I've had this car for the past two years having originally bought it as a hurried replacement for also a former diesel that hit a spot of black ice in the mountains on the way to work one morning. It turned out to be a good buy -- always getting me from A to B without complaint -- but my life situation has changed and it's time to move on. I'm no longer in the mountains, it's now coastal L.A., my elderly parents want to give me one of their low mileage cars and between having gone back to school as well as balancing that with work, I'm simply no longer motivated to spend any more occasional Saturdays underneath the hood figuring out why some light bulb won't stay on, the sunroof won't open, getting the power door locks to work, etc.

The Good:

Still runs great. Engine runs cool and has no less oomph than when I bought it. No visible smoke. Tranny still shifts fine though it can be sluggish upon starting off till it warms up first thing in the morning. No alignment issues -- tracks straight with no abnormal tire wear -- though the steering wheel looks a little out of kilter when driving straight. New tires all around last fall (though the spare has since been stolen -- I work in a sometimes sketchy area south of downtown LA). Brakes, lights, signals, horn, heater, etc. all work fine. A trailer hitch comes with it though I took it off shortly after buying it. No dents or body damage other than what I have to mention. Original paint still has a gloss though the clear coat on the hood has some oxidation in spots. It has a great programmable Pioneer radio/ cd player with removable face. California SMOG exempt. Tags are current through August 2013.  Car does not leak oil anywhere!

The Bad:

I was told the original owner -- a real estate lady who lived in coastal Santa Cruz -- lived in something of a fog belt so it has the beginnings of rust around one set of rear windows and a few spots underneath the left passenger seat floor pan. The second owner -- the guy I bought it from -- didn't help things via his ownership of two German Shepherd dogs. As a result, the headliner has a few tiny tears, the leather seating has more cracks and wear than it should and lots of miscellaneous little plastic trim pieces of one sort or another are broken or missing. Sunroof no longer opens though the motor still works. Rear door windows no longer open. A light on the dash tells you a light bulb is out somewhere though they all seem to work fine to me. Another light tells you that the windshield wiper fluid is low -- no matter how much you keep it topped up.  The power door locks will still lock the doors but they won't unlock with the key from the outside! Sometimes the red alternator/ battery light flickers on though the alternator and battery are still on speaking terms with each other. The two rear seat bottoms are missing, the panel that formerly covered over the also missing spare tire is gone (still have the wrench and jack), a dash panel under the steering wheel is gone, and the rear hatch is slightly out of alignment on one side plus the air cylinders no longer hold it up (I've had to use a broom handle). Also, I suspect the rear hatch got hit in some way once as the chrome trim pieces that would say 300TD aren't there but it looks professionally done and the paint is a perfect match.  The aluminum oil pan had a dime-sized crack patched by the former owner -- looks hokey -- but it's never leaked.  Finally, a choke cable (that connects to a kill lever under the hood) is used to turn the car off as apparently the old pneumatic system that used to do this is kaput.

I think that about covers it. If you know these cars then you'll also know that the drive train will far outlast the rest of the car. Potential bidders are welcome to come by for an inspection -- email me through here for my contact information. Car currently resides in Palos Verdes -- 90274.

Sunday Drive: And now for something completely different

Sun, Dec 17 2017

This past week played host to a wide assortment of automotive news, highlighted by our first drive of the 2018 Volvo XC40. The Swedish crossover is targeted at young, successful Millennials, but it offers cool styling, fun dynamics, and all of today's must-have technology, so we think it ought to appeal to a much wider swath of the automotive marketplace. From there we answer the question, "What are hard on the outside and soft on the inside?" as we take a look at the next Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV. We expect the German automaker's flagship luxury SUV to remain boxy on the outside, but the interior is going to be soft, supple, and luxurious. And then there's the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, which starts at starts at $34,290 and boasts 212 total system horsepower, 232 pound-feet of torque, 47 miles of electric driving range, and a total range of 340 miles. EPA rates it at 110 MPGe in EV mode, and 44 city/40 highway/42 combined overall. We compare it to other plug-ins like the Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius Prime. And finally we have some more spy photos of the 2019 Ram 1500. It doesn't have a traditional crosshair grille, but it's got plenty of chrome and an attractive upright stance that's sure to tempt future truck buyers looking for some sophistication to go with their work gloves. As always, stay tuned to Autoblog this week to see all the automotive news that's fit to print. 2018 Volvo XC40 First Drive Review | The Masspirational crossover Mercedes-Benz G-Class gets the luxe, high-tech treatment 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid Review | It's what's on the inside that counts 2019 Ram 1500 shows chrome grille and more production parts Green Honda Mercedes-Benz RAM Volvo Technology Truck Crossover SUV Luxury Performance Sedan volvo xc40 sunday drive

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton buys LaFerrari

Tue, Mar 24 2015

Lewis Hamilton has driven some of the fastest cars ever devised, like the McLaren MP4-23 with which he won the 2008 Formula One World Championship, the Mercedes W05 with which he won the title last year, and the new W06 he drove to the checkered flag in the season opener earlier this month. But what does he drive in his spare time? According to the latest reports quoting his boss Toto Wolff, the reigning champ celebrated his win at the Australian Grand Prix by ordering a new LaFerrari. The seven-figure, 950-horsepower hybrid hypercar may be made by a rival manufacturer to the team for which he drives, but then his employers at Mercedes don't (for the time being at least) build anything that competes in the segment – unlike his former employers at McLaren that offer the similarly potent P1. Something tells us he won't be invited to drive it at Fiorano, though - which is something his rivals Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel have all had the chance to do. Hamilton has a long-established penchant for driving twelve-cylinder exotic supercars in his spare time. At his previous place of work, he was promised an exceedingly rare McLaren F1 LM – valued at some $4 million – but only if he won three world titles for the Woking-based team. He also owns a Pagani Zonda that was made specifically for him with a 760-horsepower engine (supplied, naturally, by Mercedes) and a six-speed manual – complete with a clutch pedal, which (apart from starting off the line) is something he doesn't usually get to operate during working hours. Race Recap: 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix is Magyar for 'What a race!'

Mon, Jul 27 2015

Every driver on the Formula 1 grid dreams of taking home the silverware, but only one driver each year can do it. Barring disaster in 2015 it looks like it's going to be Lewis Hamilton. The Brit has been so dominating at the front of the grid on Saturday, we can't see how he'll miss out on winning the second annual FIA Pole Position Trophy. That's the accolade introduced last season in another manufactured attempt to give drivers something to work for on Saturday, since the FIA felt leading into the first corner didn't have the pull it used to. Hamilton took his ninth pole of the season in Hungary for Mercedes-AMG Petronas with a crushing lap that put him almost six tenths ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg in second. All Hamilton needs is one more spot at the top of the grid this season, and he's the Pole Position trophy winner. Thrilling stuff. Behind Rosberg the gaps stayed smaller, Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari a little more than a tenth behind Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing less than four one-hundredths behind Vettel. We feel almost as vexed watching Kimi Raikkonen as he feels driving – he's finally got a good Ferrari, now he can't get a good weekend. The front wing broke on his car in Free Practice 1, then a water leak in Free Practice 3 robbed him of setup time on the soft tire. He lines up in fifth about two tenths behind Ricciardo. The slow, tight Hungaroring didn't agree with the Williams chassis, Valtteri Bottas the first of the Grove team drivers in sixth, his teammate Felipe Massa two places back. Between them is Daniil Kvyat in the second Red Bull in seventh. Teenager Max Verstappen put in a good showing in the Toro Rosso to grab ninth, while Romain Grosjean in a wriggling, squishy, sliding Lotus classified his appearance in Q3 at all as "a miracle." As for the race that followed, we don't expect to see another like it for a long time – it was the real thrilling stuff, one shock after another. The drama began after the first parade lap, when Felipe Massa lined up out of position and the start was aborted. The drivers did another parade lap, then lined up with everyone in place. Mercedes got swamped as soon as the lights went out. Vettel ran around both of them and led the race into the first turn, Raikkonen had come from fifth to third by Turn 1, then got the inside line on Rosberg through Turn 2 to take second place.
