hills, the French Riviera and Abu Dhabi for several more years to come. Related Video:
Mercedes completes production of G63 AMG 6x6
Mon, Apr 6 2015Considering its 19-foot length, it sure was short-lived. A flash in the pan, really, in so far as a 4-ton beast could possibly be. But the Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 is reportedly wrapping up its short production run this month. Based on a military variant of the legendary Gelandewagen but built for civilian consumption, the G63 AMG was – and will likely forever remain – the ultimate version of Benz's ultimate off-roader. It features six driven wheels on three axles with five differentials, all powered by AMG's stalwart 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8. Mercedes rolled out the 6x6 on all its half-dozen driven wheels barely over a year ago, and despite its half-million-dollar sticker price, demand soared. But after selling about 100 of them, the German automaker is putting it to pasture, ensuring its rarity in the annals of off-roader history. In its place, Benz will now begin production of the (relatively and slightly) less bonkers G500 4x42, which employs a tamer 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 driving a more conventional four wheels, and ditches the pickup short-bed for an enclosed wagon body-style, but keeps its eccentric big brother's jacked-up ride height. Those looking for the last word in power, though, will be more interested in the twelve-cylinder G65 that will now be coming to US dealers with a $200k+ sticker price. Related Video:
