THERE OVER 80 HUGE IMAGES OF THIS STUNNING CAR SHOWN BELOW!

DESCRIPTION:

This listing is for a gleaming 1971 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL roadster. This was the last year that this body style was produced and as such it is usually considered the most desirable. These 113 bodied cars were affectionately referred to as "Pagodas" because of the dipped roof design of the hardtops that most of these cars were delivered with. The exterior is painted in a beautiful bright DB-917 Aqua Blue color and the interior is fitted in dark blue leather seats with complimentary vinyl and carpeting. The car is equipped with most of the amenities that were available on these models in that year, including the optional hard top with rear window defroster.

The car starts right up, drives like a new car and it exhibits no gremlins or operational problems of any kind. The rebuilt engine has about 10,000 miles on it, and the transmission was done as well. The brakes have all been done. It drives and performs amazingly well with no smoke, rattles, wind noise or other distractions. This Mercedes-Benz was delivered new from the factory with both hard and soft tops. The headliner of the hardtop is in good shape, and with the exception of a small left and right pinch penetration near the rear edge of the soft top, the canvas inside and out is very good. The right front fender has had some minor body work done, but the hood is original assuring that the damage wasn't extensive. At some point early in the cars life the color was changed for reasons one can only speculate about. The result is professional and the car presents a good looking high quality finish.

The exterior and interior of this car is very straight and super clean. The low mileage is legitimate and the current owner has been in possession of the car since 1979! During his ownership, the car was never driven in the rain or any other inclement weather. This is a currently registered and driven vehicle that recently passed the rigid safety inspection in the state of New York. There is an abundance of additional general information about these Mercedes Benzes on the internet if you are looking for more technical data or performance details. We didn't want to bog you down with useless information, considering that most of the people looking at this car will know much more about it than we do.

The few nits that we were able to pick is a very short list indeed. There are a few VERY minor blemishes in the finish (no dents or rust) and there is no body filler of any kind that was detected.  Everything mechanical and electronic works as designed including the clock, glove compartment light and the original Mercedes- Benz radio. The matching Michelin white wall tires are good and have lots of tread remaining, but they are older and should probably be replaced prior to any long trip, in our opinion. The interior is all new and looks great, only the door panels are original. The dash top has a few cracks present in the vinyl. The trunk is tidy and very factory looking and so is the engine compartment. We have the original books, owner's manual and data plate which is extremely scarce and nice to have as part of the package.

As with all of our eBay Motors listings we try to let our high resolution photographs tell the story about the vehicles that we are selling. All the pictures were just taken and we have shots from many angles including the exterior (both tops on and top down), engine bay, interior, trunk and undercarriage. If you study our clear multiple images very carefully, you will see exactly what this gorgeous Mercedes-Benz 280SL roadster is all about. It comes with a full set of protective floor mats, including the rear trunk area, original keys and the owner's manual. There is a factory full size spare tire, jack and tools.

The clear multiple images of this fantastic 1971 Mercedes-Benz roadster, shown below, will do a much better job of describing the look, style, condition and market value of this vehicle than our words ever could. We invite questions and comments!

Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing doesn't sell, then does sell for $1.85 million [UPDATE: w/video]

Sat, 19 Jan 2013

How much extra value does previous celebrity ownership add to of a car? Really, there's no way to know until the car in question hits the auction block and bidders start raising their hands. In the case of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing you see above, the celebrity owner is none other than Clark Gable, who purchased it new. After Gable's death in 1960, the car changed hands a few times before settling with Charles Wood in 1975.
A high-dollar restoration was performed in 1989, and period accessories added by Gable himself were kept in place, including the Rudge knock-off wheels and Nardi steering wheel. Any Mercedes-Benz 300SL is worth a big chunk of money. In the case of Clark Gable's old Gullwing, the bidding stalled at $1.9 million here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. As one of the 5000-series cars, this 300SL carried a reserve, and a bit of after-the-fact dealmaking saw the car change hands for $1.85 million.
You can see our high-res image gallery above, and the car's official auction description below.

Frankfurt Motor Show Notes: Why Jaguar decided to build an SUV

Wed, Sep 16 2015

It was inevitable. Jaguar had to make an SUV, and that notion became reality this week with the debut of the F-Pace, an all-wheel-drive five-seater that will launch in the United States next spring. Some purists may cringe. But in an era when Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, and other traditional luxury brands are all building or (planning to build) SUVs, Jaguar had to evolve. While it seems like a leap for Jaguar to make an SUV, longtime design director Ian Callum said it's been in the works for years. "The first time I was asked the question was when I arrived 16 years ago," he said. So in 1999 (and probably well before that), Jaguar was already thinking SUV. What took so long? "It wasn't a priority," Callum said. Jaguar was concentrating on fixing its existing lineup, which was pockmarked with holes and poorly selling products, like the X-Type. Along the way, Jaguar and sister brand Land Rover were sold by Ford to Indian conglomerate Tata Motors. Flash forward several years, and Jaguar and Land Rover are both experiencing a resurgence in the United States and around the world. Jaguar's lineup is flush with the E-Type's modern successor, the F-Type, plus a new version of the XF. The XJ received a 2016 freshening, and the smaller XE sedan is on the way. Jaguar put its house in order as other factors conspired to make a crossover timely. Fuel prices stayed relatively low, and consumers in the US and China remained steadfast in their love for utility vehicles of all stripes. Making a Jaguar SUV became a priority. "The world was telling us in no uncertain terms this is what they wanted," Callum said. "Not to be in the sector would be a little naive for the sake of purity." Jaguar proved its intent two years ago when it revealed the C-X17 crossover concept at Frankfurt, and the final production model is close to the prototype's striking looks. "I thought we managed to maintain that spirit," Callum said. It's a true Jaguar, with cues from the F-Type, 1968 XJ, and other famous models. Who would have thought Jaguar would make an SUV? "I certainly didn't," Callum admitted. But the F-Pace is here. If Callum is okay with it, purists can be, too. Quick Hits Opel retrenches for 2016 and beyond Opel used the Frankfurt show to display its new generation of the Astra, a critical vehicle line for the German division of General Motors.
