1973 Mercedes Benz 450se on 2040-cars
Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States
For this Mercedes, there is a lot of good with this car and a tiny bit of work needed.
Runs, starts every time, driven daily, had many new parts and only one small spot of rust by the front right headlight assembly. Some minor things and a paint job and this thing is classic car show ready! Has the 250K Kilometer badge and certificate. New.... 2 fuel injectors, new plugs, new wires, new distributor cap, new rotor, new ignition points, new condenser, replaced- trigger points, new coil, new O2 sensor, new cooling sensor, replaced throttle position sensor, new fuel filter, new oil filter, new antenna, and new battery. Runs pretty good but not perfect. Sunroof works good, and the car has power! The 450se has the D-Jetronic engine which was one the best engines of all time. Now for the current minor issues, needs a new odometer (all of the instrument cluster was unhooked when purchased as the owner was restoring), ac doesn't work, needs a new blower motor for heater and needs a new muffler, headlight cover, and though the tires have plenty of tread they should be replaced but have been driven as they are with no problem. (cracks from setting) Also the rear seat back top is cracked from sun. The front seats are ok but not perfect, also needs a new hood release and cable. It can be opened with pliers pulling the cable so the engine can be viewed and such. The hood real ease and exhaust are probably the most pressing issues. In excellent condition this car can sell for as much as $11,000 or more. Hagertys Collector car insurance will insure the car for between $6,000 and $10,000. Now for more good, It's a sweet classic Mercedes. I bought it for my son as a project and it was barely running when we got it, we did some work and a local Mercedes mechanic did some work. Son is heading off to college and can't have a car and I would rather see it finished rather than left setting again. It set for a while before we got it. He has also switched his desires. It's a great car to finish and take to shows. Will trade for a BMW R1100rt or R1200rt. |

Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing doesn't sell, then does sell for $1.85 million [UPDATE: w/video]
Sat, 19 Jan 2013How much extra value does previous celebrity ownership add to of a car? Really, there's no way to know until the car in question hits the auction block and bidders start raising their hands. In the case of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing you see above, the celebrity owner is none other than Clark Gable, who purchased it new. After Gable's death in 1960, the car changed hands a few times before settling with Charles Wood in 1975.
A high-dollar restoration was performed in 1989, and period accessories added by Gable himself were kept in place, including the Rudge knock-off wheels and Nardi steering wheel. Any Mercedes-Benz 300SL is worth a big chunk of money. In the case of Clark Gable's old Gullwing, the bidding stalled at $1.9 million here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. As one of the 5000-series cars, this 300SL carried a reserve, and a bit of after-the-fact dealmaking saw the car change hands for $1.85 million.

Here's what Jay Leno will be working on in 2016
Tue, Dec 29 2015Jay Leno always has a project or five underway in his garage, and since 2015 is practically over, his latest video offers a glimpse at some of the amazing vehicles we might see his team complete in the coming year. Leno's crew certainly has a lot to do next year. Leno's most impressive current undertaking is an effort to modernize a 1914 Detroit Electric with about ten times its original power output. He showed off the vintage EV as just a shell in his last tour of the garage, but his team has now recreated the wood body. They also started the project's bigger challenge of installing a new electric motor and lithium-ion batteries from a Nissan Leaf. If EVs don't interest you, Leno has plenty of other irons in the fire, too. There's a 1971 Porsche 911 that's under restoration to turn it into a solid driver and several motorcycles in various states of repair. Leno even welcomes viewers into his dyno room to check out the work on the Chrysler V8 for his Cunningham. The results of this wrenching and welding on these projects should make for even more compelling videos in 2016.
Maybach Pullman, S550 4Matic coming next
Mon, Nov 24 2014Mercedes-Benz officially revived the Maybach name as a sub-brand with the reveal of the luxed-up S600 at the LA Auto Show last week, but that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the German automaker's new plans for its uber-prestige marque. Motor Trend reports that Mercedes is planning two additional Maybach variants to launch in the near future, both of them also based on the S-Class. First up, we're told to expect the even longer Pullman limousine to launch, complete with Maybach treatment, at the Geneva Motor Show next March – although this model won't necessarily be offered in America. Whether it will or not, the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman will be even bigger, more luxurious and more expensive than the one just unveiled. What is being planned for US customers, however, is an Maybach S550 4Matic. Mating the 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 to all-wheel drive would be a boon for wintery upscale markets, and is reportedly a more feasible option than trying to pair the V12 to the 4Matic system. As for other model lines, we've heard rumors of a Maybach GL-Class utility in the pipeline, but have yet to receive any such confirmation. Car confirms, however, that we shouldn't expect to see AMG versions of Maybach models. The two are being cultivated as separate pillars atop the Mercedes range – one focused on performance, the other on luxury – and never the twain shall meet. The previous model line did breed a sportier Maybach 57 S, however, and we wouldn't be surprised to see a similar treatment applied to one of the new models should Daimler find there's demand. In related news, MT also reports that a new S-Class Cabriolet is coming around the corner, and that the G550 is preparing to drop its aging 5.5-liter V8 in favor of the GL's 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6.
